Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the South Essex regiment arrive at the British army camp, who is commanding them?

Answer: Sir Henry Simmerson

Simmerson had bought his commission, a practice common at this time.
2. When the South Essex are drilling, a soldier is accused of, "dragging his feet", and ordered to be flogged. Who is this?

Answer: Dobbs

The South Essex had just arrived after a long march and immediately were expected to carry out drills so that their commander could show off. Sharpe makes the observation that, "Flogged soldiers only know how to turn their backs".
3. What is the "special remedy" that Sharpe orders for the soldier after he has been flogged?

Answer: A pint of rum, half and half.

Harper explains that the pint of rum was to be, "Half in your belly and half on your back".
4. What does Simmerson believe to be a cure for, "A spleen brought on by a flogging"?

Answer: Being bled.

This is what Simmerson is having done when Sharpe first meets him.
5. What did Major Hogan say after Sharpe proved to Simmerson that he could teach the men to fire three rounds a minute, and, in the case of Dobbs, four rounds.

Answer: "Stop showing off, Sharpe".

The ability to fire three rounds a minute in any weather was Sharpe's idea of what made a good soldier. Simmerson did not believe that his soldiers would be able to fire more than two rounds a minute.
6. What happened when Major Lennox led the detachment across the bridge to engage the French infantry?

Answer: They were ambushed by the French cavalry.

Simmerson had foolishly ordered the attack, which was unnecessary, and Major Lennox believed it to be "a fool's errand".
7. What does Major Lennox ask of Sharpe as he lay dying?

Answer: To get an Imperial Eagle.

During the unnecessary attack the regimental colours were lost. This was the ultimate ignomy in defeat and to take an Imperial Eagle from the French would, in some way, make up for this.
8. At the meeting with Wellesley and Simmerson, after the action, who was gazetted captain?

Answer: Sharpe

Simmerson's account of the engagement differed wildly from the actual events and he recommended his nephew, Gibbons, to be gazetted captain. Major Hogan, however, had already furnished Wellesley with the true account.
9. Around which battle is this episode based?

Answer: Talavera

The battle of Talavera is where Wellesley gave Simmerson the opportunity to redeem himself, but he ran away leaving Sharpe and his men to face the French column.
10. What is Sir Arthur Wellesley's reply to Hogan when asked, "What are your intentions, Sir Arthur?"

Answer: "To give the French a damn good thrashing".

Clearly, Wellesley did not intend to lose, but his reply conveys his strength of feeling.
