In season four, the department Rachel worked in at Bloomingdale's was eliminated and she was reassigned to being a personal shopper. She had been about to quit when her new client, Joshua, came in. She immediately developed a crush on him and tried various ways to get him to be with her, including giving him two tickets to a basketball game (she meant to ask him to go with her) and staging a fake party to invite him to. In the end, she did get him but ended up moving too fast and scaring him off when she suggested they get married, after only dating for a few weeks and not very long after he split with his former wife.

At the time this episode was filmed, Jennifer Aniston and Tate Donovan were a couple in real life.

Answer: When Ross, Chandler's college roommate, brought him home for Thanksgiving

When the series began, Chandler and Monica were both already living in their respective apartments across the hall from each other, but we later learned that they knew each other before living in the building. Chandler and Ross were roommates in college, and we found out in the season five episode "TOW All the Thanksgivings" that Ross brought Chandler to his parents' house for Thanksgiving 1987 and that's when Chandler and Monica first met. In the same episode, we found out that Chandler calling her fat behind her back that day was what led Monica to lose a lot of weight.

Chandler and Monica first slept together in London at the end of season four, began dating in season five (secretly, at first) and married in the final episode of season seven.

Answer: At the coffee house while she was performing

In "TOW The Monkey", Phoebe was singing a song at Central Perk and David and his friend Max were at a nearby table talking. When Phoebe stopped her song to scold David and Max for talking while she was singing, David told her he had been talking about how beautiful she was. She liked that answer and they started seeing each other, but in the same episode, David found out that he was being given an opportunity to go to Minsk to do research with Max. Ultimately David decided to go and he and Phoebe broke up.

David showed up again in season seven, when he was in New York for one night only and he and Phoebe spent it together, and then in season nine when Phoebe was dating Mike. When David returned to New York for good, Phoebe and Mike had broken up and she reconnected with David. David was even going to ask her to marry her but Mike returned to her life and she chose Mike.

Answer: She was the niece of Rachel's boss and Ross took her out as a favour to Rachel.

Emily was the niece of Mr. Waltham, Rachel's boss when she worked as a personal shopper. Emily first appeared when Mr. Waltham asked Rachel to accompany Emily to the opera in "TOW Joey's Dirty Day". Rachel agreed but later made plans to see Joshua that night and convinced Ross to take Emily instead. Ross and Emily hit it off so much that they ended up going to a bed and breakfast in Vermont that night. They began dating, but were faced with the obstacle of a long distance relationship because Emily lived in London.

After a short time, they decided to get married and be together permanently, but at the wedding in the season four finale, Ross said Rachel's name at the altar. Emily was furious and wanted nothing to do with him. Ross almost won her back, after going to the extreme and agreeing he'd never see or talk to Rachel again, but ultimately Emily realized she couldn't trust him and they ended the marriage, having never truly spent a day together as husband and wife.

Actress Helen Baxendale played Emily. In season five, despite being part of a main storyline, she hardly appeared on screen and when she did in was while covered up in bed speaking to Ross on the phone; this was because Baxendale was pregnant and was unable to be in New York to film proper scenes as had originally been intended.

Answer: They took an acting class together.

Kathy first appeared in "TOW Joey's New Girlfriend". Chandler tried to ask her out when he saw her at the coffee house, but it turned out she was there waiting for Joey, who she was already seeing. The more Chandler got to know her, the more he really liked her and they ended up kissing one night when Joey was late getting home. Kathy broke up with Joey after that, at their acting class with Joey saying that at first he thought she was doing a scene and so he let people watch. Chandler then confessed to Joey that he was in love with Kathy and had kissed her.

Joey was very hurt and angry and this almost ruined his friendship with Chandler. While he was still mad at Chandler, Kathy came by (while Chandler was contained in a box at Monica's during Thanksgiving dinner) and told Chandler she was leaving and didn't want to come between him and Joey. Joey saw what there was between Joey and Kathy, decided he could forgive Chandler, and encouraged him to be with Kathy.

Despite the chemistry between them, Chandler and Kathy's relationship was short lived when they had a fight and she ended up sleeping with her co-star in a play.

