Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the episode, "All Our Yesterdays", Kirk, Spock and McCoy get accidentally sent back to earlier time periods on the planet Sarpeidon. Kirk goes to the middle ages, while Spock and McCoy end up in an ancient ice age, where they meet a woman named Zarabeth. Which one of them had a romantic encounter with her?

Answer: Spock

The planet's inhabitants all went back to earlier times in history to avoid being killed when their sun went Nova. Because they didn't go through any preliminary preparation before moving through time, Spock and McCoy began to revert back to more primal instincts, which for Spock included eating meat and having a sexual relationship with Zarabeth.

They eventually were able to return to the present, but had to leave Zarabeth behind because she had been altered in some way so that she couldn't come back.
2. The discovery of Data's head in a cave last entered in the 1890's started a time travel adventure in the "Next Generation" 2 part episode "Time's Arrow". Where was the cave located?

Answer: San Francisco

It's suggested during the episode that among other things, Jack London went to the Klondike at Mark Twain's suggestion, and that Twain left his watch in the cave because he'd learned that his watch had been discovered in the cave when he went into the future. As always, time travel can be confusing. We also got a hint during the episode of just how old Guinan is.
3. When he traveled to the 1930's, James Kirk was forced to make a horrible choice in the classic episode "City on the Edge of Forever", as he had to allow a woman he was in love with to die to restore the proper timeline. What did Dr. McCoy accidentally travel through to set the events in motion?

Answer: Guardian of Forever

The Doctor had been injected with a medicine that caused him to go temporarily insane, and he beamed himself to an adjacent planet, where he came across the Guardian. He went through the Guardian, was sent back to the 1930's, and changed history by saving a woman named Edith Keeler.

She would go on to start a peace movement that contributed to Germany winning WWII. Kirk and Spock, along with the rest of the away team that was chasing the doctor, were trapped in a limbo status as a result, so they went back in time to fix the problem. Kirk fell in love with Edith before he realized that she had to die. Eventually, she was hit by a car while crossing the street and killed, as Kirk held McCoy back to keep him from saving her, and the timeline was restored.
4. If the "DS9" episode "Little Green Men" is correct, Ferengi time travelers from the station were the ones that crashed at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. When Quark tried to convince a US Military officer that they wanted to make a trade deal, the officer compared him to his brother in law. What occupation did the Brother in law work at?

Answer: Used Car Salesman

The comparison was not a favorable one. Quark had been given a new shuttle by an old business rival to supposedly make amends for past problems. When he and Rom took Nog to Earth in it to attend Starfleet Academy, the shuttle turned out to be sabotaged, and they went back in time.

They managed to get back with the help of Odo, who'd sneaked on board because he suspected Quark was up to something.
5. Kirk's Enterprise went back to the 1960's twice during "TOS". The first time they went back was by accident in the episode "Tomorrow is Yesterday". Among the problems they had to deal with was returning an Air Force pilot who'd ended up on the Enterprise, but needed to be returned to his own time because his son would lead a future trip to which planet?

Answer: Saturn

In order to get Captain Christopher back where he belonged, but without any knowledge of his future son, they had to go back in time a short distance, return him to the proper place in time to eliminate any knowledge of his being on the Enterprise, and then go forward to get home.
6. On their second trip back to the 60's, they ended up dealing with an individual named Gary Seven in the episode "Assignment: Earth". He was trying to destroy an orbiting missile platform that was about to be launched by the US, while the Enterprise crew was trying to stop him in the mistaken belief that he was up to no good. His assistant was played by a woman who'd go on to have a successful movie career. Who was she?

Answer: Teri Garr

Teri Garr would appear in several movies in the 70's and 80's including "Young Frankenstein" and "Mr. Mom". Gary Seven said he was a human from the 20th century, but had been trained for his mission by an alien race that's never identified. The only clue we got was a shape shifting creature named Isis, which mainly appeared as a cat.

The successful destruction of the platform, which turned out to fit exactly into the history books, scared the world powers into dropping the idea. This episode was also intended to set up a spin off series featuring Gary Seven and Teri Garr's character Roberta, but it never materialized.
7. The first one of the movies involving time travel was "Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home", as Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the gang go back in time to 1986 in search of a pair of humpback whales to bring to the 23rd century. In order to get spending money, Kirk sold his glasses to an antique dealer. Who originally gave Kirk the glasses during the movie "The Wrath of Kahn"?

Answer: McCoy

Dr. McCoy gave him the glasses early in the 2nd movie, "The Wrath of Kahn". Kirk was allergic to the drug Retinax, which apparently cured his type of vision problem in the 23rd century, so he needed reading glasses. The frames, which pre-dated the late 20th century, were sold to the Antiques dealer for $100.

