Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many knives do we see Locke carrying in this episode?

Answer: 2

In the previous episode, we discovered what happened in the hatch from Jack's perspective; however, in this episode, we manage to see what happened in the structure from John Locke's perspective. This section of the episode begins immediately after Kate was abducted into the dark tunnel.

Realizing that there is indeed something inside the hatch, Locke decides to go into the structure as well. After getting to the bottom, he takes off his shoes (in order to make as less noise as possible) and ventures into the dark alleys. Eventually he finds Kate, who seems to be OK; but, as soon as he is going to give her a hand, he hears a gun sound, turns around and discover a man pointing a shotgun at him (That man being Desmond). Without delay, Desmond starts asking Locke whether he was "him". John obviously doesn't know what he is talking about but, thinking he may handle the situation, decides to responds with an affirmative answer. Kate's presence, however, makes Desmond a little doubtful about Locke's real identity, so he decides to ask him a riddle ("What did one snowman say to the other snowman?"). John couldn't answer the question and, realizing that Locke is not the person he is looking for, Desmond tells him to get rid of the knife he is carrying. After this, he takes both of them to another room, without knowing that the hunter is still holding one of his most beloved weapons.

NOTE: In episode 2:01: 'Man of Science, Man of Faith', Jack found a pair of shoes in the underground structure. In this episode, it is revealed that those shoes belonged to John Locke.
2. What nickname did Desmond use to name John Locke?

Answer: Box Man

After asking them some questions regarding their reason for being in the island, Desmond takes Kate and Locke to another section of the underground facility and, after refusing to answer a question related to the number of days he has been in the hatch, he gives Kate a rope and orders her to tie Locke up. John, however, tells him that he is going to tie up the wrong person, since Kate is a very dangerous fugitive, while he is only a regional collections manager for a cardboard manufacturer AKA a box company worker. Desmond quickly falls for this statement and decides to have Kate tied up instead of John. John, nevertheless, has a plan and, just before locking Kate up in a dark room, he slips his other knife in her jeans, giving her an opportunity to escape once things are normal again.

As for the answer, after hearing about Locke's job, Desmond starts calling him "box man", probably because he couldn't remember his real name or maybe just to make fun of him.
3. How many switches did Kate FIND in Desmond's storage room?

Answer: 2

Despite how dark the small room is, Kate manages to hold the knife John gave her and, after struggling for a few seconds, she cuts the ropes. Without losing any time, she stands up and, after finding a group of switches (2 exactly), she turns the lights on (only presses one).

However, what she sees goes beyond anything she could have expected. The room is filled with food supplies, all of them marked with a strange black and white symbol featuring the words DHARMA. It's unlikely, however, that Kate noticed that detail, since watching so much food in the same place and at the same time must have been quite shocking after 40 days of eating fruits and boar meat.
4. In Desmond's storage room, Kate finds plenty of food, including a box of candy bars. According to the label, what did the box under the candy box contained?

Answer: Crackers

Completely stunned by her new discovery, Kate starts looking at everything, but 2 things specifically attract her gaze: a vent, which may be her only way for escaping, and a box labeled "Candy", positioned over a box labeled "Crackers", containing plenty of Apollo Candy Bars.

After grabbing several of those bars, Kate uses a big box to help her climb up through the vent and, at last, manages to escape that small, but surprisingly good-looking, room.
5. Which of these people do NOT mention the word "raft" in this episode?

Answer: Kate

After locking Kate up in the storage room, Desmond takes Locke to another section, where he starts interrogating him. In this conversation, we can clearly appreciate two contrasting ways of behavior. Whereas Locke is completely calm and relaxed, Desmond looks very nervous and sort of paranoid. This chatting, however, is interrupted by a beeping sound (the same sound we heard in episode 2:01: 'Man of Science, Man of Faith'); a sound that clearly alters Desmond even more. Locke doesn't know what this means but he will soon find out that the sound might be the most important and difficult test for his so-called faith.

