To the tune of "Rhapsody in Blue", Rachel stands in the middle of Times Square, finally having made it to New York. The kids start singing while enjoying lunch in the square and Kurt notes how long it took them to finally reach this point in their Glee Club careers. Rachel rushes up with several tickets to "Cats", too excited to realize that the show closed eleven years earlier. At the hotel, Will fulfills the group's reservations for two rooms as it's all they can afford. The woman behind the counter states that most Glee Clubs divide their rooms by sexual orientation, not gender. Rachel and Finn discuss their arrival in New York and his and Quinn's break-up but Rachel doesn't want to talk about any relationships until after the competition. Puck and Lauren try to order cocktails from the hotel bar before Will instructs them to head upstairs.

Will introduces the Glee Club to their consultant, Jesse St. James, and only Rachel seems excited to have him onboard; everyone else doesn't trust him after last year. Both Will and Jesse agree that this year the kids should continue with the trend of original songs and that one will be a duet (to start) and another will be a group number. Jesse also thinks that they should take the Vocal Adrenaline model of success and frame the entire setlist around their star performer though it's clear that Finn thinks this goes against the grain of New Directions. Sue is furious about New Directions being able to get to Nationals and she has Terri (the Honey Badger) try to screw up their flight itineraries. She brings Howard (who Sue nicknames 'Panda Express') and they break into Figgins' email account to change the layover from Chicago to Tripoli, Libya. Terri says that Sue must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed if she wants the Glee Club dead and Sue says she has no idea.

Jacob Ben Israel interviews Puck for the school news and reveals that while he and Lauren are ahead of Santana and Karofsky in the polls, many feel that Lauren wears the pants in their relationship and that Puck is losing his cool factor at McKinley. Figgins invites Sue and Will into his office and states that his favourite band, Air Supply, has refused to perform at the school's junior prom as initially envisioned. Instead, he wants New Directions to take the stage. Sue is outraged and feels that it'll only encourage kids to act out and spike her family punch recipe. Will is also hesitant since the kids need to earn money for Nationals but Figgins says he'll give them the $400 he planned to give to Air Supply. He also tells Sue that there will be no discussion on the matter. She says that's fine, but produces a list of earlier songs that she refuses to hear the Glee Club sing (including "Run Joey Run" and the mash-up of "Crazy in Love" and "Hair").

Brittany claims that this show brings her two favourite things, hot melted cheese and talking to people, together at last and her first guests are Mercedes and Tina (even though it sort of opposes the title of the show). The gossip on the show takes a turn when Brittany reveals that Santana 'plays for the other team'. Of course, this tidbit takes a back seat when Brittany allows her cat, Lord Tubbington, to eat the fondue cheese straight from the pot since he's on the Atkins Diet. Rachel speaks to Sam and gives him the gift of Lip Chap since many make fun of his particular facial feature. She also asks if he'd like to go to prom with her but he denies her request, claiming that she's not his type.

Will congratulates New Directions on their win at Regionals but informs them that they'll need to step up their dance skills before heading to Nationals in a few weeks. When the kids start their 'booty camp', Finn accidentally hits Rachel in the face, breaking her nose. While at the doctor's office, the doctor tries to convince her to take on a nose job to fix a deviated septum while she's in. When he states that it may actually improve her high noses, she considers the proposal. The Glee Club is surprised by her interest in having a nose like Quinn's. Santana takes the opportunity to note that she's sure everyone in New Directions has something about themselves they want to change and recommends that they get their problems fixed to make their lives better. Will criticizes this approach though as their most hated qualities are often their most interesting. The kids aren't convinced; they know that being different at McKinley means that they'll get bullied for it.

From Quiz "A Night of Neglect"

To pay for their trip to New York City for Nationals, the kids of New Directions need to earn $5,000 and Will proposes that they do it by selling saltwater taffy. To reach their goal they'll need to sell (according to his math) 20,000 pieces in the school. The kids are worried about this plan; earlier in the day, despite the Regionals win, Santana still received a slushie facial in the hall (courtesy of Karofsky). Quite simply, their win did nothing to raise their reputation in the school; New Directions is just as uncool as they ever were and saltwater taffy is the last thing they'd be able to push.

