Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many teams completed the 'Igloo Builder' Detour task in Nunavut in Leg 7?

Answer: None

In Leg 7, teams departed from Avenue Saint-Denis in Quebec City and were told to catch a series of planes taking them all the way up north to Iqaluit, Nunavut, the capital city of Canada's largest territory. Once there they found their next clue at Iqaluit Airport and needed to have a local read the Inuktitut on the page they received.

This forced them to take taxis to Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park where, on foot, they had to find two throat-singers holding their Detour clue. Although two teams attempted the 'Igloo Builder' task, all five teams ended up finishing the other option.
2. During the 'Harpoon Hunter' Detour task in Leg 7 (in Nunavut), teams had to hit which of these with a harpoon?

Answer: Stationary target

During the Detour, teams needed to trudge into the tundra and complete either 'Harpoon Hunter' or 'Igloo Builder'. Although Brett and Holly and Jet and Dave opted for the latter, constructing a working igloo, they joined the others completing 'Harpoon Hunter', which required that one team member pull their partner in a sled across the snow to a harpoon-throwing station then, when both hit the target, the other had to make the return trip. All five teams inevitably did this.
3. In Leg 7, what team had to complete a Speed Bump task in the northern tundra?

Answer: Tim Sr. and Tim Jr.

Upon completing the Detour and returning their sleds, the racers had to climb the side of a large, snowy hill, and traverse an icy path to Frobisher Bay. Here, Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. were forced to complete the second Speed Bump of the race since they placed last in the Quebec City leg. For this task they had to take a team of sled dogs across the bay to locate a cache of food, then return it to their starting point.

When this was done they could continue on with the regular sequence of tasks.
4. During Leg 7 (in Nunavut), teams had to eat muktuk, the blubber of which of these animals?

Answer: Whale

Finding snowmobiles on Frobisher Bay, the teams were told to ride them directly to the Hudson Bay Trading Post outside of Iqaluit. Here, teams located the Road Block task, an eating challenge in which one member of each pair needed to suppress their gag reflex enough to eat the chewy Inuit snack muktuk-- whale blubber and skin. Once they ate ten pieces without bringing it back up (during the task) they could continue on with the leg, heading to the Pit Stop. Jody, Tim Sr., Celina, Jet, and Brett completed the task.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in Nunavut in Leg 7?

Answer: Brett and Holly

After the Road Block, the teams were told to race on foot, one kilometer northwest through the Nunavut tundra (and up a hillside) to an outlook atop the Canadian arctic where they would find their seventh Pit Stop in a race across Canada. Jody and Cory, despite Cory's prosthetic legs, accomplished a first place victory (their first), winning two plane tickets (courtesy of Air Canada) to the Caribbean.

In the end, Brett and Holly were unable to catch up from their poor Detour showing and they were eliminated in fifth place.
6. In Leg 8, teams flew into what Nova Scotian city?

Answer: Halifax

Starting Leg 8 in snowy Iqaluit, teams were told to catch the next flight (which turned out to be a series of flights) to Halifax, the capital city of Nova Scotia. Once they landed they needed to head to the roof of a nearby parking garage to find their manual Chevy Sonic vehicles.

Inside was their next clue containing a USB stick which, when plugged into a port in the glove compartment, would give their next clue sending them to historic Pier 21 in Halifax.
7. During the Road Block in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia in Leg 8, teams had to recreate which of these?

Answer: A scarecrow

After spending the night at Pier 21 and then collecting their next clue in the morning from immigration officers (after filling a passport book with stamps found around the museum), teams were told to drive onward to Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia to find their Road Block task for Leg 8.

In this unique town, known for its Scarecrow Festival, the selected team member needed to use a Blackberry device to match a picture to a scarecrow in town, bring it back to a gazebo, and make a twin for it out of a pile of clothing and supplies. Once they took a picture of their properly-made twin scarecrow they could continue on. Jet, Jody, Tim Jr., and Vanessa completed this one.
8. In Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in Leg 8, teams completed a Detour task involving either local lobsters or which other food item?

Answer: Sausage

After the Road Block, teams needed to drive to the historic town of Lunenburg on the Atlantic Coast. Once there, at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, the teams found their Detour task for this leg. Teams choosing 'Surf', Jody and Cory and Jet and Dave, needed to head out onto the open sea and collect six lobster traps, emptying them out, binding the claws of their catches, and return them to land to deliver them to a local restaurant. Teams choosing 'Turf', Tim Sr. and Tim Jr. and Vanessa and Celina, needed to go to a local hotel, memorize the names of twelve German sausages (a local favourite), and then link them to their matching sausages a short distance away.
9. Did any teams use the Double U-Turn in Leg 8 (in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia)?

Answer: No

After the Detour, teams needed to head back to their cars and drive through Lunenburg to find St. John's Anglican Church. Once inside they ended up finding the second of only two Double U-Turns in the race. Although many had the opportunity to use the race mechanic it was left alone by all four teams.

After passing through, the teams received a box containing their next clue-- a single Canadian dime featuring their next Pit Stop on the front.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the Pit Stop in Nova Scotia in Leg 8?

Answer: Vanessa and Celina

Receiving their Canadian dimes, the teams had to glean that their next Pit Stop could be found in front of the moored Bluenose II ship in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. Once teams found the dry dock they would find Jon and the mat. Jody and Cory ended up winning their second leg in a row, this time taking with them a trip for two to South America from Air Canada. Vanessa and Celina, who worked well to complete their tasks, were marred by their car; neither could drive manually. Luckily for them, and all of the other teams, the leg continued immediately into the ninth leg of the race, onward to another province.
