1. How did the vice president end up planning to visit the Bradfords?

Answer: Nicholas wrote a letter

Nicholas's class was instructed to write a letter to someone in the government to get an answer back as a class project. Nicholas decided to write to the vice president and asked if he could come to the Bradford house for Thanksgiving. (Nicholas said he thought that had a good chance of getting an answer.) Nicholas got a registered letter in response indicating the vice president would join the family for Thanksgiving. (The vice president would be in town for a conference.)

The normal author was going on vacation and Tom ended up being next on the list (it was by rotation). Donna, Tom's secretary, told him to look at this as an opportunity, a phrase that Tom used to explain how he looked at it when telling the family.

Nancy, Elizabeth, Tommy and Susan each bought equal shares in the car that they bought. However, the car barely ran. They had been told all the car needed was a new radiator, but David discovered everything needed to be fixed on the car. The worst problem was a cracked engine block. David mentioned that to fix that, the car would need a new engine.

David eventually did find a spot and went into the building to deliver some architectural plans... He then saw Andrea, who it turned out was the owner of the company's daughter.

Susan came home, with Harold driving the sedan and she holding a pitcher of water with a little ice in it. She explained that she wanted to get some snow to bring back to everyone, so she and Harold drove to the mountains. She then asked why the station wagon was at the other end of town.

Tom was apparently having a dispute with his garbage men, so he wrote a column about how some streets were reduced to having trash pickup once a week while other neighborhoods, like that of a city councilman, still had it picked up twice a week. Apparently a particular city councilman was under indictment for fixing the trash service, so Tom was subpoenaed so the Grand Jury could find out what he knew.

Abby's mother, Katherine, called asking Abby and Tom to come to Pasadena to see her exhibit of flowers at the Pasadena flower show. Tom didn't like the idea and came up with excuses not to go - but Abby had asked around before approaching Tom and found out he had no plans. Tom knew that Abby's father, Harry, would want to go play golf and Tom thought Harry was boring.

Tom had been writing the speech for Elizabeth's high school commencement, but found he needed some inspiration. (Apparently there was too much noise and too little inspiration at his office and at home.) Mary told Abby in this episode that Tom had gotten up early and said something about going to sit under a tree by the Sacramento River. Abby hadn't heard him go to bed as he worked so late and he got up before she did.

David played poker with some coworkers and ended up losing $327. We learn he wrote a check to cover the loss and his coworker was going to cash it on Monday. His coworkers also mentioned that they'd had another guy play with them before. This other person wrote a bad check and eventually had to leave town.

Mary was upset that the college was allowing an ROTC office on campus. She believed it was the government's war machine trying to raise the next soldiers for the next 'futile' war. Abby was doling out chores when Mary came home with news of the office's opening. When Abby didn't summon enough emotion against the ROTC, Mary confronted her. Abby seemed to be neutral on the subject. (After all, her first husband had died in Vietnam.) In the end, Mary confessed to Richard (the son of Tom's friend) that she was so anti-ROTC because her high school friend had died as the Americans were pulling out of Vietnam.

Brian was a coworker/friend of David's. One morning, Brian pulled up to the construction site on his motorcycle and was talking with David. David turned his back on Brian and when he turned around, saw Brian laying face-down in the dirt. David later explains that Brian died of a heart attack, but they had a fancy name for it when it happens to someone so young.

Vivian told the family that because she wasn't able to make it to the weddings of David and Janet and Susan and Merle, that she was taking everyone to Hawaii on a honeymoon. (Everyone else would be chaperones.)

Nicholas was joining the Boy Scouts and Tom went with him for the first meeting. At this meeting, the leader tries to get one of the fathers to volunteer to be assistant scout master while Tom kept talking under his breath. Nicholas volunteered Tom for the job. The first task as assistant scout master: go on a backpacking trip into the woods.

The sister of Abby's late husband, Frank, had died, leaving her teenage son Jeremy. Abby and Tom believed Jeremy was going to go live with his grandfather, but it turned out the grandfather was in a rest home, so Abby brought Jeremy back to Sacramento to stay with the Bradfords. Abby claimed that Jeremy's mother wore a bright yellow dress to a funeral, until her brother (Frank) told her to change... She did - into a bright red dress. His mother ended up wearing black to Abby and Frank's wedding. The part about the grandfather may contradict information form "The Bard and the Bod" where Abby brings Frank's father to meet Tom. In that episode, Abby claims to be very close to Frank's father and to be the only family he had. In this episode, Frank's "supposed" little sister dies - so how could Frank's father not have had any further family? In addition, Jeremy's grandfather is in a rest home and Abby didn't know. Frank's father should have told Abby if he was in a rest home, so is this the grandfather on Jeremy's father's side? We know Jeremy's father paid for Jeremy, but hadn't had contact since Jeremy was little.

Answer: Dr. Hammer caused Tom's high school girlfriend to break up with him

Back when he was in high school, Tom was dating a girl. They made a bet that if Tom's team won, the girl would kiss him. Well, Dr. Hammer was on the opposing team and blocked a kick, causing Tom's team to lose. And the girlfriend not only didn't kiss Tom, but broke up with him as well. Dr. Hammer was also very arrogant - he thought that the 'Sacramento' version of touch football was too loose.

Joanie was auditioning for the part of Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." She got the part - it was her first 'professional' role. The show would be performed on only one night - October 4th.

Tommy and a friend were playing with slingshots trying to knock a can off the top of a street sign. Tommy's shot ended up hitting the church window instead. No one would have known about it, but the ice cream man saw Tommy running from the church and saw the broken glass.

David wasn't working as he was joining another union in striking. As they weren't earning money, David's coworker Greg moved in together to share expenses. Joanie was the first one to meet the roommate and originally thought Greg was a thief because David didn't believe in roommates of the opposite sex. Joanie thought Greg was cute and invited him to dinner.

Elizabeth was 48 minutes late coming in, so she was grounded for 2 weeks (without any time off for good behaviour).
