Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Has Eddard Stark's greatsword melted and the steel used for the forging of two swords

Answer: Tywin Lannister

Tywin is the stern patriarch of the Lannister family and the father of Cersei, Jaime and Tyrion. At the beginning of season 4 and after the victory against House Stark (which was accomplished due to treachery), Tywin has Ice, the ancestral Valyrian steel Stark sword melted and the steel is used to forge two swords. Tywin gives one of them to his son Jaime, hoping that Jaime will resign his post in the Kingsguard and will become his father's heir to Casterly Rock, but Jaime refuses to consider that option. Later, Tywin is confronted by Oberyn Martell, who despises the Lannisters, because his sister and her children had been murdered by Tywin's bannerman, Gregor Clegane, on Tywin's orders.

When his grandson, Joffrey, is poisoned at his wedding, Tywin's dwarf son, Tyrion, is suspected, although he is innocent. Having harbored a hatred for his dwarf son, Tywin is determined to see Tyrion found guilty.

In the trial, everything seems to be going well for Tywin, but in a dramatic outburst Tyrion exclaims that he is in fact tried for being a dwarf from the very day of his birth and demands a trial by combat. Oberyn Martell later volunteers to be his champion.

When the trial by combat starts, Oberyn manages to mortally wound Tywin's champion, Gregor Clegane, but Clegane still manages to throw Oberyn to the ground and kill him. Tywin sentences his son to death. The night before Tyrion's scheduled execution, Jaime frees his brother from his cell and allows him to escape. Tyrion's way to freedom leads him to Tywin's chambers. The two Lannisters, father and son, confront each other, with Tywin saying he always wanted Tyrion dead and calling Tyrion's lover, Shae, a "whore". Despite Tyrion's warning not to use that word again, Tywin again calls Shae this way. Tyrion shoots him with a crossbow and Tywin, even in his final moments, hurts his son's feelings again, saying "you are no son of mine". Tyrion shoots him a second time, killing him.
2. Is sent by Roose Bolton to infiltrate the Night's Watch and find the two youngest Stark children

Answer: Locke

We had first seen Locke in season 3, when Roose Bolton had sent him to capture Jaime Lannister. Locke is described by Bolton as his best hunter. When Roose Bolton's son, Ramsay (with whom Locke has developed a friendship), informs his father that Bran and Rickon Stark are alive and assumes they are probably sheltered by their half-brother, Jon Snow, at Castle Black, Locke is tasked by Roose to find them, being promised 1000 acres of land and a holdfast if he succeeds. Locke infiltrates the Night's Watch and impresses many people at Castle Black with his skills in combat.

When Jon Snow asks for volunteers to help him subdue the mutineers at Craster's Keep, Locke is among those who respond to his call. Jon sends Locke to scout the area and inform him on the actions of the mutineers.

While scouting, Locke tracks down Bran Stark, who had been captured by the mutineers, but tells Jon that the hut in which they are kept has hounds within, so that Jon or any of his companions do not go close to it. During the battle, Locke goes to the hut and attempts to abduct Bran, but his neck is snapped by a warged Hodor and he is killed.
3. Smuggles Sansa Stark out of King's Landing after Joffrey's death

Answer: Dontos Hollard

Dontos Hollard was introduced as a character in season 2, when he was one of the knights to participate in the joust thrown in at Joffrey Baratheon's name day. Dontos appeared for his jousting drunk and Joffrey, irked, ordered his men to drown him in a barrel of wine, but Sansa Stark stops him and suggests Dontos to be made Joffrey's personal jester.

In season 4, we see Dontos again in the godswood of the Red Keep, where he thanks Sansa for saving his life and giving her a necklace adorned with amethysts, telling her that his mother had worn it.

At the wedding feast of Joffrey Baratheon and Margaery Tyrell, when Joffrey is poisoned, Dontos approaches Sansa and they leave the place. Dontos leads her to the harbor, where a ship awaits for her, on the orders of Lord Petyr Baelish. Baelish appears on board and says to Sansa that Dontos helped her because Baelish promised him a reward.

