Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in Ontario was the starting line for "The Amazing Race Canada's" first season?

Answer: Niagara Falls

To commence the first-ever leg of "The Amazing Race Canada", nine teams were sent up the Niagara River towards the world-famous Niagara Falls and the start line at the Oakes Garden Theatre Park overlooking the natural wonder. Informed that the winners of this first leg would receive two Express Passes (one for themselves and one for another team), they were wished a safe trip and sent on their way to their first clue, waiting on their luggage further along the path. For their first task, teams were told to drive themselves (in a new Chevrolet Spark) to the Niagara Falls Butterfly Conservatory where they would find the first route marker.
2. During their first leg of the race, the teams secured tickets on flights inevitably taking them to which B.C. city?

Answer: Kelowna

Arriving at the Butterfly Conservatory, teams headed inside to locate one of nine different boxes, each containing some sort of live creature-- some deadly and some harmless. In each box were two clues, each containing a voucher for tickets flying through Vancouver, B.C. to Kelowna. Teams had to stick their hands inside to claim the clue, one per member, and the more dangerous the creature inside, the better the flight they would be booked on. Four teams took the first flight; five teams took the second. Upon arriving in Kelowna that night, teams had to drive to the Blue Bear, a statue outside Kelowna City Hall, to find an Interac van containing their next clue.
3. In Leg 1, team members completing the first Road block of the race had to dive underwater to find a statue of what famous B.C. 'legend'?

Answer: Ogopogo

After finding the Blue Bear, teams needed to pull numbers for their next task at the Lakefront Water Sports Kiosk in Kelowna. The following morning they received their Road Block task requiring that both team members take a sea-doo and follow a rudimentary map to a diving station where the selected team member would don diving equipment and sink into Lake Okanagan to find a statue of Ogopogo, a Loch-Ness-Monster-type creature found in the depths. Once the team member found the clue tethered to the statue they could surface and return to shore. Brett, Darren, Hal, Dave, Tim Jr., Vanessa, Cory, Jamie, and Tennille completed this first task.
4. A second Road Block task was featured in British Columbia during the first leg of the race.

Answer: True

After diving into Lake Okanagan, teams were told to drive out of Kelowna and into the B.C. wilderness, stopping off at Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park, specifically the train trestles in Myra Canyon. Once there, teams found the route marker containing a second Road Block task which had to be completed by the team member who sat out during the first Road Block challenge. For this task, the team member had to descend down a ladder on the side of the trestle and, despite the height, walk a narrow plank to collect their clue.

At the end, they had to jump down to the ground, a relatively modest bungee. Kristen, Holly, Joanne, Jet, Tim Sr., Celina, Jody, Treena, and Pierre finished the task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Leg 1 in British Columbia?

Answer: Treena and Tennille

After their second Road Block task, teams headed to their first Pit Stop of the race, the Quails' Gate Winery in the Okanagan Highlands outside Kelowna, B.C. The first team to arrive, by a hair, was Kristen and Darren; the hippie duo won themselves both Express Passes as well as a trip for two to Sydney, Australia courtesy of Air Canada.

In the end, two teams received penalties, both for not collecting both clues at the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls. Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. waited out their half hour, dropping to sixth, but it was Treena and Tennille who felt the brunt of the penalty; they dropped from eighth to ninth place and were the first team eliminated from the race.
6. In the beginning of Leg 2, teams were told to fly directly to what coastal B.C. city for the rest of the leg?

Answer: Vancouver

Opening clues early in the morning at the Quails' Gate Winery on the shores of Lake Okanagan, teams were told to take a taxi to the airport and catch a flight to Vancouver, B.C., one of the westernmost cities of Canada and the host of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Upon their arrival in this livable city, teams needed to run through the Vancouver International Airport to locate the Maple Leaf Lounge to locate their next clue.
7. The Road Block encountered in Leg 2 asked team members to don which of the following pieces of sporting equipment?

Answer: Speed skates

After locating the Maple Leaf Lounge, teams were told to make their way to the Richmond Oval, one of the many venues used for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games found in the heart of Vancouver. After taking the train into the city, teams found a route marker containing their Road Block clue inside. For this task, teams had to ask 'Who's skating on thin ice?', and the chosen member had to skate a lap of the Richmond Oval in clapskates in under one minute thirty seconds. Brett, Jet, Hal, Kristen, Tim Jr., Cory, Vanessa, and Jamie completed the lap for their teams.
8. During the Detour of Leg 2, teams could 'Draw It' or 'Dance It'. Both involved aspects of which Asian culture?

Answer: Chinese

After the Road Block, teams took taxis to the Millennium Gate, the entrance to Vancouver's Chinatown. Once there, they found the first Detour of the race, a choice between 'Draw It' and 'Dance It'. In 'Draw It', completed by Brett and Holly, Hal and Joanne, Jody and Cory, Vanessa and Celina, Tim Jr. and Tim Sr., and Jet and Dave, teams first had to go to the Ten Rens Tea and Ginseng Company in Chinatown and drink one cup of tea. Once this was done they could flip the cup and memorize a symbol of the Chinese zodiac. With this in their minds they had to run to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and draw the character on rice paper with a tapered brush. Once both members correctly drew their symbol they could continue on.

In 'Dance It', teams headed to a Chinese Cultural Center and received a list (written in Mandarin) of locations where they could pick up four different parts of a Chinese dragon costume. Once they returned with it, they could put it on and perform a dragon dance for their next clue. Kristen and Darren and Jamie and Pierre finished this task.
9. To locate the second Pit Stop of the race, teams had to ascend to the top of which of these to search?

Answer: Shipping crane

After the Detour, teams were instructed to make their way by taxi to DP World on the harbourfront. Once there, they had to climb to the top of a 250 ft-tall shipping crane in the shipping yard and use a pair of binoculars to locate their next Pit Stop.

The Pit Stop atop the Vancouver Convention Centre would be signified by two large banner flags depicting the race colours, and teams would have to descend the tower and take a taxi there right after.
10. Which team was eliminated in British Columbia at the end of Leg 2?

Answer: Jamie and Pierre

After locating their Pit Stop on the Vancouver Waterfront, teams took their taxis to the Vancouver Convention Centre and made their way through the building to the country's six acre living roof to step on the Pit Stop mat. Here, front-runners Holly and Dave were the first team to arrive, securing a vacation for two to any location in Asia courtesy of Air Canada.

Although many teams dropped in the rankings due to poor taxis and bad Detour choices, it was Jamie and Pierre who remained in eighth and last place due to a late flight out of Kelowna.

They were the second team eliminated from the race.
