Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did the Heroes and Villains tribes have Samoan tribe names?

Answer: No

This season, twenty castaways from previous "Survivor" outings returned for a shot at the million dollar prize. While normally, tribes would receive names attributed to their particular area, in this season they were simply known as 'Heroes' and 'Villains'.

The Heroes tribe wore blue while the Villains tribe wore red. They remained as separate tribes, unchanged (no swaps, no trades) until the eventual merge. The previous season was also filmed in Samoa in the same way that "Survivor: All-Stars" returned to the Pearl Islands.
2. What was true about the majority of the challenges in this season of "Survivor"?

Answer: They were derived from challenges used in prior seasons

Every single challenge from this season appeared in previous seasons of the show dating all the way back to "Survivor: Africa". At the same time, contestants in this season went all the way back to "The Australian Outback". Considering Samoa's proximity to the sea, most of the challenges used this time around not only involved well-known past events, but they also took place on the beach or in the water. Notably, this was the last season in which the contestants were allowed to play "Schmergen Brawl" (which they did on Day 12) because, like in "Survivor: Samoa", it was deemed too dangerous physically.
3. Half of the castaways appearing in this season had appeared in two earlier seasons.

Answer: False

In fact, it was just under half. Amanda, Cirie, Colby, James, Jerri, Parvati, Rob, Rupert, and Stephenie all returned from two previous seasons making this their third stint on "Survivor". Colby, Jerri, Rob, and Rupert also appeared on "Survivor: All-Stars"; Colby and Rob were both runners-up in different seasons. Of the nine doubly-returning castaways, one was a Sole Survivor (Parvati in "Fans vs. Favorites") and six made it to the final three. Amanda, Colby, Rob, and Sandra had also never been on the jury in earlier seasons.
4. Which season of "Survivor" was not represented by a castaway in "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains"?

Answer: Amazon

Although this was the twentieth season of "Survivor" and twenty castaways were brought along for the ride, only thirteen of the previous nineteen seasons were represented (and that includes "All-Stars" and the half-all-star season, "Fans vs. Favorites"). "Borneo", "Africa", "Thailand", "Amazon", "Vanuatu", and "Fiji" didn't make the cut although one from each of the first four appeared in "All-Stars" and some from the latter two appeared in "Fans Vs. Favorites".

The seasons with the most representation (excluding "All-Stars" and "Micronesia") were "China" and "Tocantins" with three each.
5. How many people joined the jury before the merge?

Answer: Two

As was typical of recent "Survivor" series up to this point, the jury would consist of more than the original seven members seen in earlier seasons. This would influence voting and tactics throughout the game. This season, with twenty-castaways involved over the thirty-nine day course, there were nine jury members and three castaways at the final Tribal Council ceremony. Because of the circumstances during the game, this meant that the merged tribe would begin with a jury of two Villains members.
6. What name did the merged tribe take on Day 25?

Answer: Yin Yang

Heading into the merge with even numbers, both the Heroes and the Villains tribes created a new tribe known as Yin Yang, aptly titled considering the juxtaposition of dark and light, and lived at the former Heroes beach. Considering the fact that all of the castaways in the game had appeared on previous seasons and done respectably in the rankings, this would not have been the first merge for any of the contestants in the game.

When they merged, the new tribe donned the colour black.
7. How many Reward Challenges were held following the tribal merge?

Answer: Two

Although many of the earlier seasons used Reward Challenges to fuel politics and give the winners a break from the drudgery of later days in the competition, this season only had two Individual Rewards-- one on Day 28 and the other on Day 34. In each case, three people participated in the reward and no one won more than once.

The first reward was an overnight stay on another, more luxurious island for a movie viewing while the second was a lunch and visit with a loved one while visiting a local natural wonder.
8. Which castaway won the most Individual Immunity Challenges?

Answer: Parvati

Parvati won three of the seven Immunity Challenges during this season while Russell won two and Danielle and Jerri both won one each. In "Fans vs. Favorites", Parvati only won one Immunity Challenge while Jerri had never won one before. Danielle had won one in "Exile Island" and Russell won one in "Samoa". Parvati's streak of immunities propelled her directly towards the end of the game; she also participated in the second reward.
9. Over the course of the season, how many Hidden Immunity Idols were used to negate votes against a player?

Answer: Four

With the most uses to date, the Hidden Immunity Idol accounted for four negations throughout the course of this game. In two of these cases the negation broke people out of tie votes and in another, it saved someone from being voted out entirely. The Hidden Idols were used by Parvati, Tom, Jerri, and Sandra; the former two before the merge and the latter two after it.

These useful tools helped the Villains tribe retain power after the merge and ultimately led them to a final four of Villains. This is ironic since one of the idols was literally given to one of the Villains before the merge.
10. Who was the Sole Survivor of this twentieth season?

Answer: Sandra

In the final Tribal Council, three final castaways faced a nine-person jury in a battle to earn a million dollars. For Sandra and Parvati, it would be their second million; for Russell, it would be his second shot in the finals. Once again, Sandra won the game with six votes to Parvati's three and Russell's zero.

This was the second time Russell lost in the finals. Sandra received votes from Colby, Rupert, Candice, Amanda, J.T., and Courtney while Parvati received hers from Jerri, Danielle, and Coach. Russell would later return for "Survivor: Redemption Island" (though he wouldn't make it too far).
