There were three men: Juan de Idiaquez, Father Robert Parsons and one of King Philip's sons, the future Philip III. King Philip was taking the Sacrament while his son played in a corner with a ship. Juan de Idiaquez verified that Mary Stuart was in fact dead while Father Robert prayed out loud for her soul.

The Queen found Leicester's last letter to her so she folded it and wrote on it "His Last Letter". History records that following her death the letter was found in her desk. After she locked the letter away Robert of Essex entered the room and the Queen asked if he knew.

The Queen: "Did you know that The Earl of Leicester is dead?"
Essex: "Aye, so I've told by my mother, his wife."

She threw an object at him, catching him off guard and he slipped and fell at the door before gathering himself up and leaving. The Queen then locked and collapsed at the door in tears. History also records that in fear for her life after two or three days her staff broke the door down.
