Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Robert Baratheon
Answer: The Usurper
Robert Baratheon's nickname was "The Usurper" by people who had been loyal to the House Targaryen; Robert overtook their throne seventeen years before the show premiered. Robert was otherwise a fairly popular leader but fell victim to kingly pressures and turned to drink and carousing, driving the realm into deep debt and internal dysfunction.
He called upon his oldest and most trusted friend, Eddard Stark, to join him at King's Landing to help bring stability to the realm.
2. Tyrion Lannister
Answer: The Imp
Tyrion Lannister may have been called The Imp by some, but he's always been the smartest guy in the room. Born into the wealthiest of families, Tyrion's mother died during his childbirth, for which his father, Tywin, blamed him. While small in stature, Tyrion has a towering intellect, a decent moral center, and a sharp wit.
3. Aerys II Targaryen
Answer: The Mad King
When the show opened, King Aerys Targaryen was long dead, but his reputation as the tyrannical and paranoid Mad King remained. He had started out as a competent ruler, but as he lost his mind, the Lannisters engineered his downfall and he was killed by one of his own men.
4. Melisandre
Answer: The Red Woman
Melisandre is a Red Priestess who follows the the Lord of Light, and is often referred to as The Red Woman. She may not bat 1000 with her prophecies, but as she demonstrates in season six, wherein a major character is resurrected from the dead, she has some mad skills.
5. Jaime Lannister
Answer: The Kingslayer
Jaime Lannister is the elder son of the Lannister family, but, because he was a member of the King's Guard, he is not eligible to inherit the great family holdings. That honor goes to his younger brother, Tyrion. Despite this, Jaime was fond of his younger brother as they grew up, especially when Tyrion helped Jaime overcome his learning disability so he could read. Jaime is also overly fond of his twin sister, Cersei. Jaime grew into a highly skilled swordsman, and was chosen by his father to deliver the deadly blow to the Mad King when the senior Lannister decided it was time to end the Dragon dynasty.
6. Petyr Baelish
Answer: Littlefinger
Petryr Baelish is the head of the minor House Baelish, which is located in the finger-shaped peninsula in the northeast region of Westeros. An ambitious social-climber, Baelish has spies all over the realm and gathers intelligence from his wide range of brothers.
He is called Littlefinger partially because he was a small child and partially because of his finger-shaped homeland, but as he has his finger in so many pies, it's an apt nickname.
7. Sandor Clegane
Answer: The Hound
Sandor Clegane is called The Hound for his giant size and fierce demeanor. He has scars from his childhood when his even fiercer brother, The Mountain, held his face to a fire over a toy. He served as an intimidating henchman to the Lannisters and Baratheons, but goes out on his own after the Battle of the Blackwater.
8. Mance Rayder
Answer: The King Beyond the Wall
The land Beyond the Wall was the great unknown when the show opened. In the past, it was full of terrifying and inexplicable shape-shifters and creatures with bad intentions. The Wall was meant to keep them all at bay, though it also separated the formal residents of Westeros from the people who stayed on the other side, called Wildings or the Free Folk.
When the show opened, Mance was the King Beyond the Wall.
9. Eddard Stark
Answer: Ned
Ned may not be the most exotic of nicknames, but it applies to one of the most beloved characters in the show: Eddard Stark. Head of the House of Stark, Ned is the reliable, honorable father of Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon and two wards, Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy.
The story follows the experiences of all of his children as they venture out into the wide, weird world of Westeros and Essos.
10. Daenerys Targaryen
Answer: Mother of Dragons
Daenerys Targaryen is the Game of Throne's equivalent of Odysseus. As she makes her way back home the far east, she encounters a wide variety of adventures, making more friends than enemies as she builds an army. She has many nicknames, one of which is Mother of Dragons, as she has three real, fire-breathing dragons at her beck and call.
