In director Tobe Hooper's 1979 movie Ben and Mark are in the city of Ximico, Guatemala. They are loading up on Holy water, which immediately glows brightly. This allows them to know one of the vampires has found them again.
In TNT's 2004 movie starring Rob Lowe as Ben Mears, Ben is alone in a random city and he finds the priest from Jerusalem's Lot. Father Callahan escaped the city in the book as well, but in Hooper's movie he is killed by Mr. Barlow. Callahan is played by James Cromwell in this updated version.

In his pursuit of Father Callahan Ben does all those things, except shoot anyone. Father Callahan does take out a gun and shoots Ben, right before Ben sends them both out of a closed window.

Since Ben chased the priest and sent them both out the window, the doctor is not feeling much sympathy for him. After this scene we are sent back in time, to when Ben arrived back in Salem's Lot after many years away.

The characters are a bit more accurate to the novel this time around. Charlie is the school bus driver and his dog is Champ. There was NO Charlie seen in the Hooper movie and Champ was Mike's dog. Mike was also a groundskeeper in that movie, and he owns the dump in TNT's remake. Mike does dig and cover graves with his backhoe in the newer movie, seen later in the movie.

But, he wanted it left in the cellar, via outside access, and then that outside door bolted shut with four padlocks. Floyd and Mike got freaked out in both TV versions, and in the first movie the never did padlock the cellar door.

Ben stayed in the town with his aunt when he was a boy. Her name was Cynthia Stowens, and Eva Prunier told Ben that she knew her. She and Weasel also told Ben they remembered him as the boy who discovered the bodies of Hewbie and Birdy Marsten.

Jimmie Cody explains that Danny's shock is due to stress, grief or emotional trauma. We know that Danny witnessed Ralphie's murder, but everyone else just knows that Ralphie's missing.
