Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Frontier Doctor" - Who was the frontier doctor played by Rex Allen, a veteran of movie singing cowboys?

Answer: Dr. Bill Baxter

This series lasted only one season since Allen's popularity as a movie cowboy did not go over so well when he portrayed Dr. Bill Baxter. This is one of the very few series that only had one main character. Sheriff Brawley, played by Stafford Repp, appeared occasionally. Sheriff Ed Wilson appeared in one episode.
2. "Buckskin" - Annie O'Connell ran a boarding house with her 10 year old boy. What was his name?

Answer: Jody

This is another one season series. It is the story of the West as seen by a 10 year old named Jody. Each episode saw different travelers as they passed through the town rather than concentrating on just the residents. The series just didn't appeal to hard-core western fans.
3. "Sugarfoot" - The name refers to the lawyer who got a law degree by correspondence and headed west. What was the name of this character played by Will Hutchins?

Answer: Tom Brewster

Toothy Thompson (Jack Elam) was his sidekick and Brewster used brains instead of the usual brawn to outwit the 'baddies'. This series was tailored to Will Hutchins after he was put under contract to Warner Bros. Kurt Russell got his start in the opening episode. This show aired every third week, alternating with "Cheyenne" and "Bronco".
4. "Have Gun, Will Travel" - "Hey Boy" was the Chinese cook and valet of the man whose business card was the title of this series. Who was he?

Answer: Paladin

Paladin, whose first name was never revealed, was an elegant hero who lived in luxury in a San Francisco hotel, smoked expensive cigars, and enjoyed fine food and brandy. Sharply dressed western heroes spawned "Wyatt Earp" and "Bat Masterson". This is another series that would be considered "politically incorrect" in today's environment.

The word 'paladin' means 'vigilante protector'. Richard Boone, who played Paladin, is a descendant of Daniel Boone.
5. "Range Rider" - Range Rider, obviously, was the lead character. Who was his sidekick?

Answer: Dick West

Jock Mahoney, who played Range Rider, went on to star in "Yancy Derringer". Dick Jones, playing Dick West, also enjoined future TV stardom in "Buffalo Bill Jr.". Running 3 seasons from '51-'53, it was mainly for kids with the hero and West playing fair, doing good deeds, and never killing a person who didn't shoot at them first.
6. "The Rifleman" - He was Lucas McCain and this series was the first to feature a widowed man raising his son. What was his son's name?

Answer: Mark

The series was set in North Fork, New Mexico in the 1880s and Lucas and Mark came there to try and successfully homestead his ranch. He had a modified Winchester that could fire 8 shots in 2.5 seconds and it was used to help out the town marshal with its myriad of unsavory characters. Leonid Brezhnev on a visit to the states, said he only wanted to meet one famous American, Chuck Connors.

Many sites are devoted to this popular series.
7. "Steve Donovan, Western Marshal" aka "Western Marshal" aka "Steve Donovan, Western Ranger" - Who was the deputy marshal on this show?

Answer: Rusty Lee

This series is notable for emulating the B-westerns of the big screen. It gasped through one season in 1955-56 and was set in Wyoming in the 1870s. Douglas Kennedy and Eddy Waller, as Rusty Lee, were the 2 leads. There is much confusion with the order of the episodes since they were released in a haphazard manner. However, it did reach the top 10 in many TV markets.
8. "Rawhide" - During the first 7 of 8 seasons ('59-66) Gil Favor was the trail boss and when Eric Fleming left the show, his replacement was the ramrod played by Clint Eastwood. What was the name of Clint's character?

Answer: Rowdy Yates

Clint was good old Rowdy Yates who was driving cattle to market across the wild west. Gil Favor seemed to favor Wrangler jeans in this western set around 1860 but they weren't sold until 1947, Oops! Clint got his first break in TV on this show but, as of 2012, was never seen again on TV, not even as a guest star.

Sheb Wooley, who serenaded us in later years with "Purple People Eater", played Pete Nolan.
9. "Tombstone Territory" - In "the town to tough to die", Pat Conway played Sheriff Clay Hollister. Who was the only other regular on the series?

Answer: Harris Clayton Claibourne

Harris Clayton Claibourne was the editor of the Tombstone Epitaph, the other series regular, as well as the narrator of the show. Charlie Riggs was his deputy, as was Quint, Lee and others only known as Deputy. None of the real characters like Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp or the OK Corral gangs from Tombstone ever appeared. The series ran from '57 to '59.
10. "Hopalong Cassidy" - William Boyd played the title role in this series. What was his nickname?

Answer: Hoppy

This was a gimme for having to put up with my insane questions from TV shows that most under 50 have never heard about or seen. Boyd was the only person to play Hoppy in the movies, TV and on radio. He got his name hop-a-long from being shot in the leg and his favorite drink was sasparilla.

This was the first network western series. You can't visit Hoppyland in Venice, CA because it only lasted from '51-'54.
