Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What's the name of the planet that the crew of Serenity lands on to complete their cattle transaction?

Answer: Jiangyin

Reading a painted plate in the gift shop, Simon reads, "Jiangyin Prairie Paradise." He then makes fun of the plate, making Kaylee feel a little bad, because she really liked it.

Beaumonde is the planet Serenity was headed to before Saffron hijacked the ship. Sihnon is where Inara was born, and Triumph is the place they picked up Saffron in the first place.
2. After they've been kidnapped by hillfolk, never to be seen again, River picks Simon some berries. What kind are they?

Answer: Hodgeberries

Simon: "Remember when we found those giant Hodgeberry bushes on the Camberson's estate? We thought they'd grown wild..." Then River tells him they're poisoned, causing him to spit them out.

River: "He believed her! Made a face."
Simon: "You are such a brat!"
3. Inara says that it seems like every store on every border planet "has the same five rag dolls and the same carving of-what is this? A ____?"

Answer: duck

Inara: "What is this? A duck?"
Kaylee: "It's a swan. I like it."
Inara: "You do?"
Kaylee: "It looks like it was made with...you know, longing. Made by someone who really longed to see a swan."
Inara: "Perhaps because they'd only heard of them by rough description."
4. What does it say on Shepherd Book's Ident Card that gets him such fast treatment on the Alliance ship?

Answer: We can't see the card, and nobody explains.

This is one of the mysteries that the series, unfortunately, never got to resolve. Who is Shepherd Book, and what is his past? Many times during the series, Book shows himself to be far more knowledgeable about the world of crime than a Shepherd ought to be, and this scene in "Safe" is one of the most mysterious.

Unfortunately, the camera angle is such that we can't see what's on his Ident Card, and nobody spills the beans.
5. At the beginning of the episode, River gives a speech about how quickly the human body can be drained of blood, given adequate vacuuming systems. After she's finished, how does Mal describe her?

Answer: morbid and creepifying

River: "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems."
Mal: "See, morbid and creepifying I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like."

Corpsified and gross is how Wash describes Zoe in his fake eulogy for her in the episode "Shindig." Naked and articulate is how Mal describes Saffron in "Our Mrs. Reynolds"-it's his excuse for falling for her feminine wiles. Rich and fancible is how Jayne describes Simon in "The Train Job."
6. Why do the hillfolk want to burn River at the stake?

Answer: They think she's a witch

There's a little girl named Ruby in the town who doesn't speak due to traumatic events in her past. River is psychic-Simon calls her very intuitive-and it frightens the town's teacher when River knows what happened to Ruby without being told. The teacher says, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live!"
7. Mal, working for Badger, is on the planet to make a cattle deal. How much per head did the "disreputable men" (as Zoe calls them) and Badger originally agree on?

Answer: 30

Man: "Twenty a head."
Mal: "That's an amusing figure, in light of you already agreed on thirty with Badger."

They eventually settle on 25 because, as Mal says, they look like "clean and virtuous boys."
8. What is the last name of the "disreputable men" Mal makes the cattle deal with?

Answer: Grange

Lawman: "Marcus and Nathaniel Grange! You are both wanted in connection to the illegal killing of Rance Durban. You are bound by law to stand down!"

Durban, as can be seen by the above quote, is the last name of the man the Grange brothers killed. Burgess is Rance Burgess, the name of the man in "Heart of Gold" that kills Nandi. Hessian is the last name of Stitch, Jayne's past partner in crime in the episode "Jaynestown."
9. While at the Academy, River is sending home letters that are full of made up events. Whose ball did she inquire about?

Answer: The Darbanvilles'

Simon, to his parents: "Did you have a good time at the Darbanvilles' ball this year? River thought it was duller than last year's. But since we don't know anybody named Darbanville, I'm having trouble judging. Did you even read these?"

Harbatkin is the fake name on the ship's registration that Mal gives to the Alliance men to get Shepherd Book some medical care in this episode. Elder Gommen is the man whose township the crew helps out in "Our Mrs. Reynolds." The Cambersons are the family with the giant hodgeberry bushes that Simon and River found when they were children.
10. How old was River when she started correcting Simon's spelling?

Answer: 3

When Simon is trying to explain to his parents that River is in trouble at the Alliance Academy, one piece of evidence is that River is misspelling words in her letters. His parents give him a blank look, to which he responds, "She started correcting my spelling when she was three." They still don't believe him. Poor River.
