Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following actresses played Catwoman in the original "Batman" series?

Answer: Eartha Kitt

During the original run of "Batman" (1966-68 on ABC), Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt played Catwoman. But when 20th Century Fox made the motion-picture version of "Batman" in 1966, Newmar's schedule would not permit her to take part. Lee Meriwether played the slinkly feline villain in the movie.

Although she did appear in a few episodes of the series, she never played Catwoman during those appearances. (Thanks to the Internet Movie Database and tvtome.com for more information on the Catwoman character and the "Batman" series.)
2. When Gomer Pyle went to Washington, DC, to perform in the national Marine Corps benefit, what song did he sing on stage?

Answer: "Dream the Impossible Dream"

The producers of "Gomer Pyle, USMC" took every opportunity to utilize Jim Nabors's vocal talents. On a couple of episodes, he worked with Carol Burnett, who returned the favor when she landed her variety show.
3. On "The Dick Van Dyke Show" episode entitled "Big Max Calvada", who played Big Max Calvada?

Answer: Sheldon Leonard

Before becoming a producer of shows like "Dick Van Dyke" and "Gomer Pyle", Sheldon Leonard played a heavy in the movies. His turn as Big Max Calvada proved genuinely funny, as he works desperately to keep his unfunny nephew from going into show biz.
4. In what city was "Eight Is Enough" set?

Answer: Sacramento

"Eight Is Enough" was based on an autobiography by Washington newspaper columnist Tom Braden. At one time, Braden was a host of the CNN program "Crossfire".
5. Which person was the only one to carry over his/her role from "M*A*S*H" the movie to "M*A*S*H" the TV series?

Answer: Gary Burghoff

Burghoff was the only person in the movie version of "M*A*S*H" to play his character on television. He eventually left the series to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. Of the other stars listed here, only Loretta Swit was with the show during its entire 11-year run.
6. How long did the venerable western "Gunsmoke" run?

Answer: 20 years

Television's longest-running drama has CBS president William S. Paley to thank for this record. By moving the show from Saturday to Monday (and sacrificing "Gilligan's Island" in the process), "Gunsmoke" ended up running seven more seasons.
7. Who provided the voice of Rosie the Robot on the animated series "The Jetsons"?

Answer: Jean Vander Pyl

Rosie proved to be the Jetsons' best friend over the course of the series. Not only did she do the domestic duties in the household, she also helped Elroy with his homework and taught Judy the finer points of driving.
8. In television lingo, what is "share"?

Answer: The percentage of TV households tuned to a particular show (when measured against total TV households watching at that hour ).

Share does not grab the headlines as much as the much more ballyhooed TV statistic, Rating. But both are equally important in determining which shows to keep on the air and how much advertisers pay to promote their products during those shows.
9. Which of the following actors was NOT a regular player on "The Electric Company"?

Answer: Gilda Radner

Morgan Freeman, Rita Moreno and Gene Wilder were all involved with "The Electric Company", a popular PBS series, at one time during its run. Freeman ("Glory", "The Sum of All Fears") was Easy Reader; Wilder ("Blazing Saddles", "Stir Crazy") voiced the animated hero Letterman; and Moreno ("West Side Story") can be heard screaming "Hey, you guys!!" at the top of the show.
10. Which North Carolina city was the inspiration for Mayberry on "The Andy Griffith Show"

Answer: Mount Airy

The seat of Surry County in northwestern North Carolina, Mount Airy is Andy Griffith's hometown. The Mayberry legacy is very much celebrated in the city. Mount Airy is a short drive up US 52 from Pilot Mountain but is further removed from Siler City and Raleigh, which are both in the central part of the state.

The other three Mounts listed here also have some significance. Mount Holly, across the Catawba River from Charlotte, is home to numerous textile plants. Mount Olive in the eastern portion of the state is famous for its pickles. And Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River.
11. Who played Siegfried, Maxwell Smart's nemesis from KAOS, on "Get Smart"?

Answer: Bernie Kopell

KAOS represented the "bad" side of the Cold War, the Soviet Union and its eastern European satellites. CONTROL, meanwhile, reprsented the "good" side, the United States and its western allies.
12. Which venerable TV actress played the role of Miss Ellie Ewing on "Dallas" for one season?

Answer: Donna Reed

When Barbara Bel Geddes, the original Miss Ellie, had surgery after the 1983-84 season, Donna Reed stepped in to take her place. Bel Geddes returned for the 1985-86 season and remained with the show until it ended in 1991.
13. Who played the bookwormish Henry Bemis in the classic "Twilight Zone" episode, "Time Enough At Last"?

Answer: Burgess Meredith

While Henry Bemis was sitting in a bank vault during lunch, indulging in his love of reading, a nuclear blast rocked his hometown. Bemis was the sole survivor of the attack, and the town library one of the few buildings left standing. But before he can enjoy his booty, he is struck by a cruel twist of fate.
14. On the series "That's My Mama", what was Clifton Curtis's profession?

Answer: Barber

Clifton Curtis (played by Clifton Davis) took over his dad's barber shop after he died. He was content to live life as a bachelor, but his mother (played by Theresa Merritt) kept trying to fix him up. "That's My Mama" lasted almost two seasons on ABC.
15. Who played Joey Emerson, Roc's shiftless younger brother, on the TV series "Roc"?

Answer: Rocky Carroll

Joey, a musician who was more often than not out of work, was the exact opposite of Roc (Charles S. Dutton), a hard-working Baltimore sanitation worker.
16. Naval aviator Thom McKee won an amazing $312,700 on what game show?

Answer: "Tic Tac Dough"

Long before the mega-money quiz shows hit the airwaves, Thom McKee took America by storm on "Tic Tac Dough". Among his winnings were 8 automobiles, given when a person wins five games in a row. All told, McKee won 43 games before being dethroned.
17. Speaking of game shows, what is Wink Martindale's real first name?

Answer: Winston

One of the most prolific hosts in game show history, the Tennessee-born Martindale actually got his start as a radio DJ and recording artist. In addition to "Tic Tac Dough", he has hosted "Gambit", "High Rollers" and "Debt".
18. Who was scheduled to do the play-by-play for ABC of the 1989 World Series when the Loma Prieta earthquake shook San Francisco?

Answer: Al Michaels

Instead of calling a game between the A's and the Giants, Al Michaels found himself giving descriptions of the damage in San Francisco. Ted Koppel, leading the coverage in Washington, wisely deferred to Michaels and his knowledge of the Bay Area to describe the events there. ABC earned critical praise for its coverage of the disaster.
19. Who was the Sock-It-To-Me girl on "Laugh-In"?

Answer: Judy Carne

"Laugh-In" produced a lot of laughs during its successful run on NBC. Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin are probably its most famous alumni; Teresa Graves, one of only two African-Americans regulars on the show (Chelsea Brown was the other), went on to start in the crime-fighting drama "Get Christie Love" on ABC.
20. What was the name of the "Carol Burnett Show" sketch that brilliantly parodied the classic movie "Gone With The Wind"?

Answer: "Went With The Wind"

This hilarious sketch featured Carol Burnett dressing in drapes, among other things, as they paid hommage to the stately film classic. It earned "The Carol Burnett Show" a well-deserved Emmy.