NOTE: The conversation between Locke and Desmond is one of the most important and revealing parts of this episode. Among the most important things discussed between these two are:

a) When Locke tells Desmond that they were traveling from Sidney to LA, the hatch occupant clearly looks surprised, stating that he didn't expect the world to be still out there.
b) Locke mentions the raft, a fact that makes Desmond laugh, probably since he considers that escaping the island using such way of transport was just silly.
c) The most important fact mentioned, definitely, is the sickness. Desmond asks John whether some of the survivors has gotten sick. Locke looks confused, but he now realizes why the words QUARANTINE are written in the inside of the hatch: Desmond is not meant to leave because there is some sort of sickness outside and, whatever it is, seems to be extremely hazardous.

NOTE: It should be made clear that the first time the sickness was mentioned was in episode 1:09: 'Solitary', when Rousseau tells Sayid that she saw herself forced to kill the other members of her group because they were "sick".
6. When Locke first saw the counter in the hatch, which numbers was it marking?

Answer: 2 38

After hearing the beeping, Desmond takes Locke to a computer room (One thing that should be stated is that there was a counter in the computer room; when Locke first saw it, it was marking 2 38, but it quickly moved to 2 37 and so on). When there, Desmond asks him if he knows how to use his computer. John tells him that he hasn't seen one of those in 20 years, but he does know how to use one. Desmond, then, orders him to type exactly what he says: 4 8 15 16 23 42. After this, he tells the hunter to press "Execute". At first, Locke is a little reluctant to obey, but he eventually does it. All of sudden, the counter resets to 108 00, making Desmond show a expression of relief. However, his expression soon changes, since he hears someone's voice: it's Jack, who entered the hatch in order to find Kate and Locke. After noticing Jack is carrying a gun, Desmond takes Locke to another section of the hatch, next to the computer room, so he can receive Jack in the proper manner.

From that moment on, the scenes are the same featured at the end of the previous episode, with one addition: we discover that the bullet Desmond shot in order to scare Jack hits the vent where Kate was hiding, a fact that makes us wonder whether Desmond knew Kate was there or if it was just mere coincidence.
7. How many times did Sawyer called Jin while adrift?

Answer: 5

Despite the importance of what happened on the hatch, this episode main focus is the fate of the "Rafters", who were left adrift in the middle of the sea after the unexpected arrival of the others, who abducted Walt and destroyed the survivors' main hope of being saved.

'Adrift' officially begins showing us Sawyer coming out from the water, and trying to find out whether his companions are fine. Eventually, he discovers Michael, who is desperately screaming for Walt, to the point that he is almost drowning. Sawyer quickly pushes a raft wreckage toward Michael and pulls him up; and, after performing CPR, he revives the unconscious parent. However, Michael is nowhere near worried about himself or his other two companions (Sawyer, who still has a bullet on his shoulder, and Jin, who seems to be gone) and keeps screaming for Walt, despite Sawyer's logic statements regarding how unlikely it is for Walt to be around. Michael eventually calms down, while Sawyer decides to scream for Jin. However, this is pointless, as Jin's possibility of being around seems to be as unlikely as Walt's. After a while, the Michael starts blaming Sawyer for what happened, since he states that the former confidence man made him fire the flare. Sawyer responds saying that Walt is probably fine, but the sarcasm of this comment upsets Michael, who orders Sawyer to get off his raft. But then, all of a sudden, the raft is hit by something from below and, from an underwater perspective, we see a shark swimming around the raft. It seems than apart from all the tragedies they have been through, these two survivors will have to face one last threat and, probably, the toughest one.

As for the answer, Sawyer called Jin one time while in the middle of the water and four other times when he was in the raft wreckage, just before the start of his argument with Michael and the arrival of the "underwater menace".
8. Which nickname did Sawyer use to name Michael in this episode?