It was noted in passing that the beauty of the situation was that he could sell the glasses in the 20th century, but they'd still be available for the doctor to give him in the future.
8. The crew of the USS Voyager got sent back to 1995 in the episode "Future's End". During Part 1 of the episode, we got to see a phaser battle at a famous Los Angeles landmark. Which one?

Answer: Griffith Observatory

An astronomer at the Observatory had figured out that Voyager was in orbit, but because she called some other astronomers instead of just calling her boss Henry Starling, he sent his assistant to kill her armed with a phaser. Tom Paris & Tuvok managed to fight him off and save her. Voyager was accidentally sent back in time by a 29th century captain who was trying to destroy them because he believed that they caused a catastrophe in his time period, and was himself sent back to the 1960's. If the details of the episode are correct, the computer age of the late 20th century occurred because Starling found the ship and used the technology to get rich.
9. As we continue into the 21st century, Captain Archer and T'Pol from "Star Trek: Enterprise" went back to 2004 to stop a Xindi plot in Detroit in the episode "Carpenter Street ". Which Xindi species did they have to deal with?

Answer: Reptilian

The Reptilian species had gone back to gather information on humans in connection with a possible future use of biological weapons against humanity. Based on information from the episode "Countdown", this was apparently done in the past to hide their presence not only from humans but also from the other Xindi. Archer and T'Pol were sent back in time by a man from the far future named Daniels, who was part of group working against other time travelers trying to alter Earth's future.

They managed to shut down the operation, and T'Pol doubts about time travel were removed in the process.
10. The next time travel incident is in 2024, and involved "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", as Captain Sisko has to take the place of a famous person to keep history intact in the episode "Past Tense". What other Star Trek time travel episode refers to this episode?

Answer: Little Green Men

In the time period, the unemployed had been locked into Sanctuary Districts in the major cities and just left there to rot. A man named Gabriel Bell took action to protect hostages taken during a riot in the San Francisco district, and also got messages about the conditions in the district out on the internet.

He was one of many people killed when the police stormed the district, but his actions led to the abolition of the districts shortly afterward. When Sisko and Dr. Bashir ended up in the District, Bell was killed while helping protect them. Sisko took Bell's place when the riot broke out and restored the timeline. During the episode "Little Green Men", Nog was reading through a history of Earth, and was surprised to discover that Bell looked exactly like Captain Sisko.
11. In the movie "Star Trek: First Contact", the Enterprise-E had to go back to 2063 to keep the Borg from stopping the first faster than light flight by a human being. In what state did the action on earth take place?

Answer: Montana

The missile/warp ship was launched from the same silo it was in while waiting to be used for nuclear warfare. There are small amounts of information about the World War that took place in the mid 21st century throughout the "Star Trek" Universe, but the series focused more on what happened after the planet united following contact with the Vulcans.
12. The next incident of time travel takes place in the 22nd century, as a member of the crew on board Archer's Enterprise is in reality a time traveler from the future. What is his name?

Answer: Daniels

Daniels, who is from the 31st century, appears in multiple episodes giving Captain Archer information regarding what is described as a temporal cold war and ways to avoid messing up the timeline. He also moved Archer and T'Pol to different time periods as required to deal with different issues.
13. As we move forward into the 23rd century, the next trip back in time was only 3 days, as shown in the original series episode "The Naked Time". The crew was sent back in time while escaping the pull of a collapsing planet. In the midst of this they had to deal with a strange disease that caused the crew to lose its emotional inhibitions. What other "Star Trek" series had an episode that referenced this one?

Answer: Next Generation

The first regular episode of "Next Generation" was "The Naked Now", which involved a similar scenario, although they were trying to get away from a collapsing star instead of a planet. When a version of the same disease started running rampant on board, Dr McCoy's cure became the starting point for Dr Crusher's solution.

In the original episode, the engines had been turned off, and when they did a cold restart, the strain of escaping the planet's gravity put the ship in a time warp. The ship got thrown 3 days back in time, which was one of Captain Kirk's 17 time encursions, as mentioned on "DS9". Presumably, there were no renditions of "I'll take you Home Again Kathleen" taking place while they got to repeat those days.
14. Thanks to time travel, the command staff of "Deep Space Nine" got a unique opportunity to interact with the crew of James Kirk's Enterprise in the episode "Trials and Tribble-ations". The story took place simultaneously with the classic episode "The Trouble with Tribbles" from the original series. Both stories centered on the actions of a human looking Klingon named Arne Darvin. Did the same actor play the character in both episodes?

Answer: Yes

Charlie Brill played the spy that poisoned the grain in the original episode, and then played the aged version of the same character on "DS9". After being kicked out of the Klingon Empire, the character wanted revenge against Kirk for exposing his plan and ruining his life.

