Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colonel Sherman T. Potter

Answer: Sophie

Actor Harry Morgan (1915-2011) was on "December Bride" and its spinoff in the 1950s and, in the 1960s, was Officer Bill Gannon, Joe Friday's sidekick on "Dragnet". After appearing in many TV series like "Gunsmoke" and "Hec Ramsey", Harry wound up replacing Lt. Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) as the kindly doctor and career soldier Sherman T. Potter.

He was in charge of the eccentric crew of the 4077th MASH unit. We never got to see his wife Mildred, but we did get to meet his beloved horse, Sophie.
2. Corporal Walter O'Reilly

Answer: Radar

Gary Burghoff played the young, child-like Corporal Walter O'Reilly originally from Ottumwa, Iowa. Walter slept with his teddy bear and consumed grape Nehi drinks. Everyone called him "Radar" because of his uncanny ability to predict when injured soldiers were being transported to the hospital, and he could anticipate Colonel Blake's and Colonel Potter's orders before they gave them.
3. Major Frank Burns

Answer: Ferret Face

One of the most deliberately annoying, arrogant, adulterous, selfish characters on the show was Major Frank Burns, played by Larry Linville. The only thing he seemed to care about was sucking up to authority, money and his affair with "Hot Lips" Houlihan. Apparently he was disliked even as a child when his brother gave him the nickname "Ferret Face".

When this appellation was discovered by Hawkeye and Trapper John, they used it mercilessly.
4. Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger

Answer: TV's first crossdresser

Corporal Max Klinger was played by Jamie Farr. In the earlier seasons, Max always dressed in women's clothing trying to get a "Section 8", i.e., released from the Army for being crazy. In the latter seasons, after Gary Burghoff left the show, he became Colonel Potter's chief clerk and was more efficient and Army appropriate.

He never lost his desire to return home to Toledo, Ohio until, ironically, he married a Korean woman and remained behind.
5. Major Margaret Houlihan

Answer: Lt. Col. Penobscott

Head nurse Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan was played by Loretta Swit. She was the only female protagonist on the show. Margaret was a tough, strong role model. She held her own among her testosterone-filled colleagues. Her major (no pun intended) flaw was her continued affair with the married Major Burns.

She finally got smart and met and married Lt. Colonel Donald Penobscott but, sadly, the marriage was short-lived.
6. Captain B.J. Hunnicutt

Answer: Erin

Mike Farrell played Captain B.J. Hunnicutt who was the replacement for Trapper John McIntyre (Wayne Rogers). B.J. was a tall, mustachioed, soft spoken, sensitive and funny man, and quickly became Hawkeye's best friend and conspirator. He was married with an infant daughter, Erin, about whom he spoke often.

He and his family were from Mill Valley, California. We never found out what his initials (B.J.) really stood for; it was either "anything you want" or his parents, Bea and Jay.
7. Father Francis Mulcahy

Answer: Becomes deaf

Father Francis Mulcahy was the Chaplin for the 4077th. As played by William Christopher, he was religious but not pious. While the war around him sometimes tested his faith, he never lost it, and always had time for those in his charge, along with the orphans housed nearby.

In the final episode, while the war was winding down, he was hit trying to save the POWs in the camp. This brave action caused him to lose his hearing and become an advocate for the deaf.
8. Private Igor Straminsky

Answer: Mess hall detail

One of the frequently appearing characters was Private Igor Straminsky. Played by Jeff Maxwell, Igor was in charge of the food distribution in the mess hall. He was constantly mocked for the quality of the food he served, which consisted of pretty much 'powdered' everything.

However, when he was supplied some fresh vegetables by a Korean child, he was able to create some fresh coleslaw, to the delight of everyone.
9. Sergeant Luther Rizzo

Answer: Motorpool

G.W. Bailey played Sergeant Luther Rizzo. Rizzo was a cigar smoking, hard-drinking, card playing slacker who was in charge of the Motorpool, i.e., the group of military vehicles used by the members of the MASH unit. He would often sleep under the jeeps, and believed that if you never smiled, the Army would leave you alone. Bailey went on to appear in "Police Academy" and on the TV shows "The Closer" and "Major Crimes".
10. Major Sidney Freedman

Answer: A 'shrink'

Major Sidney Freeman was an Army psychiatrist and former Army surgeon, played by Allan Arbus. In his first appearance, he was introduced as Milton Freeman but that would later change. Freeman was first summoned to do an evaluation of Klinger who continued to dress in women's clothes to get a discharge.

The doctor told Max he was not crazy ("Catch-22") but that he could list him as a transvestite and homosexual. Klinger vociferously denied the offer.
11. Soon-Lee Han

Answer: Klinger's bride

This one may not have been fair because the character of Soon-Lee Han only appeared in the last two episodes of "M*A*S*H", i.e., "As Time Goes By" and "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen", in 1983. Soon-Lee is a Korean woman who is accused of shooting a G.I., and Klinger is in charge of putting her in prison.

She is found innocent and continues the search for her parents but, in the interim, Klinger falls in love with her and they marry. Rosalind Chao played the role.
12. Mr. Kwang

Answer: Korean Army medic

Actor Soon-Tek Oh portrays Mister Kwang, a South Korean Army anesthesiologist who works at the 4077th, in season three of the series. When he gets into an argument with Major Burns, Trapper and Hawkeye defend him and help him get a pass to see his pregnant wife.

They all wind up back at the 4077th where Hawkeye delivers Mr. Kwang's son who he names Radar Benjamin Franklin Trapper John Henry Kwang. Soon-Tek Oh (1932-2018) was also the voice of Fa Zhou in "Mulan".
13. Rosie

Answer: Eileen Saki

When the members of the M*A*S*H unit wanted some escape from the horrors of the Korean War, they could often be found at Rosie's Bar. The bar was an off-base G.I. 'watering hole' located in Uijeonjbu, South Korea. Eileen Saki played the role of the tough-talking, no-nonsense bar owner. FYI, the bar, which was featured in both the "M*A*S*H" movie and TV series, was based on an actual real life bar in Seoul, called Rose's Bar.
14. Major Charles Winchester

Answer: Boston

Major Charles Emerson Winchester III, of the Boston Winchesters, was a wealthy, arrogant thoracic surgeon who had been stationed in Tokyo during the Korean War. While playing cribbage with Lt. Colonel Baldwin, Charles wins $600. In order to avoid paying his debt, Baldwin ships Winchester to the 4077th, where he serves to replace the AWOL Frank Burns. Major Winchester first appears in the sixth season of the show and is wonderfully played by David Ogden Stiers.
15. Lieutenant Kellye Yamato

Answer: RN

Lieutenant Kellye Yamato was a nurse who appeared in 167 episodes of "M*A*S*H". With the exception of the main characters, Nurse Kellye appeared in more episodes than any other recurring character. She was Major Houlihan's level-headed, right-hand woman. Both Nurse Yamato and the actress who played her, i.e., Kellye Nakahara, were from Oahu, Hawaii. Kellye Nakahara and her real life husband, David Wallett, moved to Pasadena, California.
