Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Advises Jon Snow to get a new cloak, signifying his siding with the Wildlings

Answer: Mance Rayder

Mance Rayder is known as the King-Beyond-the-Wall. In the first two seasons, we had only heard of him, but never seen his face. In the first episode of season 3, Jon Snow is brought before him. Mance asks Jon why he wants to turn his cloak and fight for the Wildlings, thinking that Jon desires glory.

After Jon tells him that he wants to fight for the side that fights for the living, he is convinced. Later he surveys the Fist of the First Men, where the Night's Watch recruits led by Lord Commander Mormont had been slaughtered by the White Walkers. Upon seeing it, Mance realizes that the Night's Watch has been severely depleted and is lacking manpower.

He orders his lieutenant, Tormund Giantsbane, to take a band of twenty men and Jon Snow and to attack Castle Black from the south, at the time he himself will attack them from the north.

He boasts that his signal for the attack will be the biggest fire the North has ever seen.
2. Leads the Bolton detachment that captures Jaime Lannister and Brienne of Tarth

Answer: Locke

Locke is a man-at-arms serving House Bolton. In the first episode of season 3, Roose Bolton says that he has sent his best hunter in pursuit of Jaime Lannister, obviously referring to Locke. At the end of the second episode, Locke captures Jaime. Jaime attempts to bribe him, telling him that his father, Tywin, will reward him very generously if he returns his son to him, but Locke is afraid of what Robb Stark might do to him, if he strikes such a deal with a Lannister. En route to Harrenhal, some of Locke's men attempt to rape Brienne, but Jaime talks Locke into stopping them. Emboldened by his success, Jaime tries again to bribe him, but fails miserably, losing his sword hand in the process.

When Locke arrives to Harrenhal, Roose Bolton is appalled by Jaime's sorry state and, to Locke's dismay, sends Jaime off to King's Landing, accompanied by Steelshanks Walton. Later, after Lord Bolton has left Harrenhal, Locke receives an offer of 300 golden dragons from Lord Selwyn Tarth as a ransom for Brienne, which he chooses to ignore, throwing Brienne in the bear pit of Harrenhal. Unfortunately for him, Jaime comes back and saves Brienne.
3. Thwarts Robb Stark's war plans by winning the Battle of Stone Mill

Answer: Edmure Tully

Edmure is the son of Lord Hoster Tully and the little brother of Lady Catelyn Stark. He is first mentioned in the second episode of season 3, when Robb Stark decides to march to Riverrun for the funeral of his grandfather, Hoster Tully, something Lord Rickard Karstark opposes, stating it is a distraction from the war.

At Lord Hoster's funeral, Edmure tries three times to set aflame the funeral boat, according to the Tully customs of burial, but all three arrows of his miss their target. Edmure's uncle, Brynden "Blackfish" Tully needs only one arrow to accomplish the thing Edmure botched. Later, both Brynden and Robb Stark scold Edmure for his actions at Stone Mill, stating that he should have left the Lannisters have the mill and wait for their forces to come to him. Later, Robb tells Edmure that he will marry a daughter of Lord Walder Frey, in order to reforge the alliance between the King in the North and the Lord of the Crossing. Edmure agrees and chooses Roslin Frey as his bride. At the final stages of the wedding ceremony, the Freys and Boltons turn on their former allies, and Robb Stark is killed, alongside his mother, his direwolf and many of his generals. Edmure is subsequently taken prisoner.
4. Strikes a deal with Daenerys Targaryen concerning the Unsullied

Answer: Kraznys mo Nakloz

Kraznys mo Nakloz is a member of the ruling council of Astapor and the master of the Unsullied, the elite slave-soldiers of the city. We first see Kraznys in the first episode of season 3, when Daenerys Targaryen goes to him to purchase the Unsullied. Kraznys informs her of the Unsullied's prowess in the battlefield, stating that they fear neither death nor pain. During his conversation with Daenerys, Kraznys is rude and disrespectful and his slave girl Missandei clean up his insult-laden phrases. Later, he and Daenerys agree that he will give her the Unsullied, provided she gives him one of her dragons. Daenerys agrees but, upon completing the purchase, orders the Unsullied to slay all the Masters and everyone holding a whip. Kraznysin turn orders the Unsullied to kill Daenerys, but they no longer obey him. Daenerys stares at him and says one word: "dracarys".

Therefore, her dragon sets Kraznys on fire, killing him.
5. Faces Sandor Clegane in a trial by combat

Answer: Beric Dondarrion

We had first seen Beric in season 1. When Eddard Stark had learned of the atrocities Gregor Clegane committed in the Riverlands, he commissioned Beric to bring the false knight to justice. In season 3, we learn that, after suffering a defeat in the hands of Gregor Clegane, Beric and what remained of his band formed the Brotherhood Without Banners, which continues to fight the Lannisters in the war-torn Riverlands.

When Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane are captured by the Brotherhood, they are brought to Beric's headquarters, Hollow Hill. Beric decides to fight Clegane in a trial by combat, but is defeated.

The red priest Thoros bring him back, however. He is later visited by the red priestess Melisandre and agrees to give her Gendry. Arya is clearly shocked by that and abandons the Brotherhood, while the names of both Beric and Thoros are included in her list of people she wishes dead.
6. A red priest and member of the Brotherhood Without Banners, hands over Gendry to his fellow red priestess Melisandre

Answer: Thoros of Myr

Although the first time we see Thoros of Myr is in season 3, we had first heard of him in season 1, when Jory Cassel and Jaime Lannister reminisced of the Siege of Pyke and how Thoros leaped over the walls with his flaming sword, terrifying the Ironborn.

In season 3, Thoros is first seen with a group of his men from the Brotherhood Without Banners and finds Arya Stark with two of her friends, Gendry and Hot Pie in the woods, after their escape from Harrenhal. Thoros brings her before Beric Dondarrion, the leader of the group.

