Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the TARDIS materializes, the Doctor and his lone companion Steven Taylor (Peter Purves) step out to try to determine where and when they are. Once the Doctor realizes that they are in Paris in the 16th century, he is keen to seek out a man by the name of Charles Preslin. What is Preslin's occupation?

Answer: Apothecary

The Doctor finds the Apothecary Preslin in his shop, although at first the man (played by Erik Chitty) denies that Charles Preslin lives there, for fear that the Doctor is looking for heretics against Catholic ideology. But after speaking of other (current) scientific advancements, such as the microscope, Preslin is drawn into a conversation about his theories on germs. He also mentions the tensions in the city between the Catholics and Protestants, and how the Cardinal of Lorraine and the Abbot of Amboise have been hunting for scientists.

(The first episode of the four-part series is entitled, appropriately, "War of God".)
2. The Doctor leaves Steven at a tavern with some money to await his return, but when Steven sees a man follow the Doctor out the door, he is unable to follow. Why?

Answer: He has to pay for his wine

Before departing to find Preslin, the Doctor takes Steven to a local tavern where they briefly discuss his plans. Steven orders a cup of wine and the Doctor gives him some money to pay for it. When the Doctor leaves and is followed, Steven tries to go after them, but is stopped by the landlord (tending the bar) who demands payment for the wine. Trying to figure out the money causes too much of a delay, and in the end Steven ends up being helped by Nicholas Muss (played by David Weston), one of the group of Huguenots drinking in the tavern.
3. Once he is able to leave, Steven sets out to find the Doctor, only to bump into someone the moment he steps out of the tavern. Who?

Answer: A young girl being chased by soldiers

The young girl, being chased by four soldiers, runs into Steven as he leaves the tavern, then proceeds to enter the tavern herself to hide. The soldiers follow, but find themselves outnumbered by the Huguenots inside, who force them to leave. It turns out that her name is Anne Chaplet, and she is a servant in the household of the Abbot of Amboise.

Wondering why the girl was being chased, Steven asks the question, which brings out a story of her overhearing a conversation between the guards about 'Wassy' (a town where a number of Huguenots were killed by Catholics) and how it will happen again before the week is up.

Anne was portrayed by Annette Robertson.
4. As curfew approaches, Steven joins the Huguenots and spends the night at the house of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. In the morning, he returns to the tavern, but there is no word of the Doctor. After returning to Coligny's house, Steven thinks he sees the Doctor outside, but the Huguenots claim that he is which enemy of theirs?

Answer: The Abbot of Amboise

The Abbot of Amboise appears to be the spitting image of the Doctor (William Hartnell played both roles). Steven claims that it must be the Doctor masquerading as the Abbot, and he takes Nicholas Muss to try to find the Doctor at the shop of Charles Preslin. Unfortunately, they not only cannot find the Doctor, but an old woman they encounter claims that Preslin was snatched up for heresy.

Nicholas becomes suspicious of Steven, believing him to be a spy for the Catholics, so Steven gives him the slip in an effort to find the Doctor on his own.
5. Looking for the Doctor, Steven goes to the Abbot's house and overhears Simon, Roger and the Marshal speak of the Queen Mother's instruction to have the Sea Beggar assassinated. Who turns out to be the Sea Beggar?

Answer: Admiral Gaspard de Coligny

("The Sea Begger" is the title of the second episode in the serial.)

At first we are led to believe (during a conversation between the admiral and the marshal) that the 'Sea Beggar' refers to the Dutch and their request for aid in their conflict with Spain. At the end of the episode, however, the admiral reveals to his compatriots that the king had called HIM the Sea Beggar.

Unbeknownst to the Huguenots, however, Steven is now aware of a plot to have the admiral assassinated, and when he tried to bring this information to Nicholas, he looks for paper on the the admiral's desk to leave a note. The Viscount Gaston de Leran (one of the group of Huguenots from earlier, portrayed by Eric Thompson) finds him rummaging in the desk, reinforcing the misconception that he is a spy for the Catholics. Gaston draws his sword to fight, but Steven refuses, and Gaston lets him leave unharmed.
6. Is the assassination attempt successful?

