Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Salingers
Answer: Party of Five
The lives of the Salinger children -- all five -- were forever changed when their parents were killed in a car accident in "Party of Five." In order to stay together, the eldest, 24-year-old Charlie, took on the role of guardian. The youngest, Owen, was just a baby.
Although the show was set in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, it was filmed primarily in studios in Culver City in southern California.
2. Crawleys
Answer: Downton Abbey
"Downton Abbey" portrayed the lives of the Crawleys, a titled British family whose bleak economic fortunes are greatly improved when the heir, Robert, marries Cora, an American dry goods heiress. Other important relatives include Robert's mother, and Robert and Cora's daughters, Mary, Edith, and Sybil.
The highly-acclaimed show, which premiered on ITV in 2010, earned high praise and many awards.
3. Lawrences
Answer: Family
"Family" ran on ABC from 1976 to 1980. It followed the members of the Lawrence family, including parents Kate and Doug, and their three children, Nancy, Willie, and Buddy. Buddy was played by Kristy McNichol, who was 14 when the show started. Kristy and her brother Jimmy McNichol were teenage stars.
4. Arnolds
Answer: The Wonder Years
"The Wonder Years" depicted American family life during a time of cultural change, the late 1960s and early 1970s. The central character was Kevin Arnold, who was 12 years old when the pilot aired. His older sister's burgeoning free spirit clashed with their father's conservative nature, putting their reflective and sympathetic mother in the middle. Kevin endured quite a bit of teasing from his older brother, Wayne.
His best friend was Paul, and his sweetheart crush was Winnie, the girl next door.
5. Scotts
Answer: One Tree Hill
Nathan Scott was the star of the high school basketball team when his half-brother Lucas joined, creating a rivalry. They had a complicated relationship, as their father left Lucas's mother to marry Nathan's. As the show progressed, the brothers bonded, and new storylines brought in new characters. The show and cast won multiple Teen Choice Awards.
6. Bravermans
Answer: Parenthood
The Bravermans consisted of Camille and Zeke Braverman, their four adult children, and multiple grandchildren. In the pilot, the second oldest child, Sarah, returned to Berkeley to move in with her parents along with her two teenagers after a divorce.
The show was based on a 1989 movie of the same name. "Parenthood" ran on NBC from 2000 to 2014. Another version was launched in Italy in 2015 with a family named Ferraro.
7. Fishers
Answer: Six Feet Under
The Fishers were a quirky but ultimately loving family in HBO's "Six Feet Under." In the pilot, the eldest child returned home for a visit, and ended up staying to help run the family mortuary business. The storylines followed him as well as his brother, sister, and mother, and all of their personal lives.
It was a highly acclaimed show that earned over 45 major awards and 165 nominations.
8. Jennings
Answer: The Americans
This is a slightly tricky answer, as Elizabeth and Philip Jennings of "The Americans" were actually Russian-born spies named Nadezhda and Mischa. Set in the 1980s, the Jennings ran a travel agency overtly and carried out missions for their Soviet homeland covertly.
The stakes went way up when they learned their new neighbor was an F.B.I. agent in counterintelligence unit. When the show opened, both of the Jennings children were unaware of their parents' true identities.
9. Whites
Answer: Breaking Bad
"Breaking Bad" may not be a family-friendly show, but the Whites almost always had breakfast together and stayed together as a family for a long time. Walter White was a chemistry teacher who used his scientific and tactical brilliance to create a meth empire. Skylar White, Walter's wife, was the moral counterpoint to Walt's increasingly violent behavior, though he never wanted to be with anyone else.
Their son, Walter Jr., and their infant daughter, Holly, kept them together for a long time - for better or for worse.
10. Henricksons
Answer: Big Love
Bill Henrickson of "Big Love" was raised as a fundamentalist Mormon and became a polygamist when he received an epiphany that he should. The family included Barb, his first and only legal wife, with whom he had three children; his second wife, Nicki, and their two sons; and Margie, his third wife, and their three children.
He had a respectful relationship with Barb, a somewhat contentious one with Nicki, and a more sensual one with Margie. Bill also had to deal with his difficult blood family, underhanded going-ons at his childhood compound, and his business as owner of a major hardware store.
