Mr. Barlow arrives as Dud is spray painting the word "jerk" on Mike's backhoe. Barlow (played by Rutger Hauer) offers Dud the chance to be more than he is, more than a crippled man who gets ridiculed regularly. Australia native Brendan Cowell plays Dud Rogers.

Some Americans viewed the book as traitorous because after his rescue by US Marines, Ben revealed their practice of damage control. The Marines killed innocent villagers to avoid revealing their location to Afghan troops. Three of these men were "court-marshaled and imprisoned". Ben received a Pulitzer Prize for this account.

The first movie did have the two formerly married, and Weasel a hopeless drunk that Eva continued to house and tolerate. His name was Gordon "Weasel" Phillips and played by Elisha Cook Jr. Cook was born in 1903 and died in 1995. The second movie had the character named Ed Weasel and though in love with Eva, they were never married. Australia native Martin Vaughan portrayed Weasel in the 2004 remake. Vaughn played two different characters on the TV series "All Saints".

Mark Petrie is not one of Marjorie's sons at all, but a close friend of the boys. Danny Glick is played by Andre de Vanny and Ralphie by Zac Richmond. Ralphie calls her later and she sadly invites his vampiric self back into their home.

Charlie Rhodes goes outside to retrieve his new puppy from the cold and witnesses Mike as he begins to cover Danny's grave. Since Charlie's first dog, Champ, was killed and stuck on the iron fence around Harmony Hill Cemetery the priest told Mike and Floyd the ground was no longer consecrated. Apparently that gave Danny power over Mike and caused Mike to open his casket. Danny then turned Mike into a vampire as well.

This is never seen, but implied heavily later.

The scene with Mike differs in the first movie. He still seems like he is drunk or drugged, but instead of being with Floyd he encounters Ben and Jason Burke in Dell's bar in the 1979 version. This movie shows Mike stumbling into Norton's Cafe and sitting down with Floyd. The first movie had no Floyd Tibbits. They used a character called Ned Tebbets as Susan Norton's ex-boyfriend. Canada native Todd MacDonald plays Floyd and Barney McFadden played Ned in 1979.

Dud, once slow and crippled, was now powerful and blindingly fast. Though Floyd was Dud's friend in life, in death Dud used him for food. It seemed to be a theme among the vampires to turn the people who knew them well. It was easier to lull those folks into trusting them. Dud also turned Ruth Crockett, but this was not seen on camera.

Ned waits for Ben inside his room at Eva's, room 6. Ben ends up in the hospital that night and Ned in jail. It is inside the jail that Barlow turns Ned. The newer movie has Floyd almost a vampire and completely covered to block out the sun. They are both taken into custody in this movie and Floyd tries to kill Ben in jail, but cannot get to him.

Mike comes back to Matt's house, after dying there. He offers himself up to Matt as a romantic partner, as he knows inherently now that Matt is gay. What he does not realize is that he is dead. He lifts up his hospital gown for Matt and he can see the autopsy incision, but looks over to a mirror and sees no reflection of his own, just Matt's. Matt's is so scared he has a heart attack after getting Mike to leave.

He revokes his invitation, but it takes more convincing to get Mike out of the house. And like movie number one, Mike exits through the bedroom window.

Tony awakens to find his wife convulsing, and Ralphie pokes his head up. Grinning devilishly as he eats away at Marjorie's wrist. Then he jumps over the bed and attacks his father. New Zealand native Rebecca Gibney played Marjorie Glick. She played Jane Halifax in the series "Halifax f.p.".

Mark, played by Lance Kerwin in 1979, almost opened his window when Danny appeared explaining that "he commands it". Instead he grabbed a cross off his cemetery model and places it up to the window and driving the undead Danny away. Mark, played by Daniel Byrd in 2004, did invite Danny into his room. He also grabbed a model cross and sent Danny's undead butt packing!

He told Susan first. It enabled her to forgive him for his earlier deception about the book he was writing. He later confesses the story to Father Callahan as well, not for absolution, but for peace of mind. He believes that while he lay frightened out of his mind inside the Marsten house, a little boy named Ronnie lay dying in a bathtub. Ben lives all those years believing his cowardice killed that child.

Susan and Mark are both on a mission to kill Barlow at the Marsten house. They sneak into an unlocked window together, her with a gun and he with a wooden stake. Though Mr. Straker has been seen driving away from the house, he suddenly appears. He knocks Mark unconscious and feeds Susan to Barlow.
