Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode, the twelve competing designers were flown to what international fashion city?

Answer: Paris

Although the twelve designers picked out for "Making the Cut" were vetted and flown to New York City to be introduced to Heidi and Tim, the visit was a short one; they were immediately put back onto planes and flown to Paris to set up shop in an atelier design studio. For their first challenge, each designer had to create two looks-- one marketable and accessible and one made for the runway-- and have them presented on the catwalk in front of the Eiffel Tower during a massive fashion show. After this show, Jasmine was the first designer sent packing.
2. For their second challenge, the designers were asked to create which style of clothing?

Answer: Haute couture

Continuing to work in Paris, the designers were given time and inspiration to create haute couture looks befitting their environment in the fashion capital and, at the end of several days, they would present two looks at the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs.

The challenge still needed to feature an accessible look as well as one that was runway-ready. Esther ended up walking away with a second challenge win in a row (though Ji Won had her accessible garment made available on Amazon) while Martha was told she wasn't making the cut.
3. In episode three, the designers heard out two potential contestants who were primed to be eliminated. Did both Troy and Joshua get sent home?

Answer: No

During week three, the designers had to make collaborative garments-- two runway pieces and one accessible look-- to be presented during a show along the River Seine. Tim and Heidi paired the designers to take advantage of everyone's unique aesthetics, but it turned out to be a flop for Troy and Joshua, the latter of whom walked out of the competition during the judging session.

The catch with the show is that the designers are expected to treat it as a pitch for their growing brands, so when told they aren't 'making the cut', they're given the opportunity to try and convince the judges that they should continue competing. Troy was the first and only designer to succeed, saving his spot in the show.

He was eliminated in episode four.
4. How long do the designers have to create looks from scratch for their fourth challenge?

Answer: Seven hours

The judges, fearing complacency in the designers at this point in the competition, decided to intensify the process by making a bit of a rush challenge. Using materials they've already purchased for their previous looks, the designers needed to create a garment in seven hours; their fashion show would be that evening in the design studio.

They would get no seamstresses for this challenge, meaning they had to sew everything by hand, themselves. This time, both Will and Troy were sent home.
5. In the fifth week of the competition, the designers flew to what new fashion city to compete?

Answer: Tokyo

Leaving Paris, the remaining seven designers were flown to Tokyo, Japan to continue their brand-building and, upon arrival, they were tasked with creating two looks for a streetwear mini-collection, presenting them on an escalator runway in the middle of the city.

The winner would be able to create a co-branded look with Puma Japan if they won. Ultimately, this prize was awarded to Rinat, who made the strongest accessible look, and Sabato was eliminated for not making the cut, having left out a dress that Tim felt was the strongest look of the bunch.
6. In episodes six, the designers had to create looks for a digital fashion show. What animated avatar was featured as an audience member during this event?

Answer: Noonoouri

For the sixth challenge, the final six designers had to design two looks inspired by opposing forces that could mesh with a CGI background designed for them to use at a digital fashion show at the Amazon Fashion Studios in Tokyo, Japan. The winning look would be modelled by virtual fashionista Noonoouri on Instagram (and she would make an appearance in the crowd as well). Previously thought to be a high-concept designer, Sander won with his re-invented t-shirt look. Though Naomi Campbell fought for Rinat to stay in the competition, the majority of judges felt her looks didn't make the cut and she was sent packing.
7. The fashion show in episode seven was accompanied by what other challenge for the designers?

Answer: A photo shoot

The seventh challenge of the competition brought the final five designers to the Edo Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum, the site of both their fashion shows and a photo shoot needed to accompany their two garments, both of which needed to reflect their styles and their environments. Over the course of three days they needed the typical accessible look to be sellable on Amazon and the high fashion runway look.

This round, Ji Won was eliminated for her unimaginative garments and poor execution in her photo shoot.
8. The final four presented their evolved looks on a runway on which of the following?

Answer: A boat

After meeting with Tim and Heidi in a Tokyo teahouse, the final four were presented with their penultimate assignment highlighting brand growth and evolution. They needed to create two to four looks for the runway, one of which needed to be accessible (for Amazon) and to do so they would be allowed to manage a team of two seamstresses in-studio for the duration.

The show would ultimately be held on a boat in Tokyo Harbour, and after this, Megan was sent home unable to make the cut. It left a final three to proceed to a massive month-long final challenge.
9. How many designers were able to make a pop-up shop in the final stage of the competition?

Answer: Three

For their final string of challenges, the final three were told that they would be heading home for a month to create a pop-up shop's worth of looks. These looks would be sold to the public in New York City and, from their garments, they would need to hold a twelve-to-fourteen look fashion show on a city rooftop.

The catch was that only two would proceed to the fashion show, and before that they'd need to present a business plan and pitch for their one million dollar prize. If they could perfect their visual merchandising, their space, and the art of customer seduction, they could make the final two.

Although all three did well, Sander was eliminated before the pitches.
10. Which designer won "Making the Cut" Season 1?

Answer: Jonny

After presenting their pitches to the President of Amazon Fashion, Christine Beauchamp, Esther and Jonny put together their final runway show to be presented atop the Hudson Mercantile Rooftop in New York City. After parading their garments to an audience of fashion icons, fellow competitors, and family members, Jonny Cota received the mentorship from Amazon Fashion including a full collection on Amazon and a $1,000,000 business deal to grow his brand.
