MST3K Trivia Questions

1. From the first episode of the new season on Netflix featuring Jonah Ray (as Jonah Heston), Tom Servo says "Nothing says 'international' like a picture of the U.S. Capitol Building" while watching the opening credits to what film?

From Quiz
Riffs from "Mystery Science Theater 3000."

Answer: Reptilicus

Jonah and the bots watch a Danish monster movie titled "Reptilicus" about a dragon-like monster that attacks Denmark. The riff is in reference to a film company called American International Pictures with what appears to be the U.S. Capitol Building as its logo.

2. What group of people is the two-part short "Hired!" aimed at?

From Quiz "MST3K" Briefs and Shorts

Answer: Car salesmen

"Hired!" is shown in two parts before "Bride of the Monster" and "Manos: The Hands of Fate". A newly-hired salesman can't sell any cars. His manager gets advice from his dad, who puts a handkerchief on his head and swats at "imaginary elves". The crew give additional advice, like "live at home til you're 40". The short was made by Chevrolet for training employees.

3. What does Crow want for Christmas?

From Quiz "Santa Claus Kidnapped by Martians!"

Answer: He wants to decide who lives and who dies.

That's a rather dark thing to say on a show aimed at families. The creators thought they could get away with it because the line is said by a robot. Gypsy wants a pony, but Joel says that there's no room for one on the ship.

4. In the first scene, Crow and Tom have packed their bags and decided to do what?

From Quiz "Deep Hurting!"

Answer: Run away to another part of the ship.

Magic Voice reports on their location. After only a few seconds, they stop, argue, and come back. Just like Gypsy thought.

5. What mischief is going on in the Satellite of Love in the first scene?

From Quiz "MST3K": "Ring of Terror"

Answer: Tom and Crow trick Joel into thinking the movie's starting.

They get Cambot to make the Movie Sign lights come on, so Joel runs off. Crow says, "He actually did it...What a maroon!" When the commercial sign comes up, Crow has a hard time pushing the button and has to hit it with his head. When Joel gets back, he takes it well; he even says that he programmed the bots to rib him every so often.

6. What nominal thing are Joel and the bots doing in the first scene of the episode?

From Quiz "How Much Keeffe Is in this Movie Anyway?"

Answer: Giving themselves new names

Their new names include Sugar Magnolia, José Jimenez, Stockard Channing, and Alan Parsons Project. Joel decides that things are getting out of hand and goes back to their regular names.

7. What is Joel's contribution to the Invention Exchange?

From Quiz "All Teenagers Are from Outer Space!"

Answer: Scratch-and-sniff report cards

The idea is to use smell, a sense strongly tied to memory, to bring back memories of school. Most of them are unfortunately unpleasant...

8. In the first scene of the episode, what has Joel programmed the bots to do?

From Quiz "Is Somebody Filming a Bad Movie Out Here?"

Answer: Think that everything Joel does is brilliant.

They praise everything he says, and Crow even nuzzles him. Joel starts to have second thoughts about their sycophantic behavior and removes the modules after the commercial break.

9. At the start of the episode, what human body part are Tom and Crow trying to give themselves?

From Quiz "MST3K": "The Girl in Lovers Lane"

Answer: Belly buttons

They intend to do this by drilling holes in themselves. Joel is shocked at first, but then allows it. Tom regrets it; Crow does not, and thus they contemplate their navels.

10. Crow T. Robot proclaims himself as "space child" with his all-seeing eyes. Mike removes his mechanical eyes and discovers what?

From Quiz "Mystery Science Theater 3000" : "Mole People"

Answer: They're from J and B Novelty company and cost $1.98.

When Mike Nelson plucks out Crow's novelty eyes, he quotes a verse from Shakespeare's "King Lear" (Act III, Scene vii) where the evil Duke of Cornwall viciously extirpates both of the aged Earl of Gloucester's eyes. As he brutally pulls out the second eye, he exclaims: "Out, vile jelly! Where is thy lustre now?"

11. Early in the film, the police find something lying in a field. What is it?

From Quiz "MST3K": "The Creeping Terror"

Answer: A UFO that crash-landed

This craft is the source of the alien that will spend the rest of the movie attacking people. We are not told what planet it came from.

12. In the opening scene, where are the main characters hanging out?

From Quiz "Mystery Science Theater 3000" - "Alien from L.A."

Answer: The beach

A surfer confronts Kathy Ireland, whose character in the film is named Wanda, and, rather rudely, pushes her glasses back up her nose. The hapless beachgoer is a contrast with the brave and daring character she will become when she enters an alternate world.

13. To what series of books does Tom Servo compare the film?

From Quiz "MST3K": "Being From Another Planet"

Answer: The Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys mysteries

Tom says this early in the film. The movie "Being From Another Planet" was also known as "Time Walker," and was released in 1982.

14. In the opening credits, the riffs begin straight away. What does Tom Servo call the movie's "A.I. Productions"?

15. What was Tom singing as Crow was painting him with nude colored paint?
