Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of my favorite 'M*A*S*H' characters, and among the greatest authority figures ever portrayed in a TV series, Sherman T. Potter was both a good leader and a caring fatherly figure. Do we ever learn what the 'T' stands for in his name during any episode?

Answer: No

Indeed, what the 'T' stands for is still a mystery, though there has been a lot of speculation. It would make sense that the 'T' stands for 'Tecumseh', since he was named after the Civil War general William Tecumseh Sherman, but this is never revealed.
2. What terrific actor brought the character Colonel Sherman T. Potter to life on the small screen?

Answer: Harry Morgan

Harry Morgan, veteran of both the big screen and small screen, took the role of Sherman Potter beginning in 1975. Before that, he had made a career playing significant roles in such films as 'The Ox-Bow Incident', 'Inherit the Wind' and 'How the West Was Won', along with appearing in TV shows such as 'Dragnet'.
3. Colonel Potter was very much in love with his wife, and mentioned her name often during the run of the show. What was Potter's beloved wife's name?

Answer: Mildred

Mildred never appears live in the TV series 'M*A*S*H', but she was seen several times in the follow-up series 'After MASH', played by different actresses both times, namely Anne Pitoniak and Barbara Townsend. Her picture was often seen on Colonel Potter's desk as well.
4. Colonel Potter is very proud to call Missouri his home state. He's even more proud to call what small Missouri town his home town?

Answer: Hannibal

Hannibal, Missouri, made famous by Mark Twain, who featured his boyhood hometown in his books 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and 'Huckleberry Finn'. Oddly enough, prior to establishing Missouri as the home of Colonel Potter, he mentions something about living in Nebraska.
5. Along with his wife, Sherman Potter is very proud of the rest of his family, and mentions a number of family members during the show. What was Colonel Potter's daughter's name?

Answer: Evy

Evy has a child, and is married to a man named Bob Wilson, who we actually get to meet in the eleventh season episode 'Strange Bedfellows'. He is played by Dennis Dugan. This is the only Potter family member who shows up live during the run of 'M*A*S*H'. Colonel Potter also has a son, but we never learn his name. We do, however, learn that his daughter-in-law's name is Jeanine.
6. Colonel Potter appeared on 'M*A*S*H' for a total of eight seasons.

Answer: True

Indeed, Colonel Potter first showed up in the fourth season, and stayed until the final season, the eleventh for the show. His first full episode was called 'Change of Command', though we get a brief glimpse of him in the episode just prior, namely 'Welcome to Korea'. Harry Morgan also showed up as a completely different character, a certain General Steele, in the third season episode 'The General Flipped at Dawn'.
7. Colonel Potter served in the U.S. Army during World War II, but not World War I.

Answer: False

In World War I, he enlisted in the army, though he claimed that he was underage. He served in the cavalry during that war. During World War II, he was already at work as a doctor.
8. Colonel Potter loved no other animal better than a horse. What was the name of the Colonel's beloved horse, first appearing in the episode 'Dear Mildred' in season four?

Answer: Sophie

The beautiful Sophie was given to Colonel Potter by Radar, who with the help of Hawkeye and BJ had rescued the poor, abandoned beast. Sophie was originally referred to as a male horse.
9. Which of these is not a true statement about Colonel Potter, based on his claims during the run of the show?

Answer: He fought in the Battle of Gallipoli

Colonel Potter's age is problematic. Though he claimed to be 62 in the episode 'Pressure Points', this conflicts with other claims he made in different episodes. In one episode, he suggests that he enlisted early in the army so he could be in the cavalry during World War I, but if he was really 62 he would have been around 25 when World War I started. Ah well, no matter, 62 sounds like a good age!
10. How did Colonel Potter leave the 4077th in the very last episode, namely 'Goodbye, Farewell and Amen'?

Answer: On his horse

Colonel Potter left his horse Sophie in Korea before returning to the states, but not before giving her one last ride out of the 4077th, the fitting end to his grand command and an eight year tour-of-duty on the best TV show of all time!
