Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Doctor and his companions materialize beside the Thames in London, but it turns out to be a very different London than they expect. Everything is run down and seemingly abandoned! What happens when The Doctor's granddaughter Susan climbs a wall to get a better look around?

Answer: She falls and injures herself

In the opening scene of the first episode ("World's End") we see a man with a peculiar apparatus on his head wade into the Thames and drown. Behind him on a wall a poster reads "It is forbidden to dump bodies into the river".

The TARDIS materializes along the bank of the Thames, beneath a bridge. When Susan tries to climb up a wall to see what is above them, part of the bridge above them collapses, blocking the door to the TARDIS and stranding them all outside. At the same time, Susan falls and twists her ankle, leaving her unable to effectively walk.

The Doctor's companions were played by:

Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman);
Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright); and
William Russell (Ian Chesterton).
2. The first episode is entitled "World's End", and the four time travelers are beginning to think that some terrible tragedy has struck London. While exploring a nearby building, Ian Chesterton and the Doctor find a calendar in a drawer. What is the year on the calendar?

Answer: 2164

With a girder blocking entrance into the TARDIS, Ian and the Doctor go searching for something that might help them to remove the blockage - a crowbar to provide leverage, or ideally an acetylene torch. All that they find, though, is information. Firstly, the Doctor finds the calendar, which gives them a better frame of reference about the actual date, and secondly, they spy a flying saucer over the city, which gives them some understanding of what may have happened to everybody.

When they go back to the location of the TARDIS, they find the girls missing. Before they can try to find them, however, they are surrounded by five men with the headgear apparatus.
3. Susan and Barbara are collected up by members of the human resistance to the Daleks while Ian and the Doctor are out exploring. When Ian and the Doctor return to the TARDIS, they are captured by the Daleks.

Answer: True

Ian and the Doctor find themselves surrounded by five humans that have been enslaved by the Daleks. The men have metal helmets on their heads and sound a lot like Daleks when they speak. The Doctor and Ian are about to try to escape the 'Robomen' by jumping into the Thames, but just as they turn to run, they are stopped by a Dalek emerging from the water.

At the beginning of the second episode ("The Daleks"), Ian and the Doctor are taken to a saucer spaceship. Placed in cells, the prisoners are to be sent to work in a gigantic mine that the Daleks have established. Any who try to escape are converted into Robomen.
4. In the second episode ("The Daleks"), Susan and Barbara are integrated into the resistance, given jobs to help in the effort against the Daleks. What is significant about Dortmun, the leader of the resistance?

Answer: He is confined to a wheelchair

While he may be stuck in a wheelchair, Dortmun is a genius who develops a grenade-sized bomb that can actually harm the Daleks, shattering their shells. Unfortunately, when members of the resistance attempt a frontal assault against the Daleks at the helipad where the Dalek saucer is, the bombs prove just as deadly for the humans. A number of them also lose their lives in the attack.

Dortmun was played by Alan Judd.
5. An attack on the Daleks by the resistance saves the Doctor from being converted into a Roboman, but the attack also results in Susan and Barbara being separated. After the confusion, who finds whom during the third episode ("Day of Reckoning")?

Answer: Susan finds the Doctor

In "Day of Reckoning", Barbara makes her way back to the resistance headquarters after the attack to recuperate from a mild injury. She and one of the members of the resistance (Jenny) decide to accompany the leader Dortmun to another hideout (the Civic Transport Museum) where he hopes to use fresh materials to continue working on his bombs.

Susan, in the meantime, stays with a member of the resistance by the name of David Campbell and they try to stay hidden from the Daleks. They end up encountering the Doctor and another surviving resistance member who had saved him from being converted.

Ian, still on the saucer, must fight with Craddock, a resistance member who has been converted into a Roboman, and survives with the help of another prisoner named Larry. They learn of the Dalek plans to destroy London and to go to their mining operation.

Jenny was played by Ann Davies, David Campbell was played by Peter Fraser, Michael Goldie played Craddock, and Graham Rigby played Larry.
6. In episode four, "The End of Tomorrow", Ian encounters a monstrous creature that is a 'pet' of the Black Dalek who oversees the mining operation. What is the creature called?

Answer: A Slyther

The grotesque Slyther patrols around the mining camp, mostly at night, looking for food, which in this case is people.

The Black Dalek is an example of a Mark II Dalek, the first time we see a hierarchy among them. These Daleks have a black dome , shoulders and skirt. They are also known as a Supreme Controller. There is also an intermediary level of Dalek that are Saucer Commanders. Their domes are also black, but they have alternating light and dark panels for their skirt.
7. Susan and David enter the sewers to find a way out of London safely, but they face a different kind of danger underground. What is in the sewers?

Answer: Alligators

Susan and David have to leave the Doctor behind on the surface, as he had passed out and they could not carry him down ladders. With the intent to spend no more than an hour searching out a path, the two of them begin their search.

While in the sewers they encounter fellow resistance member Carl Tyler, who informs them of the presence of alligators. During the invasion, the animals in the zoo either escaped or were set free, and some of them (the alligators in this case) were able to thrive in other locations.

Tyler was played by Bernard Kay.
8. The fifth episode, "The Waking Ally", sees Ian and Larry jump into a mining waste basket to escape the Black Dalek's pet monster. Before they can do anything else, the basket begins to descend into the mine. How long does it take them to reach the bottom?

Answer: 20 minutes

The basket moves down at a very fast rate, but it still takes 20 minutes to reach the bottom, with Ian and Larry commenting on how warm it is getting and how their ears are popping as they descend.

At the bottom of the mine, Larry finds his brother Phil, who has been converted into a Roboman. In trying to awaken Phil and defend himself at the same time, the two brothers are electrocuted and both die.

Afterwards, Ian finds Barbara and Jenny, who were captured by the Daleks when an old woman and her daughter betrayed them in exchange for food.
9. In "Flashpoint" (episode six), the efforts of the Doctor and his Companions are enough to foil the plans of the Daleks, but they are unable to prevent the Dalek bomb from going off.

Answer: True

Originally intending to destroy the core of the Earth, the Daleks are unable to get the bomb to its intended location because of the efforts of Ian, who managed to block the delivery tube with debris. While the time travelers were able foil the Dalek plans, they were still left with a humongous explosion that caused a volcanic eruption (in England!).

Susan and David manage to incapacitate the Daleks through the sabotage of a device that allowed the Daleks to move around without static-charged floors (a limitation seen the first time they met the Daleks). With the Daleks (temporarily) immobilized, the Doctor and Barbara give orders to the Robomen to turn on their masters, and a successful revolt ensues.
10. For the first time since the beginning of "Doctor Who", a Companion (or more than one) leaves the Doctor. Who decides to leave?

Answer: Susan Foreman

Over the course of their ordeal against the Daleks, Susan fell head over heels for David Campbell, who also fell in love with Susan in return. Despite the difficulty of having to choose between her grandfather and David, Susan ultimately decides to stay behind, to finally have one time and one place that she can call home, something that she has always longed for.

However, she DID have some help from her grandfather, the Doctor, in deciding. As she agonized over her decision, The Doctor essentially locked her out of the TARDIS and told her over the intercom that her time to have her own life had arrived.
