quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, whose voice is the first to be heard?

Answer: Walt

The first sound to be distinguished is that of being underwater, followed by Sawyer emerging from the dark waves and becoming surrounded by blazing flames. Interlocking with the end of season one, where the scene had been left, Walt is heard shouting for Michael in the background.

In the frantic moments following, Michael is heard calling for Walt, Sawyer for Michael and Jin, and Jin for Sawyer (once). Sawyer paddles towards what remains of the raft- the only escape from the island- after the tragic explosion.
2. Locke mentioned that it has been exactly how many days since the crash of Flight 815?

Answer: 44 days

While the previous episode followed entry into the hatch from Jack's point of view, this episode shows Locke's perspective. (Notice the numerous rows of tally marks etched into the wall, depicting a long length of inhabitance.)Locke encountered Kate unconscious on the floor and was approached by Desmond, who asked if Locke was "him". Desmond's strange code question ("what did one snowman say to the other") defeated Locke's attempt to manipulate the situation. Locke told Desmond they had been on the island for 44 days, and managed to get Kate bound up instead of himself.

When asked what he was doing, Locke slipped his knife in her jeans and replied, "What's best for all of us".
3. In Michael's second flashback, Michael and Susan were at a meeting with their lawyers. What was the name of Susan's lawyer?

Answer: Lizzy

A closer look at the events of the custody battle over Walt are revealed through Michael's series of flashbacks in this episode. At this point, it had been about 14 months since Michael had last seen Walt and he was willing to do whatever necessary to stop Susan from leaving the country.

Unfortunately, Michael not only lost the battle for Walt those years ago, but also in the present when the boat of the "Others" had disappeared from sight.
4. In order to keep the truth behind the Virgin Mary statue a secret, Charlie "admits" to Claire that he is very religious.

Answer: False

The episode centered mainly between those stranded on the raft and those exploring the hatch, and therefore several main characters did not appear. A brief scene of the cave-dwelling survivors is shown which connects to the previous episode, when Jack tells Hurley he is going back to the hatch. Also in this scene, Charlie and Claire are seen by the campfire with Aaron. Claire discovers Charlie's statue of the Virgin Mary- recovered from the Beechcraft wreckage- which was secretly filled with heroin. Charlie denied that he was religious, but commented that the figure "might come in handy".
5. By what name did Sawyer refer sarcastically to the leader of the Others on the boat?

Answer: Bluebeard

After Michael was resuscitated by Sawyer, and both Sawyer and Michael exhausted their voices by shouting for their missing companions, a verbal battle between the two passed blame and accusation. Sawyer came to the realization that the Others had come from somewhere close, no more than 100 miles or so on the speedboat- such as the island. (He told Michael that "Bluebeard" blew them up because they wanted Walt.) After a series of broken rafts and the removal of the bullet from his own shoulder, Sawyer managed to out swim a bloodthirsty shark to a floating pontoon.

He and Michael seemed to have reconciled by the time the current carried them back--to the island. Interesting to note: Before their departure, as Walt questioned Michael about all of the bad things that could happen to them on the raft, he asked, "What if a shark attacks?" Not necessarily a premonition, although Walt is known to possess some type of "powers", but coincidence is rare on "Lost".
6. After escaping the ropes, Kate found herself inside a storage room filled with stockpiled jars and boxes of food. Before climbing up the ventilation ducts, she managed to find a box of candy bars. What was the brand name of the candy cars?

Answer: Apollo

Imagine her first taste of chocolate candy in 44 days! She even managed to take a few with her. Among other items on the pantry shelves nearby, were jars of apple sauce and apple cider. As for the "Apollo", it seems to be a discontinued candy bar by the Hershey company.

It may also be possible that Boone was eating the same type of candy bar (after offering it to Shannon, who refused) back in the first episode of season one. The relevance or significance (if any) may be to once again emphasize the amount of time Desmond has been separated from the outside world.
7. During their brief and tense conversation, Desmond asked Locke, "So the __________ is still out there?"

Answer: World

In their conversation, Locke revealed that 43 survivors remained (though that may now be questionable after the four rafters departed that morning). Once again the sickness is mentioned. Desmond made a very curious comment after hearing about the plane crash, asking almost in disbelief, "So the world is still out there?" It is a curious fact that the number "108", which resets the timer after the set of numbers is entered, is in fact the sum of all of the numbers. "108" also appears on Desmond's mural, along with a giant eye which may relate to Locke's description of the "mind's eye" and the "eye of the island". (Also note Locke's comment about "simulated sunlight" and the fact that the "108" on the mural appears in the middle of a sun.)
8. In Michael's third flashback, in which he and Susan speak privately about not wanting to go to court, Susan is seen standing near a large window when Michael enters. Which of the following is clearly seen on the sill just behind Susan?

Answer: A model ship

On the sill is a rather large model of a ship, along with a small box one side and a clock on the other. (Probably not a coincidental choice of decor.) In his last flashback Michael recalled the last time he saw young Walt before his son moved to Rome. In the park, Michael presented Walt with a stuffed animal- a polar bear!- to remember him by.
9. Did the sun rise in this episode?

Answer: Yes

This was undoubtedly the greatest length of time extended through various episodes thus far. The day began back in season one, with the journey to the Black Rock, the appearance of the tower smoke and the departure of the raft. Many sleepless hours and several explosions later, dawn finally broke on the horizon as Sawyer and Michael floated on the pontoon.

A distraught Michael vowed to get Walt back again. In the morning light the two realized that the current had taken them back to the island-- home.
10. Who is the first to reach the beach, Michael or Sawyer?

Answer: Sawyer

In the time it took Sawyer and Michael to survive the shark and float back to shore, collapsing on the beach, Jin had apparently been made prisoner and escaped. (A large gash on his left side suggested a fight.) Frantically, he gave the grim warning, "Others", which arrived too late.

The exhausted survivors now faced an even more dangerous encounter-- a tribe of weapon-bearing strangers, supposedly the "Others".
