Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Everyone at the 4077th called him 'Radar' because he seemed to have the extraordinary ability to both read people's minds and anticipate future events. But what was the given birthname of Corporal Radar O'Reilly?

Answer: Walter

His real name is Walter, something he mentions to Captain Chandler (aka Jesus Christ) in the episode 'Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?' Incidentally, his middle name is Eugene.
2. Despite the fact that he was much older in real life than the Radar character, what actor lent his expertise to the part of Radar O'Reilly?

Answer: Gary Burghoff

While Radar was supposed to be hovering around 18-years old, Gary Burghoff was already 29-years old when the TV series began in 1972. Gary Burghoff is the only actor to reprise the role of a significant character from the original 1970 movie 'MASH'.
3. Radar often talked of his home town of Ottumwa, a sleepy rural community in the southeast corner of what U.S. state known for its agriculture?

Answer: Iowa

For such a small town, Ottumwa has had its share of famous residents. Tom Arnold was born there, as was astronaut Steve Bales. Edna Ferber grew up there, and Richard Nixon was once stationed in that tiny Iowa town.
4. Though he was essentially a corporal during his entire run of the series, in one episode Radar makes a leap up to a higher rank. What rank was this?

Answer: 2nd lieutenant

In the episode 'Lt. Radar O'Reilly', Radar is bumped up to commissioned officer status, thanks to Hawkeye and BJ. Life as an officer doesn't turn out to be as good as expected, however, and Radar ends up returning to corporal status. Also, in the episode 'Welcome to Korea', Radar briefly enjoyed the status of 'corporal captain', but that's another story.
5. In one episode, the actor who played Radar also played Radar's ma in a home movie.

Answer: True

In the fourth season episode 'Mail Call, Again', Gary Burghoff not only plays Radar, but also Radar's mother in a movie sent from home. Besides Harry Morgan, he is the only major actor on the show to have played more than one role (Harry Morgan played General Steele prior to becoming Colonel Potter).
6. Radar O'Reilly was known to take a sip of the 'drink' now and then, but his drink was non-alcoholic. What popular drink was undoubtedly Radar's favorite?

Answer: Grape Nehi

Radar was often seen drinking Grape Nehi during the run of the series. On occasion, Radar would also become intoxicated on alcoholic beverages, but this was a relative rarity and usually only used for comic purposes. Incidentally, Nehi came in many other flavors, including lemonade, strawberry, fruit punch and blueberry.
7. In an early episode of 'M*A*S*H', Radar admitted to having an imaginary friend while growing up. The unusual thing was that this friend was a girl. What was her name, according to Radar?

Answer: Shirley

Radar's admission of having an imaginary friend came in the season one episode 'Tuttle'. When Trapper asked what Radar's imaginary friend Shirley looked like, Radar responded, 'Like me, only with tiny little Breasts.' Following this, he is ejected from the Swamp!
8. Radar often spoke fondly of various members of his family. In particular, he had an uncle who helped tremendously at his family's farm. What was this uncle's name?

Answer: Ed

Sadly, we discovered that Radar's Uncle Ed passed away in the episode 'Goodbye, Radar', prompting the army to send Radar home on a hardship discharge. It always chokes me up to watch this episode, especially when Colonel Potter says goodbye to the lad.
9. Radar may have left the show early, but his memory was never forgotten. In fact, in the second to last episode of the show entitled 'As Time Goes By', what item of Radar's was placed in the time capsule that the personnel at the 4077th bury?

Answer: Teddy bear

Radar's teddy bear is among several very nostalgic items to be placed in the time capsule, with some other objects including a piece of fishing tackle that belonged to Henry, a broken belt from a chopper engine and bottle of Charles' best cognac.
10. During what season of 'M*A*S*H' did Radar make his big departure in a two-part episode called 'Goodbye, Radar'?

Answer: Eight

The two-part episode 'Goodbye, Radar' aired on October 8 and October 15, 1979. Klinger essentially took over for Radar as company clerk. Gary Burghoff would later appear as Radar (or, rather, Walter) in two spinoffs, one being a TV pilot called 'W*A*L*T*E*R' and the other the series 'AfterM*A*S*H', in which he appeared for two episodes.
