Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played Queen Elizabeth?

Answer: Glenda Jackson

Glenda Jackson is in my opinion the best person to play Elizabeth. Judi Dench did play Elizabeth in "Shakespeare In Love". Keira Knightly played a Queen but albeit in disguise as Queen Amidala of Naboo in "Star Episode I: The Phantom Menace".
2. Who is the mother of Elizabeth?

Answer: Anne Boleyn

Catherine Parr, Henry's sixth wife, never had children with him. She later married Thomas Seymour and gave birth to a daughter named Mary. Catherine later died after the birth. Catherine of Aragon had one child that survived adulthood - the future Mary I. Jane Seymour died twelve 12 days after giving birth to the future Edward VI.
3. Anne Boleyn got pregnant AFTER her wedding to Henry VIII.

Answer: False

At the time of her coronation, which took place mere days after the wedding to Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn was already pregnant with the future Queen Elizabeth I.
4. Who are the parents of King James VI of Scotland?

Answer: Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley

Mary Queen of Scots had been first married to the sickly King Francois of France. He died having never produced children with Mary. Mary secondly married Henry Stuart Lord Darnley who had claims to both Scotland and England. Their marriage yielded only the future James VI. Following Darnley's murder, Mary married for a third time to James Hepburn Earl of Bothwell.
5. Which royal suitor did NOT vie for Elizabeth's hand in marriage?

Answer: Charles Prince of Wales

King Philip and Archduke Charles, both Catholic, had hoped to marry Elizabeth. Alencon, a French prince, had professed his love for Elizabeth but she was heartbroken over what Robert Dudley did. Robert Dudley had married her cousin Lettice Knollys.
6. What episode did Robert Dudley The Earl of Leicester die in?

Answer: The Enterprise of England

Queen Mary I had died in the first episode "The Lion's Cub". Robert Dudley's first wife, Amy Robsart, had died in the middle of "The Marriage Game". Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, having conspired against Elizabeth I, was executed in "Horrible Conspiracies".
7. Queen Elizabeth and Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester were married.

Answer: False

Having her mother Anne Boleyn and step-mother Catherine Howard executed, and her first step-mother Jane Seymour die after childbirth, she decided never to marry. As she told Robert Dudley when they were children, "When I was eight when Queen Catherine Howard ran screaming down the halls." This childhood memory was mentioned by Elizabeth and Robert in "The Marriage Game" episode. Why else was she dubbed "The Virgin Queen"?
8. Who was Elizabeth speaking of in "Shadow in the Sun" when she said the following? "Made this country one!"

Answer: Henry VII

"To continue the line of my father and grandfather. Henry VII who made this country one! Henry VIII who gave us our religion!" She was speaking of her Council's doubts of her pending engagement to Francis, Duke of Alencon. Mostly because of the doubt that Elizabeth might not have any children.
9. What did Elizabeth promise NEVER to do in "The Lion's Cub"?

Answer: Marry

She loved reading books. She loved jewelry, such as several strands of pearls that were once Mary Stuart's. The necklace can be seen in several portraits, especially The Armada Portrait. BUT Elizabeth never had children due to never marrying. She would never compromise herself by having an illegitimate child.
10. Elizabeth died childless.

Answer: True

Negotiations between England and France for the marriage of Elizabeth to Francis, The Duke of Alencon, were broken. When Elizabeth had learned of Robert Dudley's marriage to, Lettice Knollys, she broke down in sobs then ordered Dudley put into the Tower.

In most books, Elizabeth knew that this chance at marriage was her last chance at having children because she was already in her late thirties.
