Answer: Howard's t-shirt

Irene Fairchild takes over Howard's old office in the Mayberry County Building after Howard moves to larger office. The nurse discovers Howard's t-shirt in a file cabinet that was once his. Embarrassed, Howard explains that he had taken off the shirt on a particularly hot day. What a wildman!

3. A running theme in Howard stories is his meddling mother. In the episode entitled "The Lodge", Andy invites Howard to join the Mayberry Men's Lodge. Howard's mother engages Goober as a useful idiot to prevent Howard's membership. What reason does Mrs. Sprague give Goober to blackball her son?

Answer: Howard's father became addicted to gambling and Howard will, too

The end of the episode shows that perhaps momma Sprague was right. Howard expresses a desire to continue playing cards while all the other players seem utterly exhausted and want to call it a night.
4. In two Howard-heavy episodes, our mustachioed hero shows an unexpected prowess in sports. In the episode "Big Fish in a Small Town", Howard manages to catch the elusive carp, Old Sam. But instead of awe, Howard is met with aloofness from his fellow anglers. Why are the denizens of Mayberry unhappy with Howard?

The episode ends on a happy note after Howard has a change of heart. He rescinds his donation and releases Old Sam back in the lake where he was caught, finally earning respect from the others.
5. In our second sports episode, entitled "Howard, the Bowler", Howard is reluctantly asked to be a member of Emmet's bowling team. To the surprise of all, Howard is on his way to bowling a perfect game. What interrupts the final frame?

Answer: A power outage

Howard does end up bowling a perfect game the next day but only after a bet made by Goober, Emmet and Andy is called off. Since his teammates would have won the cancelled bet, their disappointment overshadows Howard's accomplishment.
6. Yet another facet of the incredible Howard Sprague is shown in "Howard, the Comedian". In this episode, the usually reserved Howard finds himself appearing on Colonel Tim's Amateur Hour. Here, he slays the TV audience with tales about his home-spun Mayberry pals. What spoils the success of Howard's TV appearance?

Answer: Howard's jokes insult Clara, Aunt Bee and Floyd the barber

The episode is resolved happily due the attention the offended parties receive as a result of being mentioned on TV. The shallow Floyd, Aunt Bee and Clara revel in their new found "fame".
7. In the most startling of all Howard-centered shows, Howard impulsively quits his job! Upon deciding that the life of a county clerk is dull and meaningless Howard announces his shocking decision to do what?

Answer: Move to the Caribbean island of St. Benedict's

Howard quickly becomes bored with living in "paradise". After a humorous dream sequence, he moves back to Mayberry. With his former job still available, Howard learns that maybe his life isn't so bad after all.
8. Howard finally finds love in season eight, but at what cost? In the episode "Howard's Main Event", new bakery-girl Millie Hutchins catches Howard's eye. The feeling seem to be mutual. What problem emerges which may stymie their budding romance?

Answer: Millie's jealous ex-boyfriend

Howard tries dodging Millie's ex but finally stands up to him and wins the girl.

Millie's bully of an ex-boyfriend, Clyde Plaunt, is played by Allan Melvin. While Melvin is best known for his role of Sam the Butcher on the "Brady Bunch", he appears on "The Andy Griffith Show" in eight episodes. While in Mayberry, Melvin never plays the same character twice.
9. The relationship between Howard and Millie becomes serious in the aptly titled "Howard and Millie". Howard pops the question and Millie accepts. A train trip to Millie's home town (with Andy and Helen as chaperones) ensues. What happens to spoil the plans?

Answer: Howard and Millie learn they are not compatible

Although this seems like a sad ending, Howard is glad he discovers the truth about Millie. This break from Millie makes the funniest Howard episode possible.
10. In "The Wedding", Howard's shrewish widowed mother abruptly decides to remarry and move out of town. This leaves Howard finally on his own! With the house now all his, what does Howard decide to do with it?

Answer: Turn it into a swingin' '60s bachelor pad and have a party

The party Howard throws is an epic failure. Helen Crump is the only female in attendance. Besides dancing with Andy, Helen is forced to dance with Goober, Howard and Emmet. Where are the fun girls when you need them?

Sadly, this is the last Howard-centric episode of "The Andy Griffith Show". After "The Wedding", there are only five more episodes before the show is cancelled. Happily, the character of Howard Sprague lives on in the spin-off "Mayberry RFD", where more wacky Howard adventures ensue.
