Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many castaways joined this season of "Survivor"?

Answer: Eighteen

Participants arrived on the beaches of Nicaragua at the start of the game and were immediately split into their two respective tribes-- Ometepe, sporting orange buffs, and Zapatera, sporting purple. While previous recent series split survivors out based on previous roles and by age, this season had no distinctive split besides the numbers.

The names 'Zapatera' and 'Ometepe' are both the names of volcanos found in Nicaragua.
2. How many castaways from previous seasons returned as tribemates in this season?

Answer: Two

While sixteen castaways were split into teams at the start of this game, they were surprised by the return of two former heavy-hitters, Rob Mariano and Russell Hantz, both of whom previously appeared in "Heroes vs. Villains" (both as villains) and had, in seasons prior, reached the finals but never won.

They drew buffs to split out between the two teams-- Rob to Ometepe and Russell to Zapatera-- and filled out two tribes of nine.
3. Hidden Immunity Idols were found on both teams within the first week of play. Were both used in the first week?

Answer: No

Due to the schedule of Tribal Councils, this wasn't possible-- Zapatera never arrived at its first Tribal Council until Day 8 (though their Hidden Immunity Idol, found by Ralph, wasn't used until later). On Ometepe, Kristina located the hidden idol on Day 3 without needing clues, but opted to show Phillip and Francesca.

The topic came up at the very first Tribal Council during which Rob forced her to reveal it to him (even placing it in his hand). She used it on Day 5 to negate two votes against her-- a useless gesture spurned from paranoia-- and she was eliminated on Day 11 at the very next Ometepe Tribal Council.

The second idol-- found by Ralph on Zapatera-- was located on Day 4.
4. Who was the first castaway to return to the game from Redemption Island?

Answer: Matt

Day 19 changed the game. Tribes went en masse to Redemption Island Arena to witness a duel between Matt and Sarita that would ultimately decide if someone would return to the game. This competition, which involved outlasting their competitor on a pair of balance walls, was ultimately won by Matt, who was eliminated by Ometepe on Day 5.

He would co on to be eliminated-- again-- two days later at the very next Tribal Council.
5. What name did the combined tribe take on when they merged?

Answer: Murlonio

When both tribes made their way to Redemption Island on Day 19, all tribemates witnessed Matt's return to the game. Immediately after, Jeff announced that all castaways would be merged from that point, uniting on a new beach as twelve tribemates (six from Ometepe, five from Zapatera, and one from Redemption Island).

The team name came from a suggestion from Rob who claimed 'Murlonio' was a Spanish word; it was not-- it was made up.
6. On Day 30, the tribe was surprised by which of these twists in the game?

Answer: A double elimination

On their Immunity Challenge on Day 30, the Murlonio tribe received a wrapped 'twist' that they wouldn't be able to open until a point later in the game. That point ended up being after the vote at Tribal Council that evening. After the tribe voted out Ralph, they opened the package to find a set of cards that they would be able to use in the next Immunity Challenge, right then and there, that would determine an immunity winner and result in another Tribal Council vote. Rob won immunity while Steve, the final Zapatera tribe member, was sent to Redemption Island (leaving the original Ometepe Six).
7. Ultimately, how many times was a Hidden Immunity Idol used at Tribal Council?

Answer: Three

Immunity Idols were rehidden throughout the game, so while Kristina located the idol on Day 3 and Ralph found the other on Day 5, the Ometepe Idol went back into the field after Kristina used hers. Rob located the clue after a notable reward win and then scouted it out on Day 10.
All three instances were used (and none of them were removed due to a blindside). Kristina used hers on Day 6, Ralph used his on Mike on Day 21 (though no votes were cast against him), and Rob used his to negate a single vote on Day 37, the last possible opportunity at which he could use the advantage.
8. All Reward Challenges were also Immunity Challenges.

Answer: False

Not every challenge was a Reward Challenge, but every instance in which the tribes played for Reward, they were also playing for immunity. The combo challenges were intentional. With the introduction of Redemption Island battles, the additional challenge type would have overstuffed the challenge cycles.

There were ten Reward Challenges in this season of the show, most of which were held when the tribes were still split. There was a single exception-- while the tribe never played for the reward on Day 31, the Redemption Island castaways did.

A visit from loved ones was the penultimate reward of the season.
9. Over the course of the season, who won the most Redemption Island duels?

Answer: Matt

Ultimately, Matt participated in every single duel of the competition, winning six duels in his first run (between Day 7 and 19) and then four more in his second run (leading to Day 37). As a result, Matt won ten duels of eleven, losing on the last one to Andrea, who was allowed to re-enter the game in the final five. Matt ended up spending thirty-seven days competing in the game, but thirty of those days were on Redemption Island; he spent seven days in the actual competition. As per usual, the reunion episode featured a 'Sprint Player of the Season'; Matt came in second place for his troubles.
10. Which castaway won "Survivor: Redemption Island"?

Answer: Rob

In the end, after all of the redemptions and all of the votes, the final three ended up consisting of Rob, Phillip, and Natalie, all of whom came from the original Ometepe grouping. Sitting in front of the jury on Day 39, each made their case for the million dollars and it was decided, with eight votes, that Boston Rob would take the prize after his fourth season in the game (after "Marquesas", "All-Stars", and "Heroes vs. Villains"). Phillip and Natalie too one and zero votes, respectively, as they were described as antagonizing and accused of riding on Rob's coattails. Rob also won the 'Sprint Player of the Season' award, taking an additional $100,000 for being the fan favourite.
