When Janeway tells Chakotay of her plan to take the Delta Flyer in search of a cortical node, Paris volunteers to go along. He tells her that the last time she took the Delta Flyer to confront the Borg, it ended up in a couple thousand pieces. He suggests that a good pilot could help her bring it back in one piece. Tuvok then says, "Particularly if he's accompanied by an experienced tactical officer." At Chakotay's insistence, she decides to take Paris and Tuvok with her.

As they head to the shuttle bay, Icheb approaches Janeway in the corridor. When he learns what she is doing, he says that he should join them because he has experience in Borg technology. Janeway tells him that it is too dangerous and she is unwilling to let him take that risk.

Torres never requests to join her on the away mission to the Borg debris field.

The purple, white, and magenta Tarcanian wildflowers are in a silver vase. Neelix had also brought a kadis-kot board, and he volunteers to play with her. The Doctor tricks her into playing (by telling Neelix that in her "weakened state," Seven wouldn't stand a chance in kadis-kot). Seven tells Neelix that she prefers the green pieces and that he will use red.

Even though Seven is worried about how the simulations are going, she is not too preoccupied to beat Neelix. He says, "that makes what, uh, 16 to 3, your lead?" to which Seven responds, "16 to 2."

Right then Janeway and the Doctor enter sickbay with the bad news that they are unable to use the recovered cortical node from the debris field to save Seven.

When Icheb activated the Doctor, the Doctor was saying, "...forced to sedate you." Seven overrode his autonomy protocols and left her combadge in Sickbay. She went to engineering, where Torres told her that she would not tell him where she was. She tells Seven, "I've escaped the Doctor myself once or twice."

Seven tells Icheb that Janeway has agreed to administer the exam, and they will send his results in the next data stream to the Alpha Quadrant. Seven tells Icheb that Torres is extremely well-versed in warp mechanics and that Kim claims to have aced the quantum theory section.

When Icheb asks if she will help him review the material regarding astrometrics, Seven tells him that she will ask Paris to set aside some time. Icheb says, "I'd rather study with you." Seven replies that he has become too dependent on her and must learn to rely on others.

The Doctor is worried that removing Icheb's cortical node would kill Icheb. Icheb reminds him that he emerged from his maturation chamber before he was fully assimilated. As a result, his physiology is less dependent on his implants. He also argues that he is younger, so his body should adapt better to not having the cortical node (especially if the Doctor uses the technique of genetic resequencing).

They later present this idea to Janeway and Seven, but Seven refuses it. She claims that "as long as there is any chance" that Icheb won't survive, she is unwilling to consider it.

There are 10 names on the list that Seven brings up. Interestingly, the last seven names are taken from characters on the television show "The West Wing." The last name on the list is Ensign Charles Young, but Seven never says his name.

Janeway asks what the point is of Seven mentioning these people. Seven feels that Janeway accepted their deaths but will not accept hers. She thinks that Janeway feels that Seven has not come far enough in her progression of individuality. Seven thinks that she has disappointed Janeway. Janeway tells Seven that she hasn't failed and has become an extraordinary individual. She says, "if I'm having trouble accepting your condition, it's only because I don't want to lose a friend."

The Doctor tells Seven that she regenerated for 6 days because they needed to make sure that her implants had completely adapted to the new cortical node. Janeway says, "The good news, they have."

Seven learns that Icheb's road to recovery was a little bumpier than her own. However, luckily the damage to him is not permanent. As she tells Icheb that she has decided to help him study for the astrometrics portion of the academy exam, she begins to cry. The Doctor informs her and Icheb that her tears are not the result of a malfunction with her ocular implant.
