Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chauffeur; Small-time criminal; Lady's man

Answer: Sid Carter

Sid (real name Sydney) is Lady Felicia's chauffeur. It is not a secret that he uses marijuana and has cracksman skills, which Father Brown frequently makes use of. Sid is generally uncouth but has moments when he acts like a gentleman. He frequently disagrees with Mrs. McCarthy, though they do seem to respect each other. Sid also has a frequent of dating women who are usually connected somehow to that episode's murder. Sid is usually assigned the dirtiest jobs by Father Brown both around the church and while solving crimes. Sid is not very religious but is very protective of Father Brown and Lady Felicia.

Sid is portrayed by Alex Price and was a regular character in the first four seasons before making guest appearances after that. Price left the show to star as Draco Malfoy in "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" on the West End.
2. Second Inspector; Extremely arrogant; Accused of murder

Answer: Inspector Sullivan

Inspector Sullivan is the second police inspector of Kembleford in the series. He is significantly more arrogant than his predecessor, Valentine. Whereas Valentine respects and listens to Father Brown from time to time, Sullivan rarely does either and often ignores Father Brown until such a tactic is no longer feasible. In his final appearance, Inspector Sullivan is accused of a murder and flees to Father Brown who helps him clear his name. Even after Father Brown successfully does so, Sullivan still shows no deference to Father Brown and continues to demand the priest stay out of any murders that should pop up. He also threatens to arrest Father Brown whenever he gets in the way of an investigation and actually did so once.

Inspector Sullivan is portrayed by Tom Chambers.
3. First Inspector; Arrests the wrong person; Appreciates Father Brown

Answer: Inspector Valentine

Inspector Valentine is the first inspector of the series. Like his successors, he is always frustrated with Father Brown. However unlike his successors, Valentine usually considered what Father Brown said and would follow up on whatever clues the priest found. Inspector Valentine never arrests the correct person the first time. Inspectors Sullivan and Mallory also frequently arrest the wrong person but do, on occasion, get it right the first time. At the beginning of season two, Valentine is promoted to Chief Inspector and moves to London. Before he departs, he tells Father Brown how much he appreciates his help and might even miss him. This show of appreciation is something Sullivan and Mallory rarely do and only do so grudgingly.

Inspector Valentine is portrayed by Hugo Speer.
4. Brilliant; Disliked by superiors; Frequently called meddlesome

Answer: Father Brown

Father Brown is the series' main character. He is a modest, but unorthodox, Catholic Priest in Kembleford. He is often seen wearing a black hat, riding his bicycle and carrying his black umbrella. He has a curious nature and cannot help himself to investigate a murder or crime and is usually brought into said crime by a friend or parishioner. He draws the ire of all of Kembleford's inspectors who would rather Father Brown leave the police work to the police. To an almost comic effect, the inspectors are often baffled how Father Brown always seems to arrive at the crime scene before they do. Father Brown's antics are also frowned upon by his superiors like the bishop. Father Brown usually wiggles his way out of trouble by saving someone else from trouble. He frequently bargains with murderers to come clean and save their souls and innocent lives.

Father Brown is portrayed by Mark Williams.
5. The "other" woman; Drives a Jaguar; Lady Felicia's niece

Answer: Bunty Windermere

Bunty Windermere is Lady Felicia's young and wild niece. She first appears in season five where she was caught with a married man and was running to escape the embarrassment. She is wild and impetuous and lives a lavish lifestyle like her aunt. Bunty, whose real first name is Penelope, drives sports cars and wears the finest clothes, which stands out in the typically quiet Kembleford. Her personality is similar to a combination of Lady Felicia's and Sid's which is appropriate since she replaced both of them in Father Brown's group of associates.

Bunty is portrayed by Emer Kenny.
6. Housekeeper; Polish refugee; Skittish

Answer: Susie

Susie or Zuzanna is a regular character in the first season only. She is a Polish refugee who works as Father Brown's housekeeper, a role Mrs. McCarthy would take over. Susie is rather shy and skittish, especially if she is close to the murder victim or a suspect. She is constantly afraid of being attacked, killed or sent back to Poland. Her behavior is often suspicious such as going off places at strange times of night. She does not get along with Mrs. McCarthy who often criticizes her work but Father Brown adores her.

Susie is portrayed by Kasia Koleczek.
7. Parish secretary; Bakes the best strawberry scones; Local gossip

Answer: Mrs. McCarthy

Mrs. McCarthy is the Irish parish secretary who often does a number of things around the presbytery for Father Brown. She is the stereotypical church gossip and always knows everybody's business despite claiming elsewise. She is a frequent rival of Lady Felicia's and the two women often try to outdo each other. Mrs. McCarthy also frequently criticizes Sid, Susie and other young people for their more modern lifestyle. Mrs. McCarthy is famous for her award-winning strawberry scones which she often brings to people she visits. Mrs. McCarthy is also very competitive, especially in baking and gardening competitions.

Bridgette McCarthy is portrayed by Sorcha Cusack who is the sister-in-law of Jeremy Irons.
8. Father Brown's rival; Thief; Always on the run

Answer: Hercule Flambeau

Other than Father Brown, Hercule Flambeau is the only character G.K. Chesterton created that regularly appears on the series. Flambeau is a French jewel and art thief whose brilliant mind poses a tricky puzzle for Father Brown. Flambeau appears about once a year and usually tries to steal some sort of important religious artifact or object. He is a master of disguise and usually tricks Father Brown into inadvertently helping him. Father Brown tries repeatedly to get Flambeau to turn a new leaf but Flambeau resists this. Father Brown, on more than one occasion, has willingly helped Flambeau escape the police.

Flambeau is portrayed by John Light.
9. Third Inspector; Calls Father Brown "Padre"; Extremely rude

Answer: Inspector Mallory

Inspector Mallory is the third inspector of the series. Unlike his predecessors, Mallory is openly rude to Father Brown (and most everyone else) whereas the others were just frustrated with the priest. He condescendingly calls Father Brown "Padre" and frequently complains about Father Brown not being able to reveal things he learned in confession. Also unlike Valentine and Sullivan, Mallory is a bit of a slacker at work and is sometimes seen practicing his golf swing. He has a good relationship with Sergeant Goodfellow (played by John Burton).

Inspector Mallory is portrayed by Jack Deam.
10. In a loveless marriage; Fights with Mrs. McCarthy; Screams loudly

Answer: Lady Felicia

Lady Felicia Montague is married to Monty, who is a titled member of nobility. Her marriage is a loveless one so she occupies her time by helping out at Father Brown's church and running fundraisers and other charity events. Frequently, a murder suspect will be a past lover or friend of hers. She has rivalry with Mrs. McCarthy whom she fights with often but the two have been shown to be friendly towards each other when push comes to shove. She is also protective of her chauffeur Sid and often pulls strings to have charges dropped against him. A running gag on the show is that whenever Lady Felicia finds a dead body she screams in an overdramatic fashion.

Lady Felicia is portrayed by Nancy Carroll.
