Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, a landing party from the U.S.S. Enterprise led by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock find the ruins of an ancient city on an unexplored planet. Why had they gone there?

Answer: To find a delirious Dr. McCoy

Dr. McCoy had accidentally been injected with an overdose of a drug called cordrazine. This caused him to fail to recognize anyone, to think he was in mortal danger, and to seek escape at any cost. Spock succesfully subdued him.
2. A gateway is discovered among the ruins on the planet, which is distorting time. What does it call itself?

Answer: The Guardian of Forever

The Guardian shows the group scenes from Earth's history, telling them they can visit any period of history that they wish. McCoy wakes up, jumps through, and disappears. The Enterprise suddenly disappears from orbit, and Kirk realizes that time has been altered by McCoy.
3. Kirk and Spock jump through the gateway, and end up in what year in their past?

Answer: 1930

They had gone through to follow McCoy and try to fix whatever he had done to change history. They land in New York City at the height of the Great Depression. Spock calls it "A rather barbaric period in your American history".
4. While stealing some clothes to wear, Kirk and Spock are stopped by a police officer. What does Kirk say happened to Spock to explain his pointed ears?

Answer: His head was caught in a mechanical rice picker when he was a child

The police officer doesn't seem to care about the ears, and tries to arrest them. They escape from the officer after Spock uses his Vulcan neck pinch on him.
5. Where do Kirk and Spock go to find shelter?

Answer: The basement of the 21st Street Mission

They are discovered by Edith Keeler, the woman who runs the mission. She decides to give them jobs, at 15 cents per hour.
6. What device is carried by Spock which carries the information on what they need to do in the past?

Answer: Tricorder

He was recording the Guardian with it at the time McCoy jumped through, and he needs to access it to find out what they need to do to change history back to the way it should be.
7. What does Spock ask Kirk to buy to help them to complete their mission?

Answer: 5 or 6 pound block of platinum

Spock builds a "mneumonic memory circuit" to get the information from the tricorder. He is frustrated by the vacuum tube culture in which they have ended up, and says it's "hardly very far ahead of stone knives and bearskins".
8. While walking with Edith Keeler, what is the theme of the book that Kirk mentions will be written in a hundred years?

Answer: Let me help

He says it will be written by someone "from a planet circling the far left star in Orion's belt". Captain Kirk and Edith Keeler are enjoying their time together.
9. What is the homeless man in the alley carrying when he sees McCoy arrive from the future?

Answer: A bottle of milk

He drops the bottle on the ground, where it shatters. McCoy freaks him out by yelling that he won't kill him, and wondering about what the hospitals must be like. Unfortunately, the man picks up McCoy's phaser and accidentally kills himself.
10. What was the change in Earth's history that caused the Enterprise to disappear?

Answer: The Nazis won WWII

A peace movement led by Edith Keeler delayed the United States' entry into WWII, and gave the Germans enough time to develop the atomic bomb first. This helped the Germans to win the war. In that alternate history, Starfleet never comes into existence.
11. What event has to occur to put history back onto its correct path, and make the Enterprise reappear?

Answer: Edith Keeler must die

In his tricorder, Spock finds two different newspaper articles. One is from 1930, where Keeler dies in a traffic accident. The other is from 1936, where Keeler is meeting with President Roosevelt, urging him to stay out of the war. If she lives, the alternate history will occur. The problem with this is that Kirk has fallen in love with her.
12. Where is Kirk taking Keeler at the end of the episode, when he and Spock meet up with McCoy?

Answer: To a Clark Gable movie

While they are walking together, she mentions McCoy, whom she has nursed back to health. Surprised, he runs back across the street to the mission, where he and Spock see McCoy. Keeler starts walking across the street to them, when she is hit by a truck. McCoy tries to save her, but Kirk stops him.
13. How long does Scotty say they were gone when Kirk, Spock, and McCoy return to the ruins through the gateway?

Answer: Only a moment

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy look shaken when they return, and the Guardian tells them that everything has been restored to the way it was when they first arrived.
14. What famous night time soap opera actress played the tragic role of Edith Keeler?

Answer: Joan Collins

Joan Collins is best known for her role in "Dynasty", but she also appeared in dozens of other t.v. shows, including "The Virginian", "Mission: Impossible", "Space: 1999", and "The Love Boat". She has starred in over a dozen stage productions, and in over 50 movies.

Some of the best known are "Land of the Pharaohs" (1954), "Island in the Sun" (1956), "If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium" (1969), "Tales From the Crypt" (1972), and "The Big Sleep" (1977).
15. "Star Trek" episodes have been written by many different writers. Which established sci-fi writer wrote the script for "The City on the Edge of Forever"?

Answer: Harlan Ellison

Harlan Ellison complained for years afterwards that the "Star Trek" producers made so many changes to his script that he could barely recognize it. He wrote a book of his own about it in 1995 that contained the original script. He is also known for writing many other books, including "Web of the City" (1958), and "The Sound of a Scythe" (1960). Aside from "Star Trek", Ellison also has written scripts to many other television shows, including "The Flying Nun", "Logan's Run", "Bob Hope Chrysler Theater", "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.", "Batman", and "The Outer Limits".