He then orders Dontos to be shot with crossbow bolts, so that he cannot reveal to anyone that Baelish orchestrated Sansa's escape.
4. Defeats the Meereenese champion Oznak zo Pahl in single combat

Answer: Daario Naharis

Daario first appeared in season 3, as one of the leaders of a sellsword company called "Second Sons". After disposing of the other two captains of the company, Daario offered his services to Daenerys Targaryen. In season 4, we see Daario and the leader of the Unsullied, Grey Worm, engaging in gambling, in order to determine who will have the honor of rising at Daenerys' side, causing them to miss a meeting with her.

When the governors of Meereen send a champion so that Meereen's fate will be judged by single combat, Daario champions Daenerys and quickly wins the duel. Later, he reports to Daenerys that he and his Second Sons had captured Meereen's navy without her explicit orders, she is obviously irritated, but at the same time she is attracted to the daring sellsword.

When she learns that Yunkai, a city Daenerys had captured in season 3, has been retaken by its former masters, she sends Daario and the Second Sons to accompany her ambassador to the Yunkai'i, Hizdahr zo Loraq.
5. Counsels Alliser Thorne to let Jon Snow deal with the mutineers at Craster's Keep

Answer: Janos Slynt

Janos Slynt was first glimpsed in season 1, as commander of the City Watch of King's Landing. It was Slynt and Littlefinger who betrayed Eddard Stark when he attempted to confront Cersei Lannister. As a reward for his treachery, Slynt was made a lord by Joffrey Baratheon himself.

In season 2, Joffrey orders Slynt to find and eliminate all the natural-born children of the late King Robert Baratheon, which Slynt has no qualms to do. When Tyrion Lannister learns about this and discovers how ruthless Slynt is, strips him of his titles and forces him to join the Night's Watch.

In season 4, we see that Slynt has made it to his destination and has sided with Alliser Thorne against Jon Snow. In order to get rid of Snow, Slynt advises Thorne to send him to deal with the muntineers at Craster's Keep. Unfortunately for Slynt, Jon survives and accomplishes his mission.

At the great battle of Castle Black, when the tide seems to be turning against the Night's Watch, Slynt cowardly flees to the cellars of Castle Black.
6. Is persuaded by Davos Seaworth to fund he and his king's cause

Answer: Tycho Nestoris

Tycho Nestoris is a banker working for the Iron Bank of Braavos. We see him when Stannis Baratheon and Davos Seaworth go to the Iron Bank, requesting a loan so that they can hire sellswords and claim Stannis' birthright to the Iron Throne. Tycho initially is skeptical of Stannis' ability to win the war, citing that he has only 32 ships and very few soldiers.

However, Davos tells Tycho that the only power behind Joffrey and Tommen Baratheon's claim to the throne is Tywin Lannister, who is 67 years old and is indebted to the Iron Bank. Davos proceeds to say that there is only one reliable leader in Westeros: Stannis Baratheon, finally managing to convince Tycho.
7. Volunteers to be Tyrion Lannister's champion in a trial by combat

Answer: Oberyn Martell

Oberyn Martell is the younger brother of Prince Doran Martell of Dorne. Oberyn harbors a deep animosity towards the Lannisters, because Tywin Lannister had ordered the death of his sister, Elia and her children. In season 4, Oberyn arrives in King's Landing to assume his duties as member of the small council.

After his arrival in King's Landing, Oberyn immediately causes trouble when he confronts two Lannister soldiers because they were singing "The Rains of Castamere". After Joffrey Baratheon is poisoned at his wedding feast and Tyrion Lannister is accused of the murder, Oberyn is one of the three judges in Tyrion's trial and correctly surmises that he is innocent. Oberyn offers Tyrion to be his champion in a trial by combat, so that he can have his vengeance on Gregor Clegane, the man who actually performed the killing of Elia and her children.

When the trial by combat starts, Oberyn initially has the upper hand and manages to wound Clegane with his spear, but then he is thrown on the ground and killed by his opponent.