At Dalton Academy, Blaine bursts into the Warblers' room singing Maroon 5's "Misery" and everyone joins in on the number. Kurt feels like the song is not only expected, but a bit dull. At the end of the song, Blaine exclaims that it'll be their opener at Regionals. Kurt speaks to him honestly; the group doesn't feel like the Warblers most of the time. Because of the amount of solos Blaine gets, it feels like 'Blaine and the Pips'. Been there, done that. At McKinley, Rachel presents Finn with her second original song, a follow-up to "My Headband" about being an only child called "Only Child". Finn says that it's better than "My Headband", but it's not really good enough for Regionals.

In the beginning of the episode, Emma calls the Celibacy Club to order as they begin their meeting; only Rachel and Quinn are in attendance. Quinn claims that she's back in the club to keep herself on track, especially after last year. Rachel's there to focus on songwriting and to avoid thinking about Finn who, as she says, is kryptonite. They decide to sell a necklace comprised of a heart and a key though they don't give out the latter portion to signify holding out until marriage. Later, in the staff lounge, Emma notes that the chastity charms never took off; students started wearing them as clip-on nipple rings. Will encourages her to keep trying but his talk is cut short by the reappearance of Holly Holliday, who's subbing for the school's health and wellness teacher.

Principal Figgins calls Will into his office regarding an issue in the school, specifically alcohol. Figgins states that kids are showing up wasted (on booze, not learning) and they're getting suspended for it. He also blames alcohol aimed at teens and pop music, especially music by pop artist 'ke-dollar-sign-ha' (though Will corrects him- it's 'Ke$ha'). Will says that he'll do whatever he can to help and Figgins states that he's announcing Alcohol Awareness Week at McKinley High to combat teen alcohol consumption and that he's invited Kitty Dukakis to speak at an assembly later in the week where the Glee Club will perform an anti-drinking song. Will has no choice but to agree.

From Quiz "The Sue Sylvester Shuffle"

Answer: BMX biking

Sue and the Cheerios are practicing for their big number for the cheerleading Regionals qualifier in the gymnasium. While everyone dons a blue wig (a la Katy Perry) they perform their choreographed piece involving BMX biking on ramps, flaming setpieces, and pyrotechnic bras. Unfortunately, Sue's not too thrilled. She actually states that she's bored by the routine. To remedy this, she asks all of the Cheerios to place silicone falsies in their breasts. Quinn says that everyone's frustrated. The number never seems to be good enough unless it's good enough for Sue despite the fact that it's the most elaborate number any cheer team ever seems to have performed. Sue agrees that maybe something needs to be done about that. The football team, meanwhile, is excited about their own prospects. They're a shoe-in for the championship title for the first time in the school's history. During the final huddle, however, Karofsky starts to make fun of Kurt and the Glee Club, and Finn, noticeably bothered, is too distracted to catch the ball during the game; they lose.

Emma goes out of her way to speak to Will because she assumes he's avoiding her. When he reveals that he's spending Christmas alone this year, she invites him to her and Carl's place for their Christmas Eve party. Will politely declines as he would rather keep things separate. When Coach Beiste comes by to hand out names for the staff's Secret Santa, Will is displeased to find that he's pulled Sue's name. In the halls, Brittany and Artie decorate Artie's locker and Brittany reveals that she still believes in Santa. Artie is surprised, but decides to preserve Brittany's joy about Kris Kringle. She recommends that he send his list to Santa as soon as possible because the roads to the North Pole are likely getting treacherous.

