Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the four choices, who did NOT swim out to Desmond's sailboat?

Answer: Bernard

At the end of "Three Minutes", the people on the beach see a sailboat just offshore. When the finale begins, the trio swim out to the boat. Once aboard, Desmond shoots at them from below until he runs out of ammo. Then, Jack kicks in the hatch door and finds a drunk Desmond down inside.
2. Desmond tells Jack that he'd been at sea for two and half weeks, heading due west. He was clear he did not intend to end back up on their island. What did he compare their world to, in this loud conversation?

Answer: a snow globe

Desmond told Jack he'd acquired a steady nine knots and should have arrived in Fiji in less than a week's time. His explanation for ending back on the island was that there was "no world out there" any longer and that they were all inside a big snow globe.
3. We learn in Desmond's flashback that he was saving a book for his final read before death. What was the name of that book?

Answer: Our Mutual Friend

"Our Mutual Friend" is reviewed to be Charles Dickens' darkest novel, and it is his last complete work. Desmond retrieved it when he was released from prison and dishonorably discharged from the British Armed Forces. Desmond did not know it then, but the woman he loved had placed a note inside to accompany him in prison.

He did not take the book inside the prison with him, because he was saving it for his very last read.
4. Desmond took Charles Widmore's offer of money, to leave Penny alone.

Answer: False

After Desmond met Libby in Dina's coffee shop, we learned he'd turned down Widmore's money. He had decided to race around the world, in what he referred to as "his race". He told that part to Penny, so I assume it was a race organized by, or formerly participated in by, Charles Widmore.

Gary Troup is the author of "Bad Twin". Gary Troup is a fictional character of the "Lostverse", supposedly killed in the crash of Oceanic flight 815 in September of 2004. In his novel "Bad Twin", he created more fictional characters (one assumes) named Cliff, Zander, Arthur and Vivian Widmore.

Cliff was searching for his identical twin, Zander, labeled the bad twin in their family dynamic. Cliff hired mediocre detective Paul Artisan (Arzt?) to find Zander. Paul interviewed Zander's close pal Keith (nicknamed Moth, an episode and theme for season one) for info on Zander. In the book, the Widmore office building housed the Hanso Foundation, the Widmores were of Scottish decent (as is Desmond), and Gary dedicated his book to his girlfriend. His girlfriend is Cindy, Oceanic flight attendant and the last abductee of the "Others" before Ana Lucia shot Shannon (Shannon was Cliff's dead wife in the book as well). Many real books and stories are mentioned in "Bad Twin". It is my unsubstantiated theory that all the books are inside the hatch, or whatever is now left the hatch. "Turn of the Screw" is mentioned and already known to be inside the hatch.

Both Hurley and Sawyer were seen reading Gary's manuscript "Bad Twin"
in season two. Jack even snatched it from Sawyer and threw it into the fire.
5. What was the name of the boat that belonged to Libby's husband before he died?

Answer: Elizabeth

Libby paid for Desmond's coffee, and the two sat down for a conversation. He found out that Libby's husband David had passed away about a month prior to their meeting. When she found out he needed a sailboat for a race around the world, she gave Desmond her husband's sailboat. David hadn't had the chance to sail to the Mediterranean Sea as planned, so she felt he would have wanted Desmond to have it now. Desmond had eight months to prepare, and he told Libby he'd win the race for love. Desmond meant for his love (Penny), and for her love (David) as well. David is her husband's name, Desmond's middle name, and Hurley's imaginary friend's name is Dave. Hmm..
6. When talking to Sayid, what did Desmond call the "Others"?

Answer: hostiles

He said this when Sayid asked for the use of his sailboat. He told Sayid to use it, but said he'd need to find someone to sail it. That made it clear that Desmond would not be sailing the boat. Desmond had heard the name "hostiles" from Kelvin, while the two were still down in the hatch together.
7. What did Hurley think that the giant green bird said, as it swooped down over the group?

Answer: his name

It did sound like that bird said "Hurley" as it flew down toward them. Sawyer sarcastically agreed with Hurley's idea that it said his name, and the closed captioning informed us that the bird had caw 'Hurley' as it passed.
8. What did one snowman say to the other snowman?

Answer: "smells like carrots"

This line was a code. When John first encountered Desmond, at the start of season two, Desmond said this line to him. Kelvin said that same line to Desmond three years earlier. I believe this was the line one would say when relieving the people inside The Swan. So, in this episode John asked Desmond "so what did one snowman say to the other snowman?" Desmond delivered the answer we never heard in the season two premiere.
9. Of these choices, who first noticed the unusual four toed stone leg, of which the rest of the statue was missing?

Answer: Sayid

After Sun had relieved herself on the boat, Jin took her over to where Sayid was using binoculars to see something in the distance. She looked through them at Sayid's discovery. It was a left leg, knee to foot, made of stone, set on a stone platform which was atop a rock, with its foot dressed in a sandal like shoe.

The rest of the statue was gone. From season one through season two, and in the novel "Bad Twin", many references have been made to Greek Mythology. Homer's "Odyssey" has been mentioned, in which Odysseus' wife is named Penelope (like Penelope Widmore, Desmond's love).

There is a four toed (our stone statue..) cyclops (like the giant single eye on the wall of the Swan) in the "Odyssey" poem. In "Bad Twin" Zander Widmore spent time in an organization called Helios.

Helios was a sun god in Greek Mythology.
10. We find out, via Desmond's flashback, who edited the film inside the Swan. Who was it?

Answer: Kelvin's partner, Radzinksy

Desmond watched the film and asked why pieces were missing. We do not know why they are missing, only that Radzinksy made edits for some reason. Here's my question- if they were not allowed to leave the Swan, how'd the edits find their way inside a "Bible" in the Arrow station?
Kelvin's partner also created the invisible map in the Swan, so that tells me the duo definitely did not stay quarantined inside their hatch.