They decide to give Arya to her brother, Robb, the King in the North, for ransom. Some time later, the Brotherhood is visited by Melisandre, who is looking for any one of Robert Baratheon's illegitimate children that survived the purge initiated by King Joffrey.

She is shocked when she sees Thoros among the other outlaws and rebuffs him for failing to convert Robert Baratheon to the faith of the Lord of Light. Thoros agrees to give her Gendry. Arya Stark is clearly appalled by that and, when the Brotherhood leaves their shelter to ambush some Lannister men, she escapes.

In season 4, we learn that she has put both Thoros and Beric in her "death list".
7. A former maester, is send off with Jaime Lannister to King's Landing from Harrenhal

Answer: Qyburn

The first time we see Qyburn is at the liberation of Harrenhal by Robb Stark. Qyburn, for reasons untold, ended up as one of the Northern and Riverlander prisoners held by Gregor Clegane. Somehow he managed to survive his captivity, despite the fact that, when Clegane abandoned Harrenhal, he had the prisoners put to the sword. Later, when Jaime Lannister is brought to Harrenhal, Qyburn tends to his wounds.

When Jaime is well enough to travel, Lord Roose Bolton lets him go to King's Landing, having struck a deal with Jaime's father, Lord Tywin Lannister, and betrayed the northern cause. Qyburn accompanies Jaime and continues treating him. Jaime is told by Qyburn that he was once a maester, but the Citadel took the chain from him, becuase of his tendency to experiment on living humans and that he hopes that Lord Tywin will give his status as a maester back to him, if he is satisfied with his treatment of Jaime.
8. Turns the Second Sons to the service of Daenerys Targaryen

Answer: Daario Naharis

Daario Naharis is a Tyroshi sellsword serving with the Second Sons. After the Sack of Astapor, Daenerys Targaryen marches against another slave city, Yunkai. The Second Sons are initially approached by Yunkai. Daenerys asks for an audition with the leaders of the sellsword company, Mero and Prendahl na Ghezn.

When they go to her tent, they bring Naharis with them. Mero and Prendahl are confident that they can beat Daenerys' Unsullied and Naharis notes that she has no cavalry. However, when the three of them meet privately, they agree that force alone is not enough to defeat Daenerys, so one of them must go and assassinate her in her tent.

After drawing lots, Naharis is commissioned to complete the task. Naharis manages to disguise as an Unsullied and enters Daenerys' tent, but then reveals that he has disposed of his captains and that he is now the leader of the Second Sons, before offering his sword to Daenerys. Later, Daario, Jorah Mormont and the leader of the Unsullied, Grey Worm, infiltrate Yunkai and initiate a slave uprising, surprising the defenders and managing to seize the city. Daario gives Daenerys Yunkai's flag.
9. Kills Robb Stark during the infamous Red Wedding

Answer: Roose Bolton

We had first seen Roose in season 2, as one of Robb Stark's generals. He helped Robb win a stunning victory at the Battle of the Oxcross. Later, when the Ironborn under Theon Greyjoy occupied Winterfell, Roose sent his natural son, Ramsay Snow, to retake the castle. Ramsay, however, goes on and puts Winterfell to the torch, after having all the Ironborn killed, apart from Theon Greyjoy, whom he takes captive. Meanwhile, he spreads false information that it was the Ironborn who destroyed Winterfell and that Theon is still on the loose.

In season 3, Roose Bolton accompanies Robb when he liberates Harrenhal. When Robb and the bulk of his forces go to Riverrun for the funeral of Lord Hoster Tully, Roose is charged with holding Harrenhal. Later, his man-at-arms Locke brings in the captured Jaime Lannister. Jaime asks Roose to let him go to King's Landing, reminding him that Tywin Lannister is a dangerous man to cross. Roose finally relents, having decided to betray Robb.

He then leaves Locke to hold Harrenhal and goes to the Twins for the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey.

At the final stages of the wedding, the Boltons and Freys turn on their former allies and Roose kills Robb personally. On the next day, he and Walder Frey gloat over the demise of the Starks. As a reward for his treachery, Roose is named as Warden of the North by Tywin Lannister.
10. After being shown the letter from the Night's Watch, decides to turn his attention to the North

Answer: Stannis Baratheon

At the beginning of season 3, Stannis Baratheon has become withdrawn and depressed, due to his defeat at the Battle of the Blackwater, which we saw in season 2. He refuses to see anyone, apart from the red priestess Melisandre. When his adviser and friend Davos Seaworth returns to Dragonstone, Stannis shows indifference. Stannis confesses to Melisandre that he fears that his enemies are mocking him, but she replies that he will triumph at the end.

She then goes to the Riverlands, in order to find one of Robert Baratheon's natural-born children that are still alive, after King Joffrey's attempt to eliminate them.

After she leaves, Stannis visits his wife, Selyse and his daughter, Shireen. When Melisandre returns with Gendry, Stannis goes to consult with Davos, who is very skeptical of the red woman's power and good intentions. Davos tells Stannis that they both know that sacrificing Gendry is utterly wrong.

When they enter Gendry's quarters, Melisandre presents them with three leeches she had placed on Gendry's body. Melisandre throws them into the fire and Stannis says the names of the three other claimant kings, who he desires dead. Later, when Robb Stark is assassinated, Melisandre insists that her spell was successful. Before Stannis can give Gendry to Melisandre, however, Davos smuggles him out of Dragonstone, something which Stannis considers a betrayal. Davos shows his king the letter from the Night's Watch requesting aid. Since both his advisors, Davos and Melisandre, agree that the war in the North is far more important that the War of the Five Kings, decides to aid the black brothers, the only one of the claimant kings to do so.