In the staff room, Will asks Emma to come along for the Glee Club's trip to Sectionals because last year she seemed to be a good luck charm for them. He rephrases that however, because they don't really need luck with the setlist he has planned. Emma tries to guess his setlist plans saying that he'll start with Finn and Rachel singing a ballad, move into a group classic rock number, and end with Mercedes hitting a high note. She turns out to be right and says that Will's numbers are great...they're just predictable. The problem is that so many of the kids are talented and he only highlights the brightest stars for competition. New Directions used to be underdogs, but now that they're favourites going into Sectionals, they need to step up their game and prove that they're not retreading old ground. Will can't agree more when he thinks about it.

Kurt arrives at the school with his dad, Burt, and Finn's mom, Carol, both of whom have big news: they're getting married! Kurt's dad proposed in the classroom where they met. Kurt is thrilled and he decides to plan the wedding but his dad says not to go too extravagant as he's taking Carol on a luxurious honeymoon to Waikiki (to the hotel where the "LOST" guest stars used to stay). Finn is kind of stunned but he says he's happy for his mom. Kurt says that he'll ask New Directions to be the band for the wedding because they're not expensive and they need practice for Sectionals. Sue, meanwhile, packages her wedding invites and sends them with Becky to the post office. After a segment of 'Sue's Corner', the news station's anchors, Rod and Andrea, ended up revealing their recent engagement. Sue, deciding that she was desperate, went on an online dating site and found that her closest match was herself. This led her to decide to marry herself in a wedding ceremony.

When Will comes into the school, Sue stops him in the hall and informs him that she is now Principal Sue. When Will asks why, she says that a strain of monkey flu from Borneo has made its way to McKinley High School and that Principal Figgins has contracted it from one of the students. As it turns out, Sue actually had Lauren Zises sneeze on him in the halls. As a result, Sue has been able to take the Principal position no thanks to a series of strong legal clauses and blackmail. She decides that her first order of business will be to dissolve the Glee Club. After she departs, Lauren sneezes on Mr. Schuester and he realizes that he's powerless to stop himself from getting sick.

From Quiz "The Rocky Horror Glee Show"

Answer: Santana

Opening the episode, "Rocky Horror" fans are treated to the real deal, an emulation of the original opening of "Rocky Horror" in which the red lips (on the black background) sing "Science Fiction/Double Feature". The New Directions student doing the honours is Santana. This quickly progresses to Rachel (as Janet) and Finn (as Brad) on a dry-ice-covered stage as they begin to sing "Over at the Frankenstein Place" for their dress rehearsal. Before the song finishes, they're cut off by Dr. Carl who comes on stage to ask Will what exactly he did with Emma. Of course, that needs explaining.

Will goes to the choir room with some bad news: Puck's in juvie. He ended up crashing his mom's car into a convenience store to steal an ATM. As a result of his actions, the team is desperate to find a replacement (or two) so that they have enough people for Sectionals. Luckily, Sam Evans has joined to pick up the slack. After brief introductions, Will informs them that their project this week will be to sing duets with one another. In addition, he'll be making this into a competition. The pair to sing the best duet (put to a vote) would win a dinner for two to Breadstix. Everyone loves the idea and Kurt decides to try and duet with Sam.

From Quiz "Grilled Cheesus"

This episode begins with Finn at home making himself a grilled cheese sandwich on his George Foreman grill. When he opens the appliance he finds that his meal has burnt to depict what looks like Jesus Christ and he dubs his meal 'Grilled Cheesus'. Rather than eat the son of God he decides to pray to his food that they'll win their first football game for Artie's sake. In return, he'll ask that God be honoured in Glee Club that week. When they win, he has no choice but to follow up on his promise. At Burt's auto shop, Kurt brings his dad his healthy breakfast and he is informed that Finn and Carol will be coming by for dinner. Kurt says he can't attend, though; "The Sound of Music" is being performed at a local theater. Burt is disappointed that Kurt doesn't want to spend time on Fridays with the family.