Answer: No

After attending an audience with the king (and various other dignitaries) to discuss the political issues at hand, Admiral Gaspard de Coligny makes his way back to his home along the Rue des Fosse-St.-Germain.

Simultaneously, Steven and Anne... who have gone back to the abbot's house because of Steven's belief that Amboise is the Doctor in disguise... overhear more details about the impending assassination attempt, and rush off to prevent it from happening. They return to the admiral's house to tell the other Huguenots of the location, then Nicholas joins Steven and they hurry to the Rue des Fosse-St.-Germain. In the end, it was the assassin who missed his shot, only wounding the admiral in the shoulder.
7. Marshal Gaspard de Saux-Tavannes, disillusioned with the Abbot of Amboise's lack of results in inciting the people to violence, orders his guards to kill him. Who is framed as the murderer of the abbot?

Answer: Steven

The marshal orders the abbot's death when word of the failed assassination attempt reaches them by way of Roger Colbert. And by doing so, the marshal manages to do what the assassin was supposed to... incite the people to outrage against the Huguenots.

Steven arrives (once again) to the abbot's house to find the body lying out in plain view amidst a crowd of angry citizens. He goes to the body, hoping that it is not (as he believed) the Doctor. When Roger sees Steven standing over the body of the abbot, he calls out that Steven is the murderer, forcing Steven to run for his life with the crowd in pursuit.

This third episode of the serial, appropriately, is called "Priest of Death".
8. Believing the Doctor to be dead, Steven returns to Preslin's shop, where Anne has been hiding. Since this was the last place that he knew for sure the Doctor had visited, he and Anne search madly for the Doctor's clothes and (hopefully) the key to the TARDIS. What do they actually find?

Answer: The Doctor's cane

Since Steven believed that the Doctor was masquerading as the Abbot of Amboise, it made sense to him that he would have changed clothes at Preslin's shop. But despite more than one thorough search, all that turns up is the Doctor's cane, which puzzles Steven more than anything.

The title of the final episode of the serial is "Bell of Doom".
9. Unexpectedly, the Doctor shows up at Preslin's shop, giving no explanation as to his mysterious absence. When he hears of the curfew and the assassination attempt on the Sea Beggar, he asks and learns from Anne that it is the specific year of 1572 and knows the St. Bartholomew's Eve massacre is about to occur. What does the Doctor do to help or change the situation?

Answer: Nothing

Prince Henry of Navarre was already being escorted out of Paris (on the orders of the Queen Mother).

The Doctor just told Anne to go to her Aunt's house, in spite of the curfew, and that she would be safe there.

Steven asks about the fate of the Huguenots that he befriended, and is shocked to hear from the Doctor that they will be killed (including the admiral that survived the assassination attempt) in the massacre, along with more than 10,000 other Protestants, just in the city of Paris, and that the conflict would spread further and affect the whole of the country.

In the end, all the Doctor chooses to do is to leave in the TARDIS, stating that he cannot alter the course of history.
10. Leaving 16th century France behind, the Doctor lands the TARDIS in 'present day' London, and Steven decides to leave the Doctor. Just a few minutes later, however, a woman enters the TARDIS looking for the Police Box phone. Which new companion is she?

Answer: Dodo Chaplet

Disgusted with the Doctor's apparent uncaring attitude regarding the massacre, and specifically the fate of Anne Chaplet, Steven decides to leave the Doctor and the TARDIS wherever they happen to land. And he does so.

After Steven leaves, the Doctor muses over the fact that he is alone, without companions, and briefly entertains the idea of returning to Gallifrey, but just then, Dodo Chaplet bursts into the TARDIS, believing it to be a normal Police Box... a child has been hit by a car, and she wants to phone for help.

Moments later, Steven comes back to the TARDIS telling the Doctor to take off immediately, as there are two policemen coming, and what would happen if they entered the faux Police Box? The Doctor responds immediately, and all of a sudden he has two companions again.

Faced with the sudden reality of unknown travel in time and space, Dodo is calm and accepting, saying that nothing is tying her to her home. Steven is aghast at the whole situation, but when he learns that her name is Dodo Chaplet and that her great-grandfather was French, he hopes that she might be the descendant of Anne (suggesting that she might have survived the massacre).
