"How Much Keeffe Is in this Movie Anyway?" Quiz

Miles O'Keeffe! My favorite episode of "MST3K" is probably "Cave Dwellers", which doesn't have much to do with the primitive people of the title.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nominal thing are Joel and the bots doing in the first scene of the episode?

Answer: Giving themselves new names

Their new names include Sugar Magnolia, José Jimenez, Stockard Channing, and Alan Parsons Project. Joel decides that things are getting out of hand and goes back to their regular names.
2. According to Tom, what kind of format are the opening credits presented in?

Answer: Shoebox

The visuals are on top while the cast and crew names appear below on a black background. The visuals aren't even from the movie! In the host skit parody of the opening credits, Cambot puts the image in the "shoebox format" while running nonsense credits on the bottom.

Two other titles for this movie are "Ator 2: The Blade Master" and "Ator the Invincible 2".
3. Akronas says that imagination is the most important thing. What does Crow say the next most important thing is?

Answer: Peanut butter

How random. The bots don't seem so impressed by the power of imagination. It's a bit hard to hear under Crow's voice, but it sounds like the next most important thing is prudence.
4. Akronas narrates a long flashback to explain what to Mila?

Answer: Ator's life

Akronas recaps the events of the first Ator movie, even though they have nothing to do with this movie. Crow says, "This is the part of the film we like to call, She had to ask." To be fair, Mila doesn't ask about Ator; Akronas volunteers that information himself. For the rest of the movie, Joel and the bots are afraid that they'll be subjected to another flashback.
5. What do Joel and the bots repeatedly call Mila's breastplate?

Answer: Hubcap

"My hubcap's chafing!" The "breastplate" is a circular metal piece that doesn't provide much armor, as Mila is shot in the chest just above the plate. Joel points out in a host segment that the movie had a low budget and that he thinks Mila's wearing a hubcap.
6. About a third of the way through the episode, as the protagonists enter the caves, Tom decides to recap the action so far. What does Joel say?

Answer: "Nothing really."

He's not far off--after a cave fight that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie, we get an extended flashback of the previous movie, which likewise doesn't advance the plot. Then Mila leaves to find Ator to help protect the Geometric Nucleus, which does...something. Not much motivation or clarity to be found.
7. The SOL crew point out what anachronistic feature(s) of Akronas's home?

Answer: Handrails

"Use the handrails--I invented them for a reason." Why a castle has modern handrails is never explained. We're also never given a reason why Ator has a mechanically-controlled gate inside his cave.

The castle's well-lit secret passageway, however, has no handrails.
8. Calling back to what Akronas says about the Geometric Nucleus, where does Crow say that the two captured villagers come from?

Answer: Everywhere and Nowhere

Akronas says that the Geometric Nucleus is "everything and nothing", which makes Crow ask if he could please be more vague about it. Ator lives at the Ends of the Earth.
9. Joel keeps making fun of Ator for saying what?

Answer: "No!"

During the attack on the village, Ator is tied to a stake and can't do anything except shout "No!" He doesn't put much effort into that simple word, so Joel and Tom rag on him for the rest of the movie.
10. Joel demonstrates what aspect of movie making in the third host skit?

Answer: Sound effects

With a variety of props, he explains how Foley artists create sound. He uses pieces of meat on slammers to recreate the movie's unconvincing punching sounds, Jell-O in pantyhose for boots stuck in mud, and celery for bones breaking.
11. Tom is bothered because the snakes are doing what?

Answer: Growling

"Wait a minute folks, we have snakes growling here." Snakes that also line up skulls. Luckily for Ator, the giant snake is an easily defeatable puppet.
12. The crew can't seem to get Thong's name right. Among other things, what do they call him?

Answer: Gomez

"Gomez, I've invented the wheel!" They think he resembles Gomez from "The Addams Family". They also call him Dong, Fong, and Wong, and correct each other throughout the movie.
13. At several points, Tom and Crow become irate when Joel calls graphic novels "comic books".

Answer: True

Tom calls the castle where Akronas and Mila live "Stately Wayne Manor", a Batman reference. Joel starts talking about the Batman comic books, which is when Tom insists that they're really graphic novels, and the joke continues throughout the episode.
14. After seeing the ridiculous hang glider and bombs that Ator somehow invented, Joel and Crow suggest that he made a tank out of what (these are featured prominently in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail")?

Answer: Coconuts

And he made his horse out of mud and sticks. He also had time to paint stripes on his hang glider. A major continuity error occurs when an overhead shot shows Ator landing in a field by a dirt road. The next shot, a closeup, shows him landing on top of the castle. All the crew can say to that is, "Huh?" and "How'd he do that?"
15. When the movie's over, what does Tom tell the Mads about "Cave Dwellers"?

Answer: It's the worst movie they've ever been sent.

The bots then show several anachronisms they found in the film, like Ator flying over a modern city and an extra wearing sunglasses. If Tom thinks this is the worst movie ever, he's in for a shock: at this point in the series, they haven't seen "Monster A-Go Go" or "Manos" yet...

There are four movies in this "Conan" ripoff series. "Cave Dwellers" is the second.