Coming back from the summer break, Jacob Ben Israel plans to post a video on his blog about 'Glee's Big Gay Summer'. He begins by interviewing Rachel and Finn, who are still an item after their revelations of love during Regionals. Will is asked about his lackluster song choices from relatively bad genres while Puck is asked about his remaining feelings for Quinn. Quinn is asked about her 'bastard child' while Santana says that her summer was uneventful. Brittany sets the record straight about her summer vacation- she was lost in the sewers. Tina and Mike Chang try to cover up their blossoming relationship and Will is asked to stop rapping. Kurt gets a slushie in the face before the video comes to an end. Seems like not much has changed.

Kurt was bullied by Dave at school. At Dalton Academy, Kurt met Blaine, who gave him a lot of encouragement. On the other hand, the students made fun of Coach Beiste. In a poignant scene between Beiste and Will in the locker room, she confronted to Will that she had never been kissed. Will cheered her up by saying she was a beautiful amazing woman, whose heart was just too big for most men to stand. He later gave her a kiss.

Lauren is worried that she'll need to make her own prom dress and the other girls tell her that she needs to buy one since it's such a special night. Mercedes is the only one to dislike the conversation as she claims she wasn't invited. Brittany says that she doesn't have a date either, but when she's on the dance floor everyone else's dates will want to spend time with her and they'll become her dates. When Will informs everyone that they'll be headlining at prom with staggered performances, Mercedes leaves the room. Rachel is the one who leaves to talk to her and she says that she doesn't have a date either. Mercedes says she just wants the date and the dress because it's junior prom and she just wants to be Cinderella. She wants a guy to come up to her, tell her she's beautiful, and ask her to dance. Rachel says she has a plan. Kurt invites Blaine to junior prom with him over dinner. Blaine is initially hesitant because of a past experience at a Sadie Hawkins dance, but he does it for Kurt.

Sue and Terri visit a coffee shop for a quick meeting pertaining to their next plan of action (although Sue is dressed as David Bowie to stay in touch with the enemy). She states that many organizations have been felled in recent years by the website 'Wikileaks' and taking advantage of the power of the rumour would be beneficial to their cause. For this reason she's resurrected the school newspaper, The Muckraker, despite its dissolving due to lack of interest years ago. Along with Jacob Ben Israel, Brittany appears on the news team which is dedicated to its lack of hard-hitting facts; Sue calls for an 'if I heard it it's probably true or something' attitude towards the paper. Sue changes her outfit to Ann Coulter before sitting down with Terri (claiming it's because she's become unhinged). Terri says that she'd rather take Will out of the Glee Club than break it down from within and she and Sue get thinking.

From Quiz "Born This Way"

Answer: Santana

Will decides that he wants to help the kids feel more comfortable with themselves while he helps Emma clean her grapes. When he brings up her insecurities about her OCD, she asks him not to call it that (instead calling herself 'Neat Freak'). He suggests that they finally come to grips with her condition and she resists it. This gives him a great idea though-- teach the kids with the help of Lady Gaga. Santana contemplates getting Brittany back by winning the role of Prom Queen at this year's junior prom. She thinks about campaigning alongside Sam but because of his lack of popularity at McKinley she decides to skip over him as an option. Instead, she spies Karofsky down the hall and believes that he's a good option...at least until she witnesses him checking out Sam. She's distracted while at the coffee shop with Tina, Mercedes, Kurt, and Blaine until she realize that the key to fixing all of the problems is by using Karofsky to win Prom Queen. This, in turn, will allow Kurt to return to McKinley, bringing more power to New Directions for Nationals and making her the hero.

Quinn watches Rachel singing from the hall and concerns herself with her and Finn's business-- after all, without Finn she may never take home the prom queen crown. Because they say you should keep your friends close but your enemies closer, Quinn decides to be Rachel Berry's new best friend to ensure that Finn doesn't stray away. Kurt, while sitting in front of the mirror at home, whistles along with the Warblers' bird Pavarotti until his pet's whistling stops. When he attends the next Warblers' meeting at the school, he wears all black and sings "Blackbird" by The Beatles, dedicating it to the deceased bird.

