Jacob Ben Israel interviews Puck for the school news and reveals that while he and Lauren are ahead of Santana and Karofsky in the polls, many feel that Lauren wears the pants in their relationship and that Puck is losing his cool factor at McKinley. Figgins invites Sue and Will into his office and states that his favourite band, Air Supply, has refused to perform at the school's junior prom as initially envisioned.

Instead, he wants New Directions to take the stage. Sue is outraged and feels that it'll only encourage kids to act out and spike her family punch recipe. Will is also hesitant since the kids need to earn money for Nationals but Figgins says he'll give them the $400 he planned to give to Air Supply.

He also tells Sue that there will be no discussion on the matter.

She says that's fine, but produces a list of earlier songs that she refuses to hear the Glee Club sing (including "Run Joey Run" and the mash-up of "Crazy in Love" and "Hair").

Answer: Brittany

Lauren is worried that she'll need to make her own prom dress and the other girls tell her that she needs to buy one since it's such a special night. Mercedes is the only one to dislike the conversation as she claims she wasn't invited. Brittany says that she doesn't have a date either, but when she's on the dance floor everyone else's dates will want to spend time with her and they'll become her dates.

When Will informs everyone that they'll be headlining at prom with staggered performances, Mercedes leaves the room. Rachel is the one who leaves to talk to her and she says that she doesn't have a date either. Mercedes says she just wants the date and the dress because it's junior prom and she just wants to be Cinderella.

She wants a guy to come up to her, tell her she's beautiful, and ask her to dance. Rachel says she has a plan. Kurt invites Blaine to junior prom with him over dinner. Blaine is initially hesitant because of a past experience at a Sadie Hawkins dance, but he does it for Kurt.

Answer: Satan

Mercedes and Rachel bring Sam to the auditorium for a proposition. With their prom budgets in hand, they outline their plan: Sam will borrow a suit from his dad and take both of them to prom; they'll buy dresses at Goodwill; they'll make their own corsages and walk to the school; they'll all go to the $8.99 dinner special at Breadstix. Sam says it would be an honour to take them. Tina, Santana, Brittany, and Lauren go dress shopping and bring Kurt along for his astute fashion sense. Lauren is the first up and he convinces her to wear a navy dress (since her first dress makes her look like a lemon meringue pie). Santana is next and she wears a slim, red dress.

He accidentally refers to her as Satan as it matches her personality. Kurt decides to head out to choose his own outfit, but Santana speaks to him first.

She suggests that she and Dave guard him as Bully-Whips during prom to up her own reputation and gain sympathy votes.

Answer: Rolling in the Deep

Puck, worried about his street cred in the school, tells Artie that he needs his help to spike Coach Sylvester's punch, first by creating a distraction and second by having Artie be the one to dump a bottle of gin into the bowl. Artie admires the plan but says he can't do it; it wouldn't impress Brittany enough to get her to like him again. In the auditorium, Rachel decides to practice her prom number while some audio-visual students craft prom pieces.

When she begins to sing Adele's "Rolling in the Deep", she's interrupted by Jesse St. James who comes down to the stage to sing with her at the piano. Rachel is surprised when Jesse apologizes for what he did to her the previous year.

In addition, he asks her to prom.

Answer: Gardenia

Finn criticizes Rachel's choice to have Jesse come along on her, Sam, and Mercedes' 'prom on a budget' and Rachel says that she's allowed to date who she wants despite his trust issues. Finn says he doesn't even want to go to prom considering what Quinn is having him do and she recommends that he buy her a simple gardenia corsage with a green ribbon to match her eyes.

He inevitably does. Karofsky and Santana do their Bully-Whips duties to protect Kurt and it's clear that she's overdoing it. Karofsky is clearly stressed out that he has to do such a grating job while Santana shouts down the hall that as a teen gay, Kurt is safe walking the hall to his next checkpoint. Kurt simply walks away from her.

Answer: Cracking an egg

In home-ec, Brittany hesitates to crack open an egg because she can't tell which has a baby bird inside and which just contains egg. Tina tells her that they're technically the same thing, but this just confuses her more. During the class, Artie wheels into the room stating that he needs to ask Brittany a question, but he prefaces this with a rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". During the song, Puck, Sam, Finn, and Mike all come into the classroom to add their own musical influences to the rendition.

