Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Ninja Warrior" is the name of the show on G4 TV in the US. What is the Japanese name of the show?

Answer: Sasuke

"Sasuke" first aired in September 1997 on Tokyo Broadcasting. As of 2007, it has been in continuous production. The obstacles on the show test a contestant's physical stamina, strength, endurance, agility and mental toughness.
2. How many stages must one pass to be crowned "Ninja Warrior?"

Answer: Four

There are one hundred competitors in the first stage. Those who pass (and generally less than 10% pass) move on to the second stage. Passing the second stage moves one on to the third stage- which is the only stage that is not timed. The rare few who make it past the third stage get to try to beat the fourth stage and earn the title, "Ninja Warrior."
3. Kazuhiko Akiyama was the first person to pass all the stages to become the "Ninja Warrior." What was his occupation?

Answer: crab diver

Akiyama won 2 million yen, or about $16,500 US dollars, 12,200 Euros or 8,325 GBP.
4. Makota Nagano was the second man to be named "Ninja Warrior." What was his occupation?

Answer: fishing boat captain

Nagano reached the top on his fourth trip to the final stage. On his second trip, he missed victory by .11 second.
5. Where did "Ninja Warrior" take place?

Answer: Midoriyama

Midoriyama is located in the city of Yokohoma on the island of Honshu, Japan.
6. Which of the following are or have been Stage 1 obstacles?

Answer: rolling log and jump hang

In the rolling log, the contestant must hold on to a log while it rolls down an incline. Drops in the track are designed to shake the contestant off.
In the jump hang, the contestant uses a small trampoline to leap over a pit of water onto a cargo net. He or she can then either climb the net or go under it to get to the next obstacle. Going under is quicker but the contestant has to worry about not touching the water. Making contact with the water is a disqualification.
Other Stage 1 obstacles have included the sextuple step, warped wall and wall climb.
7. Which is or has been a Stage 2 obstacle?

Answer: spider walk

The contestant traverses two parallel walls using their hands and feet pressing against the sides of the walls. The course requires the contestant to go up, then across, and finally down. They are allowed to spray their hands with some kind of resin substance before they start, if they so wish.
Stage 2 has also included obstacles called the chain reaction, wall climb, balance tank, conveyor belt, metal spin and three lifting walls weighing 30 kg., 40 kg. and 50 kg.
8. The final stage consists of two events--the 12.5 meter spider climb and the 10 meter rope climb. How long does a contestant have to complete the final stage and become the "Ninja Warrior?"

Answer: 30 seconds

Whenever the final stage is conquered, they change it. When Akiyama took it on, it only consisted of a 15 meter rope climb. They then added the spider climb where the contestant uses their hands and feet pressing against the sides of two parallel walls to scale them going straight up.
It was changed again after Nagano conquered the stage. Full details of the change can not be available until someone else reaches Stage 4.
9. You do not have to be Japanese to compete. A pair of US Olympic gymnasts-- twins in fact, competed. Which gold medal-winning gymnast joined his brother Morgan in the "Ninja Warrior" competition?

Answer: Paul Hamm

Paul was the first American to ever win the all-around title at the World Championships, doing so in 2003. He won 3 medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens--a gold in the all-around and silvers in the high bar and team.
Brian Boitano was a skater, Apolo Ohno was a speed skater and Viktor (not Victor) Klimenko was a Russian gymnast.
Other foreign athletes have also competed in "Ninja Warrior" as well as Japanese celebrities, a 13-year old school child, a 57-year old former gymnast and various others. There is a "Ninja Warrior" for women with different obstacles although a few women have also competed alongside the men.
10. Katsumi Yamada is particularly devoted to "Ninja Warrior." Although he has never won, Yamada continues to compete, even at the age of 41, and even after retiring from competition several times. What nickname did Yamada pick up for his devotion to the competition?

Answer: Mr. Ninja Warrior

Yamada purportedly has no job because it would interfere with his training for "Ninja Warrior." Through nineteen competitions he competed in all but one. He made it to the final stage a couple of times early on. Recently, however, he has had trouble getting past the first stage.