Answer: Hoss

Once the underwater threat is gone, Sawyer takes out his gun and pulls the bullets out, ignoring Michael's commentaries about how useless that is, since he was underwater. However, before Sawyer can do anything else, the shark hits the raft again, and this time they do realize the identity of the creature. Michael, however, decides to takes this chance for blaming Sawyer of something else: attracting the shark due to his shoulder bleeding. This really upsets the man, who claims to have been shot for trying to protect Walt. But Michael's reply saying that the only reason he did that was to save himself made Sawyer decide to leave Michael's piece of raft and move onto another floating piece.

NOTE: Hoss, a nickname Sawyer used to name Michael in this scene, is a character from "Bonanza". Probably Sawyer called him this way because Hoss was also fiercely protective of someone: in his case, his younger brother, and in Michael's case, his son Walt.

NOTE: This episode reveals another effect of the mysterious powers Walt seems to possess. If we remember correctly, in episode 21: 'The Greater Good', Walt started asking Michael some questions regarding some problems with the raft, one of those questions being "What if a shark attacks us?". Probably, just like with the bird and the polar bear seen in episode 14: 'Special', Walt unintentionally attracted the creature and put his father and Sawyer's life in danger.
9. Which stage of the moon did Sawyer and Michael see while adrift?

Answer: Full Moon

While alone in his own piece of "raft", Sawyer decides to take the bullet out with his bare hands. Michael obviously thinks he is not going to be able to do that but, thanks to the light of the full moon, Sawyer fulfills his task, despite the pain and suffer he goes through for this dangerous but necessary procedure.

Meanwhile, in the island, Claire discovers the Virgin Mary statue Charlie found in episode 24: 'Exodus'. Knowing what it contains, Charlie is forced to lie to his friend, and he states that the object might come in handy in one way or another. Claire, however, ends up believing that Charlie is some sort of religious freak, despite the musician's denial of this statement.
10. According to Sawyer, what was the range of Walt's kidnappers' boat?

Answer: 100 miles

After recovering from his extremely painful experience, Sawyer starts a new discussion with Michael, saying that the flare wasn't the reason because Walt was kidnapped and the raft was destroyed. Then he explains how the "Others" boat was too small to be an open-sea boat. With a maximum range of 100 miles, the transport must have left from a nearby port - the island, for example. Then he remembers how Rousseau said that the "Others" were coming for a boy; obviously, Walt was the boy they were looking for. The last comment really affected Michael, since he doesn't want to believe that Walt's presence was the reason because they are adrift now, so he responds by splashing Sawyer's wreckage, which surprisingly falls apart, forcing him to climb on Michael's. Sawyer tries to continue talking, but Michael ends the conversation by saying him some very strong words: "You have no idea what it's like to care for somebody else".

NOTE: There is something very strange in this scene regarding the script; more exactly, Sawyer's phrase about the French woman saying that the "Others" were coming for the boy. If we remember correctly, Rousseau said this sentence at the end of episode 24: 'Exodus', after giving back Aaron to Charlie and Sayid, which means that those two were the only survivors aware of the "Others" real intentions. Sawyer only knew that the "Others" kidnapped Alex sixteen years ago and that they were coming back to kill them all. Of course, there is a chance that Sawyer's logic is really complex (so he could deduce this), but the phrase is most likely an script mistake.
11. Which part of the raft did Michael and Sawyer find last?

Answer: One of the pontoons

After a while, Sawyer turns around and he spots another part of the raft: one of the pontoons. Realizing this may be their only chance of surviving, Sawyer starts paddling, an action that makes a piece of the wreckage break apart, leaving Sawyer in the middle of the water. However, the man insists on reaching the pontoon, so he gives Michael the gun and tells him to shoot in case the shark shows up again. Eventually, the blood-thirsty creature appears ready to feast up with Sawyer but Michael, after a failed attempt to shoot which almost cost his partner's life, manages to hit the underwater monster, possibly killing it. Safe at last, Michael reaches the pontoon and helps Sawyer climb onto it. Now, the only thing they can do is waiting, and seeing where the current takes them.