Despite the effort put into his song, Brittany still insist that she can't go to prom with him because he called her 'stupid' so she's going to have some 'me' time and dance with other peoples' dates instead. Exiting the room, Puck asks for approval on the punch-spiking idea and Artie agrees to do it.

At the Hummel residence, Burt, Blaine, and Finn discuss prom (including Blaine's asking to jam with New Directions onstage) and Kurt appears in his prom outfit, a tribute to the late Alexander McQueen and the Royal Wedding that he made himself. Finn likes it because it makes him look like 'Gay Braveheart' but both Burt and Blaine think that Kurt is stirring the pot a bit much and giving bullies the edge they need to start trouble. Kurt says the prom is about joy and not fear and he affirms that he will wear his suit regardless of their opinions. In the halls, Karofsky walks Kurt to class and he tearfully apologizes to Kurt for what he's done. Kurt accepts this and tells him that he's sorry to see so much pain in his eyes about coming out.

He does say that perhaps people at McKinley are moving on though.

Answer: Finn

Quinn prepares for the big evening at home and Finn arrives. When he hands her her corsage, she notices it matches her eyes. Her mom comes out with the camera for pictures.
At Breadstix, Jesse talks to Rachel, Sam, and Mercedes about his plan to open his own business during the recession (as he feels that this is the best time). His idea: to work as a consultant for show choirs to give them an extra edge. When Finn and Quinn arrive they ask everyone at the table to vote for them before Finn and Jesse start hurling insults at each other.
Soon enough, everyone goes to prom. Artie, Puck, and Sam are the first to hit the stage with their own rendition of Rebecca Black's viral hit, "Friday".

For a slow dance selection, Rachel decides against her original idea to sing "Rolling in the Deep" and instead opts for Christina Perri's "Jar of Hearts". The song clearly makes Finn think about his relationships. Sitting at her table, Mercedes is approached by Sam who says she looks beautiful. He asks her to dance and she gladly accepts.
After the song ends, Puck enacts his plan and has Artie begin pouring gin into the punch bowl. Unfortunately, Sue expects something when Puck starts dancing without any music and she catches Artie in the act. She brings him to her office to show him her dental kit and says that he's in for an excruciating cleaning. She tries to get him to give up Puck as the real perpetrator but he refuses to say anything.
Back in the auditorium, Blaine sings The Black Kids' "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" with Tina and Brittany backing him. During the song, Finn stops Jesse from taking things too far with Rachel and they start to fight. Becky calls 'code blue' to Sue and she comes in to kick them out. Quinn is devastated, fearing that her campaign for Prom Queen has been utterly compromised.

Answer: Kurt

Figgins calls the candidates for Prom King and Queen to the stage to make the announcement and after tallying the votes, it turns out that Karofsky has won Prom King, much to Santana's delight. When Figgins announces Prom Queen, it turns out that Kurt won with an overwhelming number of votes. Kurt, shocked, runs from the auditorium. Blaine chases him out and it's clear that Kurt is frustrated that no one at this school made any progress.
In the bathroom, Rachel tries to stop Quinn but finds herself getting slapped in the face; Quinn feels that she lost because Finn still loves her instead.
Santana cries in the choir room and Brittany consoles her. None of them can stand to stay at prom.
Kurt says that he's staying no matter what-- he's going to go in and get coronated to show them that it doesn't matter. Blaine is proud of him. Rachel appreciates the drama of the slap and she tells Quinn that things will be okay because she's the prettiest girl she's ever met and she's more than that. Brittany tells Santana that people know she's not herself and if she just embraced her awesomeness she'd have won. She believes in her, but right now they have to believe in Kurt.
Artie, meanwhile, reveals that he actually poured lemonade into the punch and not alcohol. Sue has no choice but to let him go.

Everyone returns to the auditorium and Kurt takes the stage to receive his crown and scepter. After saying "eat your heart out, Kate Middleton", the kids in Glee applaud him before everyone else joins in.
Right after this, the customary first dance between King and Queen is held, but Karofsky can't bear to dance with another guy in front of the school. As Mercedes and Santana begin to sing ABBA's "Dancing Queen", Dave leaves and Blaine offers to take his place, much to Kurt's delight. Soon, everyone begins to dance, get their pictures taken, and enjoy prom despite its faults.
