Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams commenced "The Amazing Race 17" in which American state?

Answer: Massachusetts

Beginning this seventeenth race around the world, teams were given the "go" at the Eastern Point Yacht Club in Gloucester, Massachusetts. This was the first race to leave in a city other than Los Angeles in about six seasons. This time, teams were told that the first person to reach the Pit Stop in this starting leg would receive a new prize that would benefit them later on in the race.

This mechanic, known as the 'Express Pass', would allow the leading team to skip any one task during the first eight legs of the race to their liking. Of course, that would all come later- the eleven teams headed on their way to their first destination across the ocean.
2. To which country were teams told to fly in the first leg of the race?

Answer: England

Teams heading out from the starting line on the Massachusetts coast were told to fly to London, England on one of only two flights heading over the Atlantic that evening. Upon their arrival, teams needed to drive themselves through the confusing city streets and then southwest to the world-famous Stonehenge, the first route marker for their race.

This proves to be one of the more difficult tasks of the race because not only do teams have to navigate the streets of Britain on the wrong side of the road, but they have to drive with gearshifts.
3. To reach one of the destinations in Leg 1, teams needed to solve a riddle asking for the opposite of which of these terms?

Answer: Nor'easter

Arriving at Stonehenge, teams needed to solve the riddle asking "what is the opposite of a nor'easter" to determine the location of their next clue box. This would lead teams to the picturesque Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, England. Once teams arrived they needed to climb to the top of the castle by ascending a ladder on the side of its wall.

At the top they needed to collect a flag to deliver to a knight standing across the moat of the castle to receive their next set of instructions.
4. During the first Road Block task of the race in Leg 1, which team member was notoriously smacked in the face with a watermelon?

Answer: Claire

The next task completed was the first Road Block task of the race. For this one, one member of each team needed to head to a clearing and use a ballista to fire a watermelon at a suit of armour. This would prove to be quite interesting as Claire (or Brook and Claire) who would take one rogue watermelon to the face. Thomas, Claire, Nat, Rachel, Connor, Chad, Gary, Kevin, Jenna, Nick, and Ron completed this Road Block task before heading to the next destination, the Pit Stop for this leg of the race.
5. Which team was eliminated in the first leg of the race?

Answer: Ron and Tony

In the end of the leg, teams raced across the grounds of Eastnor Castle to their first Pit Stop and Jill and Thomas became the first place team. Both arrived and claimed the Express Pass, the first to ever appear on the race. Soon, other teams checked in and completed the leg. Finally, it was Ron and Tony, who spent most of their day driving and getting lost in England, who couldn't make up the time necessary to catch up to the other teams.

They became the first team eliminated from the race.
6. In Leg 2, teams were told to fly to the capital city of Ghana. Which city is this?

Answer: Accra

In the beginning of Leg 2, teams opened their clues at Eastnor Castle and were told to head to the airport to catch a flight to the city of Accra, Ghana. Because of a lack of flights to Western Africa, all ten remaining teams ended up taking the same flight from Heathrow in London to the city of Accra. Once they arrived, teams needed to hop into some taxis and reach a statue at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park to locate their next clue box.
7. In Ghana in Leg 2, team members needed to sell which items during the Road Block?

Answer: Sunglasses

Upon finding the memorial specified in their clues, teams were told to hop back into their taxis to locate the Makola Market in Accra. Here, one by one, teams arrived to find a Road Block task in which one member needed to be selected to do some 'shady dealings'.

In this task, the selected teammate needed to take a board full of sunglasses and sell them to local market shoppers at a minimum of three cedis each to receive a total of fifteen cedis. Once they traded this money in they could claim their next clue. Nick, Brook, Jill, Chad, Rachel, Michael, Kat, Connor, Jenna, and Mallory took on this task.
8. During the Detour task in Leg 2, which team completed the 'Tune In' task in Ghana?

Answer: Nick and Vicki

After the Road Block, teams were told to take a taxi to their next destination across the city of Accra to the Peace Motor Spare Parts stall in Teshie. Here, teams found a Detour task waiting for them. In this one, teams chose between either 'Tune In' or 'Check Out'.

In the 'Tune In' task, teams needed to take the appropriate materials provided for them and venture into the nearby houses to find one of the marked homes. Here, they needed to successfully install an antenna on the roof to allow for TV reception to feed into the house. Brook and Claire, Chad and Stephanie, Kevin and Michael, Nick and Vicki, Gary and Mallory, and Nat and Kat finished this one.
9. What did teams need to transport in the 'Check Out' Detour task in Ghana in Leg 2?

Answer: Coffins

In the 'Check Out' Detour task, teams needed to head to a nearby woodworking shop to pick up one of a number of kooky coffins (odd choice of phrasing, but completely apt). Then, both members needed to wheel the coffin through the neighbourhood to a showroom known as 'Hello Coffin' (odd name) where they would be able to claim their next clue upon delivery. Katie and Rachel, Jill and Thomas, Jonathan and Connor, Nat and Kat, and Andie and Jenna completed this rather odd task.
10. Which team was eliminated in Ghana in Leg 2?

Answer: Andie and Jenna

In the end of Leg 2, teams were told to take a taxi to one of Western Africa's largest, busiest marketplaces, Kaneshie Market, where they would find Phil, the Pit Stop mat, and a woman carrying a large basin of fish on her head (have to note the oddity). Brook and Claire pulled through to claim a first place win in this leg and they both earned themselves a trip for two to Hawaii from Travelocity.

As teams waded through the crowds of the market it was Andie and Jenna who failed to avoid last place.

They became the second team eliminated from the race.