Janice, known for her unbelievably whiny, nasal voice, annoying laugh and tendency to exclaim "Oh... my... God!", was presumably either already dating Chandler when the series began, or met him off-screen very shortly after the start of the series. Her first appearance was in the show's fifth episode, "TOW the East German Laundry Detergent". In this episode, Chandler wanted to break up with her and it was implied that they'd been seeing each other for a little while already. Their relationship did end in this episode (although Phoebe ended up doing the breaking up for Chandler because she was really good at it), but they got back together a few more times until Chandler broke up with her for good by pretending to move to Yemen midway through season four. It was revealed in the season five episode "TOW Chandler's Work Laugh", in which Janice very briefly dated Ross, that Janice still thought he was in Yemen.

'Chan and Jan' may not have dated again after that, but she made appearances in every season of the show, except season six when her voice was just heard on tape. Her surprise appearances included in season eight when she ended up sharing Rachel's hospital room while they both were in labour and in season nine when she showed up at the fertility clinic where Monica and Chandler were having tests done.

Answer: In the apartment building

In the season one episode "TOW the Blackout", a cat attacked Ross on Monica and Rachel's balcony. Later, Rachel went around the building trying to find the cat's owner and met Paolo (who was the owner of the cat) at his apartment. They began a passionate relationship, leading Ross to become very jealous of Paolo.

Rachel broke things off with Paolo when he made a pass at Phoebe, though she also slept with him in season two when she was upset about Ross dating Julie. Paolo was never seen again after that.

Answer: She catered a party for him.

In the season two episode "TOW Ross and Rachel... You Know", Monica's mom got her a job catering a party for the newly divorced Richard. They hit it off and though they were initially put off by the age difference between them, they ended up dating. Things got very serious but they broke up in "TOW Barry and Mindy's Wedding" because of a fundamental disagreement. Monica wanted to have kids and Richard, already having adult children, didn't want anymore.

Monica reconnected with Richard briefly in the third season, as "just friends" (but friends who slept with each other), but they realized that nothing had changed and ended things before they got serious again. Richard showed up again in season six, when Monica was seriously involved with Chandler, and told Monica he wanted to marry her. Monica chose Chandler, who was about to propose himself, and Richard stepped aside after speaking to Chandler.

Answer: At Monica and Chandler's wedding

Mona worked at Monica's restaurant and Ross met her at the reception of Monica and Chandler's wedding in "The One After I Do". He tried to correct the seating arrangements so that he would be sitting at her table but ended up accidentally placing himself at the kids' table. He still impressed Mona, though, when he sweetly danced with all the little girls at the wedding.

He and Mona later began dating and it even became semi-serious when he gave her a key to his apartment (though, he later had the locks changed). Poor Mona often got cast aside when Ross had to deal with Rachel and her pregnancy. For example, he once abandoned Mona at the movies because Rachel was having pains and went to the hospital. Mona dumped Ross when he lied to her about Rachel moving in with him. Mona was seen once again, when Ross broke into her apartment to try to steal one of his shirts back.

Answer: Joey arranged a blind date.

In the season nine episode "TOW the Pediatrician", Joey and Phoebe agreed to set each other up on blind dates. Joey completely forgot, however, and on the day of the date when Phoebe asked him who he was setting her up with, he blurted out "Mike". He then went to Central Perk, and called out "Mike?" Mike Hannigan happened to be there, and Joey talked him into going out with Phoebe. When Phoebe found out, she was upset that Joey set her up with a complete stranger, but she and Mike really hit it off and started a relationship. They even agreed to move in together, but Phoebe decided she did want marriage in the future and Mike absolutely didn't, so they broke up.

They got back together at the end of season nine in Barbados, after Phoebe had gotten back together with David. Monica found out that David was going to propose to Phoebe and Phoebe was going to say yes even though she still had feelings for Mike. Monica phoned Mike to tell him what was going on and he decided he did want to be with Phoebe. He showed up in Barbados to propose to her. She turned down the proposal but took him back and they renewed their relationship, eventually marrying about midway through the tenth season.
