Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the primary mission of the Enterprise in this episode?

Answer: Decontamination of a planet

The Enterprise is on an urgent mission to decontaminate the planet Ariannus, which has been stricken with a bacterial infection. Every once in a while they have an actual mission to accomplish instead of being lured somewhere by a distress call.
2. The Enterprise encounters a vessel on an erratic course and brings it aboard by tractor beam. What type of vessel is it?

Answer: A Starfleet shuttlecraft

On the way to Ariannus, the Enterprise comes across a stolen Starfleet shuttlecraft. The internal atmosphere of the shuttlecraft has been compromised and the sole occupant is in danger. The ship is brought aboard the Enterprise and we are shocked to find the pilot is an alien who is half-black and half-white. Like, shoe polish black and white. With a straight line down the middle, no less.
3. The pilot of a vessel brought on board the Enterprise, Lokai, is not very forthcoming with information. What term does he use to describe the Enterprise crew?

Answer: "Monotone humans"

Lokai is brought to sickbay and Dr. McCoy is stumped by his alien physiology. McCoy assumes his two tone appearance must be a one-off mutation. But, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, right? McCoy pumps him up with whatever he could find in the medicine cabinet and Lokai recovers. Kirk tries to get some answers out of him and says he will take him to Starbase IV after their mission to face charges for stealing the shuttlecraft. Lokai gets frustrated and throws out the monotone slur.
4. An uninvited alien, Bele, appears on the Enterprise's bridge and demands Kirk return the other alien, Lokai, to their home world of Cheron. Why does Kirk refuse?

Answer: There is no extradition treaty with Cheron

Bele claims to be a police commissioner of some sort and has been hunting Lokai for some 50,000 years. That's a mighty long time to hold a grudge. He wants to bring Lokai back to Cheron to face charges for leading a revolt that caused many deaths back home. Since Cheron is not a member of the United Federation of Planets, there is no treaty with them that would allow for the exchange of prisoners. And really, Kirk doesn't have time for this nonsense. Now, imagine Bele's clothes are green with a big question mark on his chest and the Enterprise has just been invaded by The Riddler!
5. How did Bele take control of the Enterprise?

Answer: He used some kind of crazy mind control

From the way Kirk lets any ol' alien run free on his ship, he certainly could have hooked up a remote control. I mean, how many times have aliens wandered into Engineering? But no, he really did use some kind of crazy mind control. Bele won't take no for an answer from Kirk, so he uses his mind to will the Enterprise on a new course for Cheron.
6. When Bele takes control of the Enterprise, Kirk initiates the self-destruct sequence. Which of these officers did *not* give a destruct sequence code?

Answer: Chief Medical Officer McCoy

When Bele refuses to give navigational control back to him, Captain Kirk threatens to blow up the ship. Just watch Chekov's and Sulu's faces when they hear that! Kirk kicks off the destruct sequence with his authorization code, followed by Spock and Scotty. Why would a doctor be allowed to blow up the Enterprise anyway?
7. Just before the self-destruct timer runs out, Kirk gives the command to cancel it. What is that command?

Answer: "1-2-3 continuity, abort destruct order"

Kirk explains that once the destruct countdown reaches five seconds, no command can stop it. Bele sweats it out as the clock ticks down. Why he can't just use the same mind control he has over the ship's course to also control the destruct sequence is unknown. Anyway, he caves at six seconds. Just in time for Kirk to stop the Enterprise from going "boom".
8. After Kirk aborts the destruct sequence and before Bele releases control of the Enterprise, where is the ship heading to?

Answer: Nowhere, it's going in a circle

Kirk cancels the destruct order but they are not immediately back on course for Ariannus. Instead, the ship is going around in a circle at Warp 10 prompting Scotty to exclaim "we're going nowhere fast". Anyone feeling a bit dizzy? Once Bele finally releases his control then the Enterprise returns to its course for Ariannus.
9. The inhabitants of Cheron were locked in an eternal race war. Which race was the ruling order?

Answer: Right-side black

After Bele starship-jacked the Enterprise, Captain Kirk is in a forgiving mood and gives him and Lokai free run of the ship. What?! Par for the course with Kirk's command methods. He actually sits down for drinks with Bele, who tells him about the race war on Cheron. Kirk and Spock don't seem to understand the difference between Bele and Lokai. Both are half-black, half-white. Bele has to point out that he is black on the right side and part of the ruling race, whereas Lokai is white on the right and subservient. Something that is plainly obvious and we all noticed back at the beginning of the episode.
10. When the Enterprise arrives at Bele and Lokai's home world of Cheron, what do they find?

Answer: The entire population has annihilated themselves

The Enterprise crew completes its decontamination mission using spray tanks. Spray tanks in space? Bele once again takes control of the ship and sends it off to Cheron. Once they arrive, they find the global race war has decimated the planet and no one is left alive. Lokai flees the bridge with Bele in hot pursuit. Kirk does not give chase because "where are they going to go"? Sure, let a couple of lunatics run amok. Somehow, they both find a transporter room, know how to operate it and beam themselves down to the planet. Kirk is just happy to be done with them and takes off for Starbase IV.
