Sayid, Kate, Charlie, Boone, Shannon, and Sawyer all hiked up to higher ground to try to get a signal on the transceiver. In the middle of an argument between Sayid and Sawyer, a monster attacked the group. Everyone ran, with Shannon screaming that she shouldn't have gone on the hike. Sawyer stayed behind, brought out a gun, and shot the monster.

The monster turned out to be a polar bear, stumping everyone. Further questions were raised when Kate wanted to know where Sawyer got the gun, and Sawyer claimed he got it off a U.S. Marshal who had been on the plane.

Boone came upon Shannon crying and staring at the dead bodies lying around. The reality of the crash had finally sunk in. Boone said that they were clearing the wreckage and that she should help, as she was being worthless. The two got into a big fight, and Shannon declared that she was going to go on the hike.

We learn in this episode that Charlie was a heroin addict. He was experiencing withdrawal symptoms on the plane and rushed to the bathroom, evading the flight attendants and security personnel who had been alerted by his odd behavior. He took the heroin out of his shoe where he was hiding it.

The plane started to crash, and Charlie got back to his seat in terror. However, he had dropped the heroin in the bathroom, and when he went looking for the cockpit, he must have found it, hence why he was in the bathroom.

Jin was making some strange seafood that no one wanted to eat. He first tried to give some to Hurley, but he refused and laughed. He then gave some to Claire, who finally accepted. When she ate it, she felt the baby more for the first time since the crash.

She was so excited that she made Jin feel her stomach, who wasn't too happy about that. This was where Claire finally decided that she thought her baby was a boy.

After Sayid had gotten into a physical fight with Sawyer over Sawyer calling Sayid a terrorist, Hurley sat with Sayid to show some sympathy. Sayid was working on the transceiver, and Hurley asked how he knew how to do that. Sayid replied that he had been a military communications officer and that he had fought in the Gulf War. Hurley wanted to know what branch of the military, and Sayid said the Republican Guard. Hurley realized that even though he liked Sayid, in the Gulf War, Sayid had been the enemy.

When Kate was on the plane, she was sitting next to the Marshal. A flight attendant asked them about their drinks. When the Marshal talked to Kate, it was obvious that the two knew each other. When we see Kate drinking her juice, we also see the handcuffs on her wrists, meaning that Kate was the prisoner.

When the plane began to crash, the Marshal was hit on the head with a piece of luggage. Kate got his keys and freed herself. This is where we see the back end of the plane break off.

Jack was working on the Marshal, minus a passed out Hurley. Jack had pulled the shrapnel out and was trying to stop the bleeding when the Marshal woke up. He grabbed Jack's shirt and immediately asked, "Where is she?" It was pretty obvious that he was talking about Kate, but Jack didn't know that yet.

As Shannon lay on the beach sunbathing, Boone tried to get her to help with finding clothes, but she wouldn't get up. Claire was sitting nearby, and she asked Shannon if Boone was her boyfriend. Shannon then revealed that Boone was her brother. Shannon asked Claire if she knew the sex of her baby, but Claire said she didn't. Later, after eating Jin's seafood, Claire stated that she thought that her baby was a boy.

While Walt was looking at a Spanish comic that he found, Michael tried to cheer him up over his missing dog Vincent. He told Walt that when they got home, he would get him another dog. Walt just looked at Michael, and then left in disgust. The offer was not very generously received.

As the others left for the hike, Sawyer was reading a letter. He decided to join the group, and when Kate commented on his presence, he said, "I'm a complex guy, sweetheart". Aside from shooting the polar bear, Sawyer spent most of this time on the hike arguing with everybody.
