Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teampall Bheanain was one of the first landmarks visited on the race. How many teams visited it?

Answer: Eleven

Departing from the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, California in Leg 1, teams flew all the way across the continent and the Atlantic Ocean to get to Shannon, Ireland. Upon arriving, the eleven teams raced by ferry to Inishmore and then signed up for a time on another ferry the following day.

While in Ireland, teams face a unique heights task for the Road Block (biking over a high-wire stretching across two cliffs) then had to guide a donkey back to their starting point. At the Pit Stop in Clifden, the last team was eliminated.
2. Teams went to the Netherlands in the second leg of the race. Which team was eliminated in Durgerdam?

Answer: Kate and Pat

After a couple of days in Ireland, teams flew to Amsterdam, The Netherlands to complete a Detour task involving either bikes (and finding matching ones in a large parking garage) or lugging heavy furniture into a city household via the front window. After this, they were all able to head into rural Holland, stopping off at a ditch in Ransdorp to perform a muddy pole vault to the other side, then taking a bakfiet to the Pit Stop in the nearby town of Durgerdam.

Here, Kate and Pat, one of the oldest teams on the race, ended up facing elimination.
3. How many legs of the race contained a clue read in Burkina Faso?

Answer: Three

Teams were told to fly to Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso, in Leg 3. Setting out from Amsterdam and flying to Ouagadougou, teams then took a train from the Main Station of the city all the way out to the village of Bingo to complete a Detour and Road Block in a remote, rural town. As the rain started to pour in Leg 3, Marianna and Julia were eliminated in the outskirts of the town.
Leg 4 also took place in Burkina Faso with teams making their way back to Ouagadougou (completing tasks in local villages and markets en route). Lorena and Jason were the team to leave this time as they were held back by the race's very first U-Turn.
Leg 5 began in Burkina Faso-- teams received a clue telling them to head back to Europe.
4. The fifth leg of the race brought teams to Tallinn, Estonia.

Answer: False

Flying out of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, teams were told to find St. Anne's Church in the capital city of Lithuania, Vilnius. This Gothic-style church was the start of teams' journeys through the city and neighbouring countryside including a Road Block in Old Town Vilnius (involving delivering packages through the town on foot) and a frustrating Detour involving either stilts or fence posts in Rumsiskės during a local festival. TK and Rachel snagged a first-place win and were followed in by Kynt and Vyxsin (how fitting, considering the Gothic influence) at the Pit Stop found at the Aukstaitija Windmill, near the festival.
5. The sixth leg of the race brought teams to the Fort of St. Lawrence, also known as Fort Lovrijenac, in what country?

Answer: Croatia

Teams actually found the Road Block task at this fort and one member of each team needed to rebuild the fort by fitting one of over one hundred unique stone blocks into a spot on a fortification wall to continue on. After this task, four six teams completed a zipline and boating task for the Detour while the other two rappelled and climbed on the side of Fort Bokar.

At the end of the leg, the six teams checked into the Pit Stop (complete with a gun salute) at the Stone Cross overlooking the city.

Here, Azaria and Hendekea were unable to catch up after a poor flight plan.
6. Flying over Tuscany in an ultralight aircraft in Leg 7, team members needed to find what key word, the name of a person and also the name of the town containing their next clue?

Answer: Vinci

Taking a ferry from Split, Croatia to Ancona, Italy, teams needed to find an aircraft hangar in Empoli, Tuscany to complete a Road Block task. For this task, they needed to hop into an ultralight aircraft and search a six-mile radius for a clue written on the ground below-- the word 'VINCI'.

When they said this keyword to a man on the ground, they could take their clue and head to the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci in the town of Vinci for their Detour. In this leg of the race, Kynt and Vyxsin were last to arrive after a major emotional breakdown driving through Tuscany. Arriving at the Boboli Gardens Pit Stop in Florence, they were met with the first non-elimination stop.
7. In Mumbai in Leg 8, some teams visited Dadar Flower Market for which of the following?

Answer: Detour

Teams visited this coastal Indian city in Leg 8 and encountered a whole new continent. Before the Detour, Kynt and Vyxsin completed a yoga-themed Speed Bump at the Dariya Mahal. They also used the U-Turn (on a team that had already passed) at Kabutar Khana. Because of issues at the Road Block, they ended up arriving at the Pit Stop at Bandra Fort in last place and were eliminated.

The Detour gave a choice between threading floral garlands at the Dadar Flower Market or putting up posters for Bollywood movies at the Dadar West Bridge.
8. Which team was last to arrive at the clue box on the grounds of Kishiwada Castle in Osaka, Japan (in Leg 9)?

Answer: TK and Rachel

While the other three teams took the same flight out of Mumbai, India in the beginning of Leg 9, TK and Rachel opted to take a connecting flight through a different country-- a failed connection resulted in their arriving several hours after all of the other teams.

They arrived at the Pit Stop in Tempozan Park in last place but faced the final non-elimination stop (of two). During this leg, some team members needed to navigate the busy one-way streets of Osaka. During the Detour, some teams toyed with new technology while others visited a fake flower shop.
9. In Leg 10, teams' first clue in this Asian city was at the Main Station, where they promptly hopped onto a high-speed rail train to the town of Jiji. What city were they in?

Answer: Taipei

Teams flew from Osaka, Japan to Taipei, Taiwan in this penultimate leg of the race and needed to receive a clue from Taipei Main Station sending them to the Road Block at Acrobatic Jeep in Jiji. TK and Rachel, meanwhile, had to complete a Speed Bump task involving fireworks at the nearby Heping Elementary School before returning to Taipei for a series of tasks in the city including a visit to a local tea house and a night market and their Detour at one of two unique city parks. Arriving at the Pit Stop in front of Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Nathan and Jennifer were eliminated.
10. Teams finished the race in Leg 11 at Girdwood Airport and took a ride down Twentymile River in what U.S. state?

Answer: Alaska

In what would be a first (though not a last) for the race, teams ended the course in the non-continental United States. Heading out from Taiwan, teams needed to find their flights to Anchorage, Alaska where they completed a fish-themed Detour task at Ship Creek Boat Launch, took a ride to a glacier (and climbed it) on Twentymile River, flew towards their memory and puzzle-based Road Block at Goose Lake Park, proceeded on foot through Anchorage, then took taxis to the finish line on the runway of Girdwood Airport. TK and Rachel won the race with Ron and Christina close behind. Donald (of Nicholas and Donald) became the oldest racer to make it to the finish line at 68 years of age.
