Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Buffy was living in Los Angeles in this season three premier.

Answer: Anne

After she'd sent Angel to Hell in the season two finale, Buffy left Sunnydale and lived in Los Angeles for the summer. She used her middle name, Anne, as an alias. But, that did not prevent someone from recognizing her. Lily, formerly known as Chanterelle in the episode "Lie to Me", was a homeless girl who came into the diner where Buffy worked. Buffy saved her life (again) and "Lily" took the name Anne for her own when Buffy went home. We later see her character, going by Anne Steele, on "Angel". Julia Lee played that part on both shows.

The name of the diner where Buffy worked was Helen's Kitchen.
2. Three brand new characters were introduced- a slayer, a vampire, and a love interest for Buffy.

Answer: Faith, Hope & Trick

Faith was the slayer called after Kendra's death in the season two finale. She'd have a long lasting impact on both "Buffy" and "Angel". Scott Hope was Buffy's love interest. He dumped her in the episode "Homecoming" because he felt she was not really interested in him. We found out in season seven there was actually a better reason for Scott ending the relationship. Mr. Trick was the vampire who came to town with Kakistos, an ancient vampire who was hunting Faith. Faith later killed Mr. Trick and went to the mayor looking for employment.
3. Spike returned to town mourning his break up with Drusilla, and kidnapped Willow and Xander.

Answer: Lover's Walk

This was Spike's only season three appearance. Drusilla had abandoned him because of his alliance with the slayer in season two. That alliance had taken away her sire, Angelus, and she felt like Spike "tasted like ashes" as a result. Spike came to town, drunk, and crashed into the "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign.

He captured Willow and Xander so Willow could perform a love spell to get Drusilla back. After joining Buffy and Angel in a fight, Spike changed him mind about the spell and told them where to find their friends.

This episode also marked the end of Xander's romance with Cordelia.
4. When the adults ate the chocolate, they all reverted back to teenage behavior.

Answer: Band Candy

This one may have been a gimme, so to speak, if you're taking the quiz and not a fan of the show. Principal Snyder made the students sell chocolate bars for the marching band, and it was spelled to make adults act irresponsible, like teens. Ethan Rayne had been hired by Mr. Trick to do this on behalf of the mayor, who needed babies to feed as tribute to a demon named Larconis.

This was also the episode where Buffy told Joyce and Giles she was fed up with being scheduled 24 hours a day by both of them at once. And, this was the time of the SAT exam, which is usually taken before your senior year. Giles and Joyce consummated their single episode romance on the hood of a police car, which was revealed near the end of this season in "Earshot".
5. Joyce's addition of a Nigerian mask to her room caused things to reanimate after death.

Answer: Dead Man's Party

This was just after Buffy's return and episode two of the season. In an attempt to avoid direct conversations with Buffy about how her summer long absence had made all of them feel, the Scoobies decided to throw her a party. The mask, which had already brought a cat back to life, ended up throwing the entire party into chaos. Dead bodies were seeking it out in order to become the demon incarnate. It was Joyce's book club pal Pat who ended up putting on the mask. Buffy took her out with a shovel to the eyes, and she simply vanished. It was Oz who actually spoke the title, "I think this dead man's party has moved upstairs".

Nancy Lenehan played Pat.
6. Anyanka arrived in town to help Cordelia move on from Xander's betrayal.

Answer: The Wish

Xander and Cordelia had to break up, so Cordelia could leave town and meet Angel in Los Angeles in the spin-off series. So, in season three, Xander finally found himself attracted to his best friend Willow. Willow was dating Oz, Xander dating Cordy, and they were having a hard time keeping their hands off of each other.

In Spike's episode, "Lover's Walk", Cordelia and Oz caught Willow and Xander kissing. Cordelia fell through a cement staircase and was impaled by rebar. When she came back to school in "The Wish", Anyanka was waiting there to help Cordelia make a wish. Anyanka's whole reason for living, 1120 years to date, had been to punish men who'd wronged women. Cordelia's wish was slow coming, but it was a doozy when she wished that "Buffy Summers had never come to Sunnydale". Fortunately, an alternate universe version of Giles reversed that wish, and rendered Anyanka mortal.

She went by the shortened name of Anya during most of her time on the series, which was 85 episodes.
7. During a snowy Sunnydale Christmas, Angel and Buffy face off against the First.

Answer: Amends

Buffy was able to see Angel's dreams, and some were quite disturbing. This was the first, but not last, appearance of the original evil. It tried to convince Angel to kill himself, and appeared as some of Angelus' victims. This included Jenny Calendar, the kids' teacher he killed in season two.

Instead of the sun coming up to fry Angel, by some miracle it snowed and stayed overcast instead. Maybe that was the mysterious Powers That Be that sent the visions to Angel on his show?
8. Buffy turned 18, and the Watcher's Council came to Sunnydale to test her.