He used the Bajoran Orb of Time to send himself and the Defiant to the time period in hopes of killing Captain Kirk and changing his fate. Based on this episode, the classic scene where tribbles were falling on Kirk's head out of the storage bin was due in part to Sisko & Dax searching for a tribble that had a bomb inside it.

They found the bomb, saved Kirk, and went back to the present with minimal damage, except of course for any bruises that O'Brien and Bashir got while getting caught up in a bar fight between the Klingons and part of the Enterprise crew, including Scotty and Chekov.
15. The most unique case of time travel occurred in the "Next Generation" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". The writers took two recurring elements from the "Star Trek" world, time travel and alternate realities, and combined them into a fascinating what if scenario. In the episode, Guinan's decision that Tasha needed to be told of her alternate future led to her joining the Enterprise-C crew on their journey back to the past.

Answer: False

It was actually Tasha who realized that Guinan was holding something back about her and insisted she be told about what happened to her in the actual reality. When she learned about how she'd suffered a meaningless death, it convinced her that she needed to go with the Enterprise-C to give her death some value.

The irony is that while she no doubt helped them in their battle with the Romulans, she ended up being captured, and her half Romulan daughter Sela would end up working against the Federation, so she actually caused yet another alternate reality.
16. Captain Picard's vacation ended up involving romance, adventure, and time travelers from the 27th century in the episode "Captain's Holiday". What race were the time travelers?

Answer: Vorgons

Risa is portrayed as the party planet of the "Star Trek" universe, dating at least to the 22nd century. After Picard was forced into taking a vacation through a ship wide conspiracy that apparently covered all but a couple of ensigns, he headed to Risa for a week.

While there, he gets involved in an adventure/romance with a woman named Vash, who's being chased by a Ferengi and 2 time travelers, all of whom are after a 27th century weapon called the Tox Uthat. Ultimately, Picard manages to destroy the weapon, and the Vorgons go back to their time noting that he'd destroyed it just as history indicated.
17. The effort to save a planet was complicated by a time traveler who wasn't quite what he seemed in the "Next Generation" episode "A Matter of Time". Which of the following answers best describes the situation involving the time traveler and his ship?

Answer: Traveler-22nd Century Ship-26th Century

A scientist from the 26th century had gone back to the 22nd century, only to have his ship stolen by a person from that time period. That individual, who called himself Dr. Rasmussen, then went to the Enterprise in the 24th century pretending to be a researcher studying the Enterprise crew's effort to prevent a global catastrophe on Penthara IV.

In reality, he came to steal items that he could later pretend to invent in order to get rich. Unfortunately for him, the Enterprise crew figured out what he was doing, and the ship automatically went to its next location while he was being held for questioning.

As to where and when that was, it's never explained.
18. A ship from the past caused the Enterprise-D to get kicked into a repeating time warp during the episode "Cause and Effect". A crucial element in the crew's realization of the problem was a poker game being played by some of the officers. Who won the hand the only time it was fully played out?

Answer: Crusher

The 1st time we saw the poker game, Dr. Crusher called Riker's bluff because she had a feeling that's what he was doing. It wasn't until the next time through the time warp that Riker realized that she was going to call his bluff before he tried to play it. That was a key part in their realization that something strange was going on.

After they finally avoid the collision with the Bozeman, it turns out that 18 days had passed for the Enterprise while in the time warp, but that was nothing compared to the Bozeman's crew finding themselves 90 years in the future.
19. The "Voyager" episode "Relativity" not only gave us a glimpse of the ship before the beginning of the series, but had a unique scenario where the person sending Seven of Nine back in time to save Voyager was also the person trying to destroy it.

Answer: True

The same Captain Braxton that was involved in the prior episode "Future's End" was a pivotal character in this episode as well. He had Seven go back in time to locate a bomb that used time based elements to destroy Voyager in the future. When she finally located the bomb, it turned out that a version of Braxton from even farther in the future was the one who placed it on the ship.

He'd resented being stuck on 20th century earth for 30 years because of Janeway's actions in "Future's End", and was taking revenge.

The Braxton that recruited Seven to help him was arrested for crimes he was going to commit in the future. That kind of scenario makes you hope that they never do figure out how to travel through time for real.
20. In order to help Captain Archer understand what was at stake in his struggles with the Xindi, he was brought to a future version of the Enterprise in the episode "Aziti Prime". It turned out that the habit of identifying each version of the Enterprise by letter continued beyond Captain Picard's Enterprise-E. Which version of the Enterprise did he bring him to?

Answer: Enterprise-J

Daniels brings him on board while a final battle between the race that placed the spheres in the Delphic Expanse and the Federation is underway 400 years in the future. The Xindi turned out to be allies with the Federation and were helping them win the battle.

The information given to them about Earth destroying the Xindi in the future was meant to prevent that alliance. He's given a Xindi medal to help him prove he's been to the future and is telling the truth when he tries to prevent the assault on Earth in his own time.