NOTE: Across this episode, we saw many symbols in the hatch featuring the word DHARMA, making us believe that the name is related to some sort of company in charge of the hatch. Well, in this scene, a very similar symbol (featuring the same words but a different figure in the center) is seen in the shark's tail. Undoubtedly, that was one of the most shocking scenes in 'Adrift' and, despite how small our knowledge of DHARMA is, we can easily assume that its power over the island is very, very strong.
12. What is the last phrase we hear from Sawyer before him and Michael return to the island?

Answer: We are home

The sun finally arises, making Sawyer wake up, who discovers Michael crying. Sawyer ask him if he is all right, and the answer really surprises him: after a long all-night discussion, Michael had finally decided who had the fault of everything: himself. However, this makes him promise that, whatever happens, he will get back his son. After this, Sawyer spots something he never expected to see again: the island. Nonetheless, it seems that he had finally accepted that the island was probably not such a bad place, since his last words are: "We are home".

Eventually, they arrive to an unknown and seemingly deserted shore, probably hoping to reunite with his fellow survivors soon; however, these hopes are quickly shattered by the sudden arrival of Jin (How did he get to the shore?), who runs onto the beach speaking Korean and with his arms tied behind his back. His partners untie him, but they don't understand what he is saying, until it's too late: the last word Jin says is "Others", before a group of 5 strangers show up willing to get his prisoner back and, in the process, get two more.
13. Michael's flashback- During their first meeting, Michael's attorney calls him by the wrong surname. What was that wrong surname?

Answer: Dawn

Michael's flashbacks begin in an attorney's office, showing us an injured Michael (He was hit by a car, as seen in episode 14: 'Special') who is trying to find a way to stop his wife, Susan Lloyd, from taking his son away to Rome. Thanks to this meeting, the man discovers that Susan, and his husband Brian Porter, want him to relinquish his rights as Walt's father, meaning that their blood relationship will be the only thing left after this legal process. Michael, however, is not willing to let this happen and, despite the attorney's warnings regarding money issues, he decides to fight.

As for the answer, the attorney mistakenly called Michael Mr. Dawn (his real surname being Dawson), probably because he was not really interested or maybe just a reading misunderstanding.
14. Michael's flashback- How much time had passed since Michael last saw his son?

Answer: 14 months

The second flashback shows us the first legal confrontation between Michael and Susan, each of them represented by their lawyers (A woman named Lizzy being Susan's). Lizzy begins the process by asking Michael several questions regarding Walt, one of them being when was the last time Michael saw Walt (Michael answered saying one year, but Lizzy corrected him by saying that it has actually been 14 months).

Eventually, it is clearly appreciated that Michael barely knows anything about his son, so Lizzy asks him why he wants to retain his parental rights. The frustrated man replies with: "I am his father".
15. Michael's flashback- Which adjective did Susan Lloyd use to refer to Michael's talent as an artist?

Answer: Rare

The second legal confrontation between these two takes a different turn, as Susan shows up completely alone and asks Michael if they can speak privately. The man agrees and Susan, very smartly, starts by telling him that the odds indicate that he will be the winner if they take this problem to court. But then, the woman indicates that she will be able to give Walt anything he needs, while Michael still needs to recover from his accident. She advises him to regain his health and economic stability so he can pursuit his "rare talent as an artist", as said by Susan. Michael seems to understand this and, despite we do not see him signing the papers, it is obvious that he does it.

Michael's flashbacks end with a last meeting with Susan and his son Walt. After giving him a present (curiously, a stuffed polar bear) he tells him that no matter what happens, he will always love him. After this, he watches his son walking away, with no expectations of seeing him again. Faith, however, had thought him that sometimes you can reunite with those you love, despite the small probabilities and, if that happened before, it can surely happen again.