Emma asks Holly why she doesn't think celibacy is a valid option for teens and Holly says that it's a great idea, but an unrealistic one. She says that all they can do is help teens be aware of certain issues and let them decide what's best. She also informs Will that his Glee kids really need a lesson or two because some of them are clueless. Emma continues to argue saying that graphic and sexual images have no place with teenagers or adults. Santana asks Brittany if she'd like to come over after school to make out but Brittany isn't feeling too well. When she says that she thinks she has a bun in the oven, she asks Santana not to tell anyone but Santana can barely keep her mouth shut half-way through a single sentence. Within twenty seconds, Artie finds out through the grapevine. In the choir room, Artie looks horrible because of the news and Brittany explains that she has a baby on the way because a stork built its nest outside her window so it must be bringing her a baby. Will realizes that Holly was right about a lack of information.

In the staff room, Will breaks the ice with Emma and suggests that they go back to being friends. To show his enthusiasm for her marriage with Carl, he gives her a housewarming gift, a two-slice toaster. When they begin to catch up, she asks if he's been dating anyone and Sue interrupts saying that he'll probably turn to alcoholism when he can't find a partner and his Glee Club loses to hers at Regionals. When Emma asks how she got into Glee Club coaching, Sue states that Will inspired her and she went to Westvale to speak to the coach of Aural Intensity. When he fell (or was pushed by Sue, rather) down two flights of stairs, she took the job. In the choir room, Puck runs into Rachel practicing the piano and writing her original song and he lets it slip that he knows her dads are out of town. He suggests a party on Saturday with just the Glee kids so that they can relax before Regionals. She feels that this would betray her parents' trust and firmly says no.

At school, Sam and Quinn flirt in the hallway and talk about their date on Friday. Sam is worried that she might be slipping away from him, especially after catching mono a few weeks earlier. He believed her when she said that she didn't kiss Finn, she performed CPR on him, but it doesn't change the fact that she seems like her mind is elsewhere. To preserve their relationship, he remembers his dad's idea that women love men who hunt and perform rock and roll. ...and who's more 'rock and roll' than Justin Bieber? Combing his hair into a Bieber bowl cut, he tests his new one-man band, 'The Justin Bieber Experience' on a group of young girls and is surprised at how well it works. Meanwhile, Rachel, concentrating fully on her career, tries to set a new fashion trend by giving Brittany her allowance and forcing her to adopt a certain style of hers. This fails--Brittany chooses to wear leg warmers like Rachel, but wears them on her arms instead. Rachel allows this since it's too cold for Brittany not to wear them with her tank top as long as she claims that she's copying Berry's look.

In the choir room, New Directions decorates a tree while singing "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year" from the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" TV special. Of course, the Island of Misfit Toys theme fits the club members perfectly. When Mr. Schuester arrives and finds the kids decorating the tree, he asks where everything came from. Finn found the tree at the side of the road and thought it would be best to get into the Christmas spirit, Santana explains that they stole the ornaments from a deceased Christmas hoarder, and Puck snagged the gifts (empty boxes) from a mall display. Will reasons that it isn't really what Glee Club is about, but Mercedes explains that despite their second annual Sectionals win, they're still not popular at school. Will reiterates that Christmas is about being thankful for the things that they do have and that they'll all be volunteering for a homeless children's program in town by singing carols in the school for donations. The kids are worried about this, but Finn steps up and says they need to try it.

When Will goes to the choir room to inform the kids about the changes, Rachel says that she's chosen the perfect ballad for herself and Finn. Will stops her there. First, he announces that he will be bringing Mike and Brittany to the forefront to showcase their dance moves because their competition, typical high school choirs, don't tend to move at this stage of the game. In addition, neither Rachel nor Mercedes will be singing the typical opening number. Instead, the winners of the duets competition, Sam and Quinn, will be opening the show. Rachel is frustrated by this change and asks Finn to do something about it. When he opens his mouth, he's called out for being hypocritical and Santana finally reveals that she and Finn slept together the year before, shocking Rachel.
