Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is William G Stewart's middle name?

Answer: Gladstone

If you put Gilbert you might be confusing him with W. G. Grace. Or you may be guessing...
2. What has usually been the first thing said by William G at the start of the show?

Answer: Thank you

Usually in response to the canned applause!
3. In the first 15 years of the quiz, William G Stewart has never once dropped the question cards while recording the show.

Answer: False

At the time of writing he has only done it once to my knowledge and the footage has been caught for posterity!
4. William G has been a tireless campaigner for the return of which British Museum exhibit to its country of origin?

Answer: Elgin Marbles

These were the statues taken by Lord Elgin from outside the Parthenon and have been a controversial exhibit since the 1850's. William G Stewart presented a special one hour programme on the subject and every series of "Fifteen to One" has at least one question on the subject.
5. Who won an early celebrity edition of "Fifteen to One"?

Answer: Lesley Joseph

As in the "Birds of a Feather" actress. She seemed an unlikely winner but it was a Christmas show.
6. Anthony Martin knocked out whom to win a "Fifteen to One Grand Final"?

Answer: His father

He knocked out his father Leslie. Well, if it had to be...
7. Which contestant has not appeared behind most camera shots of William G Stewart?

Answer: 6

So 7, 8 and 9 have been the best numbers to pull out of the hat if you want to appear on TV more than the others.
8. In the first 15 years the lowest winning score achieved in a game of "Fifteen to One" has been...?

Answer: 10

This was in the days before lives were carried on from previous rounds. The lowest theoretical winning score is now 1 point but has not happened at the time of writing.
9. In most of the show's first 15 years, what has been the maximum possible score in a game of "Fifteen to One"?

Answer: 433

It was 430 before lives were carried over from previous rounds.
10. Who was the first contestant to score that maximum in a game of "Fifteen to One"?

Answer: Bill McKaig

Bill McKaig, a minister from the Gorbals in Glasgow did so in 1999 after the show had ran for 11 years. Daphne Fowler narrowly missed the top score with 432. Gerard is yours truly who appeared three times and each time was knocked out in round two with about five contestants remaining. One show I was on could not be shown for legal reasons so I was invited back.
11. When Laura Calland hasn't read out the details they have usually been read by Philip Lowrie who appeared in which soap opera?

Answer: Coronation Street

Philip played Elsie Tanner's wayward son, Dennis. At the time of writing, Philip also asks the questions at most of the auditions.
12. Grand Final winners of the show have usually won what?

Answer: Ancient pottery

Antique glass is awarded to the person at the top of the Finals Board. The ancient pottery is almost always over 2000 years old and selected by William G Stewart. One year the prize was displayed and awarded upside down!
13. In the first 15 years of "15 To 1", what has been the fewest ever contestants remaining for round two after the end of round one?

Answer: 4

Yes, eleven down and four to go! After a short second round all three had their lives intact. It amazes me how they have always edited such unpredictability into a show of exactly 28 minutes and 10 seconds.
14. In the 1997 "Fifteen to One Champion of Champions" two of the final three were from which Lancashire town?

Answer: Ormskirk

Mal Collier and Andrew Francis of Ormskirk were first and third. Quite astonishing given the thousands of contestants involved. Afterwards yet another Grand Finallist, Dag Griffiths, also came from Ormskirk. They must have a hell of a quiz league up there!
15. In 1998 which "Fifteen to One" winner was sued for his winnings by Regent Productions for breaking the rules of the show?

Answer: Trevor Montague

Trevor Montague lost the quiz in the 1980's and by the rules could not come on the show again unless invited. He disguised himself with earrings and slicked hair and re-entered "Fifteen to One" as Steve Romana. He lost again. After a relaxation of the rules he entered a third time under his own name in 1992 and won the Grand Final. Unfortunately for him, a keen-eyed satellite viewer saw through his disguise and he was taken to court and stripped of his prizes. Trevor has done much to popularise the quiz and is the author of the comprehensive "A to Z of Almost Everything".
