Essex had returned home early much to the dismay of the Queen. Sir Robert Cecil informed her of his arrival and the news while he was in battle. He burst into the chamber and Sir Robert suggested that he leave but the Queen told him since it was state business, he would keep an account. Essex said to him, "Oh yes Master Secretary, keep a good account. Write how they defame me." After the Queen didn't approve of this, Essex then left court but not before telling Sir Robert, "Go fight your paper wars."

Answer: Elizabeth Vernon

Elizabeth Vernon was a lady-in-waiting to the Queen who had the Earl of Southampton's eye. Sir Walter Raleigh had reminded Southampton that she was the cousin of the Earl of Essex. When she announced she was pregnant the Earl said they must marry at once.

Then under his breath he said, "God send me an actor for a priest." Despite their efforts at secrecy, the Queen learned of the pregnancy and marriage and yelled at her to leave her presence at once.
