Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams starting Leg 9 were told to depart for Malawi, heading out from which country?

Answer: Zambia

The final five teams were brought to Avani Victoria Falls Resort in Zambia to start their ninth leg of the race, and when they did they opened clues telling them to head to the airport to fly to the nation of Malawi. To do this, they needed to catch a flight from Livingstone (near Victoria Falls) to the Malawian capital, Lilongwe, and head into the city to find a local market.

There was a catch, however, as Beau would be waiting for teams upon their arrival in the new country.
2. In Leg 9, teams were forced to vote on a U-Turn. Which team fell victim to this?

Answer: Tim and Rod

Upon arriving in Lilongwe, teams were met outside the airport and told that they would need to vote for one other team to be U-Turned, forcing them to complete both sides of the Detour upon arriving at that point in the race. While Tim and Rod voted for Tom and Tyler, all of the other teams, allied, voted for Tim and Rod.
When the vote was done, teams located a clue in Mgona Market where they needed to shell and winnow five kilograms of Malawian peanuts to receive their next clue.
3. In the Leg 9 Detour (in Malawi), more teams completed which Detour option?

Answer: 'Stack'

Completing the peanut challenge, teams had to head to another market in the town of Chezi.
There, they could complete either 'Stack' or 'Stitch' (or both!). In 'Stack', teams had to pack bags with charcoal via local methods, then carry the bags to a local vendor. In 'Stitch', the teams instead needed to join a tailor and sew together two shirts using sewing machines powered by a foot pedal. Viv and Joey intentionally went for 'Stitch' while the other teams went with 'Stack' (and Tim and Rod did both for the U-Turn).
4. In Leg 9 (in Malawi), teams had to solve a puzzle. Where were the pieces?

Answer: In Lake Malawi

Completing the Detour in Leg 9, teams hit a brick wall. Heading out into Salima District, teams had to find a marked brickmaking area and mould fifty clay bricks to the approval of a local builder. Getting dirty and completing this allowed teams to take a drive to Lake Malawi and the Kumbali Lake Retreat in Mphere.

There, teams had to receive instructions as to where they could find puzzle pieces, but those instructions would be communicated verbally in the local Chichewa language. Teams could translate the language using a blackboard of helpful words, find their pieces in the lake, and construct a statue with them to get their next clue.
5. Which team was last to step on the Pit Stop in Malawi in Leg 9?

Answer: Viv and Joey

Completing the puzzle on the shores of Lake Malawi, teams then needed to race on foot to the nearby Lifuwu Village where they could check into the next Pit Stop. Tom and Tyler ended up landing on the mat first, once again winning the leg; it was the seventh time they ended up winning a leg, and their third in a row on their streak.

Despite a U-Turn in play during this leg of the race, it was Viv and Joey who fell to last during the last few task of this leg and they landed on the mat for the final non-elimination and allowed to race again.
6. Leaving the ninth Pit Stop early in the morning, one of the five teams starting Leg 10 faced a Speed Bump. This extra task involved cooking breakfast.

Answer: False

Opening their first clue on the shores of Lake Malawi, teams were told to cross Leopard Bay by hopping into and paddling a traditional Malawian dugout canoe one kilometre to Lifuwu Village, the site of their previous Pit Stop. Because they placed last in the previous leg of the race, Viv and Joey were required to bail water out of their filled dugout canoes. Too heavy to tip, the canoes ended up needing to be emptied with small containers.

The next clue ended up being found along the shoreline.
7. How many teams completed the 'Dirty' Detour task in Malawi in Leg 10?

Answer: Three

Reaching Lifuwu Village, teams opened up their Detour task for Leg 10 receiving a choice between 'Dirty' and 'Smelly'. In 'Dirty', teams had to join villagers in doing a heaping load of laundry on the shores of Lake Malawi. Once they washed thirty items of clothing and left them out to dry, they'd get their clue.

In 'Smelly', teams carried a bucket of fish to nearby drying tables to be left out in the sun to dry. Teams selecting this task also had to sort the fish as they found them (and there would be three types caught).
8. In Leg 10, team members needed to work with a local cobbler for the Road Block, creating sandals out of which of these unique items?

Answer: Tyres

After completing their Detour task, teams needed to hitch a ride back to the Malawian capital city, Lilongwe, where they needed to stop off at the Lizulu Market for a Road Block. For this challenge, one team member needed to engage with a local recycling process and use rubber tubing and old tyre pieces to make sandals from scratch. If they could make two pairs of sandals, the cobbler would give them their next clue. Tim, Tyler, Nick, Jerome, and Joey were selected for this task.
9. Each question answered incorrectly during the quiz found in Leg 10 (in Malawi) resulted in a time penalty of how long?

Answer: One minute

After tyring out during their Road Block, teams were instructed to make their way through Lizulu Market to the Nsapato Section where they would be able to listen for their next clue being stated through a megaphone. This sent them to the nearby establishment known as Harry's Bar where every team member had to, individually, complete a ten question quiz about the race. Each question pertained to a different team to have run throughout the course. If teams answered a question incorrectly they would receive a one minute time penalty before checking into the next Pit Stop. Upon completion of the quiz, teams also had to learn a local song and perform it onstage to proceed.
10. Which team was eliminated in Malawi at the end of Leg 10?

Answer: Femi and Nick

Completing the final task onstage at Harry's Bar, teams were given a clue directing them to their tenth Pit Stop of the race on the grounds of Kumbali Lodge; the mat would be next to the banana trees there. Viv and Joey were the first team to land on the mat, but because they ended up taking a thirteen minute time penalty for the quiz, Tom and Tyler ended up overtaking them (having taken only eight minutes of time penalty).

It allowed them to check in in first place for the eighth time. Femi and Nick ended up being the last to arrive, penalties aside, and they were eliminated in fifth place.