However, his death sets off a chain of events, which culminate in Tyrion's escape and Tywin's death.
8. Gets exiled by Daenerys Targaryen, despite having been her most loyal supporter

Answer: Jorah Mormont

Ser Jorah Mormont was first seen in season 1. He is the son of Jeor Mormont, 997th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Jorah has been banished from the Seven Kingdoms because he sold two poachers he caught in his lands as slaves, in order to satisfy the demands of his wife.

He then fled and wandered many years in Essos, until he entered the service of Viserys Targaryen (in fact, Jorah was being employed by Varys as a spy, in order to keep him informed of the doings of the last Targaryens", but his allegiance belongs to Viserys' sister, Daenerys.

He accompanies her in the Dothraki Sea, is present when her dragons are born and never leaves her side in the march through the Red Waste, the city of Qarth and her attempts to conquer Slaver's Bay.

In season 4, Jorah warns Daenerys that dragons can never be truly tamed. Some weeks after Meereen is occupied by Daenerys and her forces, the Unsullied and the Second Sons, Ser Barristan Selmy (a former knight of the Kingsguard who had been dismissed and entered Daenerys' service) is approached by one of Varys' "little birds", who has a pardon for Jorah.

When Daenerys confronts him, Jorah says it is an attempt by Tywin Lannister to weave discord in her camp. However, the year written on the pardon is the one when Jorah and Daenerys first met. Thus, Jorah is compelled to tell the truth. Immediately, she banishes him from Meereen.
9. Shoots the arrow that fatally wounds Ygritte during the Battle of Castle Black

Answer: Olly

Olly is a boy who lived with his parents in a village at the Gift, a land that belongs to the Night's Watch. When the wildlings, led by Tormund Giantsbane and Styr, the Magnar of the Thenns, raid the village, Olly's parents are killed. Styr keeps Olly alive and orders him to go to Castle Black and inform the men of the Night's Watch of the sack of the village, in a futile attempt to drive them out of their fortified positions. During the Battle of Castle Black, Olly is tasked to operate the wooden lift system. Later, Samwell Tarly encourages him to pick a weapon and defend his life. Olly picks a bow and notices Ygritte, who is ready to kill Jon Snow. Olly shoots one arrow, fatally wounding Ygritte.
10. His army arrives at the nick of time, saving the Night's Watch from Mance Rayder's wildling army.

Answer: Stannis Baratheon

Stannis Baratheon is the younger brother of Robert Baratheon and the older brother of Renly Baratheon. After Robert died having left no trueborn issue, since Cersei Lannister's children are the results of her incestuous relationship with her brother, Jaime, by all laws of inheritance the Iron Throne belongs to Stannis.

In season 2, Stannis attempts to claim his birthright, but the attempt ends in a defeat at the Battle of Blackwater Bay. In season 3, the red priestess Melisandre attempts to persuade Stannis to sacrifice one of Robert's natural-born children in order to wake a stone dragon, but Ser Davos Seaworth, Stannis' older advisor and most trustworthy accomplice, foils her plans.

In season 4, after having been shown the letter from Castle Black requesting help, Stannis starts preparing for a new campaign.

After being informed that Joffrey Baratheon is dead, Stannis laments that Davos' interfering with Melisandre's plans may cost him the throne. Davos that recommends the hiring of the Golden Company or any other mercenary organization, but Stannis replies he has no gold to pay them. Davos secures an audience with the Iron Bank of Braavos on behalf of his king and talks the bankers into helping Stannis.

The Lyseni pirate Salladhor Saan is among the mercenaries hired by Stannis and Davos. Stannis and his army arrive at the Wall and defeat Mance Rayder's wildling army, capturing the King-beyond-the Wall and saving Jon Snow's life. Jon Snow acknowledges Stannis as the one true king because his father, Eddard Stark, died supporting Stannis' claim. Stannis then asks Jon what Eddard would do with Mance Rayder and Jon replies that he would spare him. Later, when the surviving members of the Night's Watch bury their fallen, Stannis is present. Of all the claimant kings to the Iron Throne, Stannis was the only one to aid the Night's Watch.
