Zac was actually born a merman. This is revealed in season 2. A spell was placed on him by his birth mother (a mermaid) to prevent him from getting a tail. The spell was broken by his fall into the moon pool during a full moon.

Nixie, Sirena, and Lyla were in the moon pool when Zac first fell in, and they spent the season trying to turn him back into a "land boy." Rikki is from "H2O: Just Add Water", the prequel to "Mako Mermaids" and made a guest appearance at the end of the series.

Evie and Zac have been friends since childhood, and they were dating by the beginning of the series.

Answer: She gets trapped in water-filled cave on Mako and Zac rescues her

Cam tricked Evie into accompanying him to Mako where she became trapped in an endless chamber filled with water. The air in her tank was running low and she was losing consciousness. Zac exposed his secret in order to save her.

Evie tried to save Zac from the mermaids who were trying to turn Zac back into a "land boy" and ended up in the moon pool during the full moon. The next day she took a shower and was fine, but when she wet her hand with a hose she grew a tail.

All of the mermaids go to school in the pod to learn to control their abilities. Once they have mastered them to a certain degree, they are given a moon ring which holds the power of the full moon and can increase the power of their spells. Evie became the first "land girl" to receive a moon ring.

When Mimmi arrives in season 2, Mimmi and Zac begin sharing visions. Neither tell the other until Zac saves Mimmi from David's brother. Rita claims to not know why only they share visions. However, in a later episode it is revealed that Mimmi and Zac share a mother and the fact that they are indeed siblings is proven by the fact that they share visions, "a connection made possible only through blood." - Rita

Answer: Nerissa

Nerissa was know as the most powerful mermaid in history. She was the only one powerful enough to cast a spell to prevent Zac from getting a tail. She left Mimmi with the Southern Pod and Zac on land to protect them because she needed to fight a powerful evil mermaid Aurora and did not know if she would ever see them again. "It was the hardest thing [she has] ever done." -Nerissa

Answer: Evie

Zac lured the water dragon into the moon pool with a plan to defeat it, but Evie found out and went to stop him. She was too late and the water dragon arrived while she was in the moon pool. Zac proceeded with his plan but when it did not seem to be working, Evie swam in front of Zac, yelling at the water dragon to leave Zac alone.

She was then hit by the breath of the water dragon and immediately became human and was not able to get her tail back.