Answer: Helpless

I am not sure whose idea this was, or exactly why it came to be. I never understood how there could be a special test given to the slayers when they turned 18, when some were older than 18 when they became slayers. In any event, the test required Giles to betray Buffy. In the end, he helped her, which led to his being fired as her Watcher. This opened the door for the witless wonder, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Of course, not all witless wonders are destined to remain that way...

Nikki Wood was a slayer who was most likely older when she became a slayer. And while Faith's age was never revealed, she hinted a few times she was older than Buffy, who was already 17 when Kendra died.
9. While Xander felt useless and unneeded, Faith took an opportunity to rid him of his virginity.

Answer: The Zeppo

There was yet another apocalypse afoot in Sunnydale, and with Faith in the mix, Xander had been regulated to the sidelines. Cordelia had already let him know he was "the Zeppo", the useless part of the Scoobies. And, while they were all fighting to keep the Hellmouth closed, Xander was busy trying to prevent Jack O'Toole from bombing the school. No one ever knew what Xander had done.

He never told anyone, and it was never hinted that he'd mentioned it off screen. They all did find out about him and Faith having sex that night, but it was several episodes later.

The title reference is to Zeppo Marx, the youngest of the famous Marx brothers. I am not sure how useless he truly was, but he did leave the group after they achieved success.
10. Buffy could read everyone's thoughts after she took on an "aspect of the demon" she'd killed.

Answer: Earshot

At first, all she did was itch where she'd been "infected". But, while walking down the school hallway she began hearing what people were thinking. She initially enjoyed being able to hear thoughts, but it became overwhelming and started to drive her crazy.

She did hear her mom think about having sex with Giles, twice, when they were all teen happy in "Band Candy". The episode was delayed because it involved Jonathan bringing a rifle to school in order to kill himself. It was too close to the incident of gun violence at Columbine high school, so the episode aired later in the summer, after the season finale.
11. Vampire Willow was accidentally transported to the normal reality after Anya had the human Willow help her cast a spell to find her necklace.

Answer: Doppelgangland

Anya need her necklace back because she believed it would return her powers as a vengeance demon. We later learned that it would not have done so, and only D'Hoffryn could return her powers. She tried anyway, and during the spell vampire Willow was transported from the bizzaro world of "The Wish".

She wreaked a little havoc before they sent her back just in time for Oz and Larry to push her into a pointy piece of wood. It was this episode that hinted the fact that Willow might be gay, which turned out to be true in season four.
12. Angel pretended to be Angelus in order to show Faith's betrayal and find out the mayor's plans.

Answer: Enemies

Faith tried to seduce the Angelus out of Angel, not realizing just plain old sex wouldn't work. So, the mayor used a shaman to cast a spell instead. The shaman came to Giles and told him, so he and Buffy played along with the ruse. The shaman faked taking Angel's soul, and Angel pretended to be evil in order to get info from Faith and Mayor Wilkins.

When they felt that Faith had revealed all she knew, they let her know she'd been played.
13. Buffy received a Class Protector award, presented to her by Jonathan.

Answer: The Prom

It was this episode when Buffy found out Angel planned to leave town after their impending fight with the mayor. He was leaving her so she could have a normal relationship some day, instead of a "freakshow". It was Joyce who'd asked Angel to be realistic about his relationship with her daughter. And, being a wizened man of over 240 years old, he saw that she was right. Buffy saved the prom from Tucker Wells' hellhounds, and she received the award as a collective thanks from her graduating class.
14. Buffy traded the Box of Gavrok back to the mayor in exchange for Willow.

Answer: Choices

Willow had been captured by Faith during the robbery. The gang was getting the Box of Gavrok because they knew the mayor needed it for his ascension. They got the box, which contained "about a billion" spider like creatures, but Willow became a prisoner. Buffy immediately realized a trade could be made, and after a short but lively debate, Giles made the call.

They met the mayor and Faith in the lunchroom at school and exchanged their respective items. During her time as prisoner, Willow collected some pages from the "Books of Ascension" for Giles to examine.

The mayor had a truthful commentary about Buffy and Angel's future, so it was already on his mind when Joyce came to visit him in the next episode.
15. Amy, Willow, and Buffy were set up to be burned alive, and Amy turned herself into a rat.

Answer: Gingerbread

A spell had been cast by a sneaky demon who appeared as two young dead children. The town turned against anything magical, and the girls were seen as a threat. The demon fed off of fear, and enjoyed the mob affect it created. Amy escaped the fire by turning herself into a rat.

She would stay a rat for years, despite the fact that Giles had already helped her turn Buffy from rat to human in season two. And, somehow Willow couldn't turn her back to human even though she became increasingly more powerful throughout seasons four and five.

She unknowingly turned her back into a human for a few seconds in season four. To me, the "letting Amy stay a rat" storyline was the number one most unbelievable storyline next to the test of Buffy when she turned eighteen. Neither of these made any logical sense.
