Gomer and Goober: Pyles of Fun on "TAGS" Quiz

Answer: Using an acetylene torch to get Barney out of the vault

Gomer, played by Jim Nabors, shows up in this episode where Barney accidentally gets locked in the bank vault. Barney, thoroughly disgusted with the bank's security measures, tries to convince everyone what a pushover the bank would be for robbers. No one heeds his warning so he decides to dress up like the bank's cleaning woman to try and sneak into the vault but ends up getting locked inside it instead.

This episode is also the first credited appearance of Clint Howard as Leon.

Answer: Whistling "Jimmy Cracked Corn" through his nostrils

This episode called "The Fun Girls" is the only one where Gomer and Goober appeared together. Goober, played by George Lindsey, had another talent in addition to the ones listed above which he demonstrated during this hilarious season four show. He used an invisible needle and thread to sew up his fingers and then pulled on the string to make his arm work like a pulley.

Answer: That Barney thought he had Thelma Lou in his hip pocket

Upon hearing that Barney had said this, Thelma Lou decides to teach ol' Barn a lesson. She cancels their standing Tuesday night watch-TV-at-Thelma-Lou's-house-with-a-pan-of-cashew-fudge date and invites Gomer to the movie playing in town. Gomer is so naive that he doesn't even realize Thelma Lou is using him to make Barney jealous. Barney just happens to see them going into the movie and it causes all kinds of trouble.

In the end, Barney promises never to take Thelma Lou for granted again.

Answer: Lydia Crosswaithe

Lydia must be a real ball-of-fire on a date. We learn that she can't eat pretzels (they lay on her chest), she has a bad back and can't throw a bowling ball (she'd be in traction for a month), she doesn't play any card games (she doesn't gamble), she doesn't like automobile rides (she gets carsick) and eating too much chocolate makes her nauseous. Josie Lloyd portrays Lydia in this delightful episode.

Answer: Mary Grace Gossage

Gomer admits that he's never been on a real date before (unless cousins count) and he is understandably nervous. But the boys convince him that Thel's cousin is really nice and they'll have a good time together. Shortly after arriving at Thelma Lou's house on the night of the big dance, Gomer suddenly stands up and bolts out the front door. Everyone assumes that Gomer has ditched his date and it ruins the evening for Thelma Lou and the two couples don't even go inside when they get to the dance. When everyone arrives back at Thelma Lou's house they find Gomer and Mary Grace dancing up a storm and having a grand old time.

It seems Gomer realized he had not gotten a corsage (he pronounced it 'core-saige') for his date and left in search of one. So all ended well and a good time was had by all!

Answer: Burn a hole in Andy's pants while ironing them

Gomer tries to repay Andy for letting him stay at their house but quickly becomes an annoyance. In addition to the late-night vacuuming, Gomer also chops wood while everyone is trying to sleep. To make matters worse, some of Gomer's regular customers from Wally's filling station keep popping by in the middle of the night with various car problems causing the Taylors (and some of their neighbors) to lose more sleep. Andy finally says enough is enough and convinces Wally to re-hire Gomer. Wally then realizes how much of his business is tied to Gomer and provides him with an icebox and an extra burner for his 'kitchenette'.

Answer: Gilly Walker

The entire town of Mayberry seems to be punch-happy. Aside from the original punch that started the whole affair 19 years ago, the punchers/punchees are as follows: Mr. Foley punches Goober, Otis Campbell punches Floyd, Goober punches Gilly Walker, Opie punches Johnnie Paul, Lamar Tuttle punches Otis, Betty Ann is punched by someone (no one knows for sure since it is revealed over the telephone) and then finally the person responsible for stirring up the whole thing gets punched ...

This is the perfect ending for this very funny episode - Barney Fife himself gets a punch in the nose but it's not clear who does the punching at the barbershop.

Answer: Beasley

Andy introduces him as Goober Beasley, 'our filling station attendant'. This is not the first episode where Goober makes an appearance so whoever was in charge of script continuity must have been on vacation that week. This is not the only instance of conflicting information.

In the first season, Andy and Barney are portrayed as cousins but this is dropped at the beginning of season two. Also, Barney is known to have three different middle initials: M, O and P. The M is for Milton as shown in the Mayberry Cutlass yearbook, O is for Oliver, revealed in the episode "A Plaque for Mayberry" and finally the most referred to middle initial is P but it is never revealed what the P stands for.

Answer: Hooting like an owl

Gomer ruins the surprise by failing to alert everyone that the guests of honor have arrived. While hiding in the bushes in front of the Taylor house, Gomer is busy munching on a sandwich and is unaware that the squad car has pulled up into the driveway.

When he does finally notice, his mouth is so full that he cannot break into his hoot owl imitation until it's too late. This episode called "The Rumor" is but one of many where Barney mistakenly assumes Andy is getting ready to take the big plunge. Gomer chides Barney in the end telling him, "What a dumb trick! Swell party ... but what a dumb trick!"

Answer: Wears the Sergeant's new Dress Blue uniform

This episode, which aired 5/19/64, served as the pilot for "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." and marked the end of Gomer as a regular cast member. It was the last episode to air during the fourth season even though it had been filmed much earlier in the year. In all, Jim Nabors appeared in 23 episodes of the black-and-white seasons and George Lindsey appeared in 14 of the black-and-white episodes.
