Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The FBI determined that Mayberry had the lowest crime rate in all the USA. A large audience gathered at the award ceremony to honor their two brave and dedicated lawmen. During the speech in which FBI Special Agent Jenkins is presenting the award to Mayor Pike, Barney rushes excitedly from behind the curtain onto the stage with fist raised in the air and declares what?

Answer: "We defy the Mafia!"

The episode is called "Crime Free Mayberry" but the award from the FBI was bogus. It was a scam to keep the townsfolk occupied while another crime partner robbed the Mayberry bank. Law and order prevails in the end and the two crooks wind up in Cell #1 at the Mayberry jail.
2. A newcomer in town, Ellie Walker, has decided to run for town council and actually gets enough names on a petition to be on the ballot. One of Barney's first love interests sweet-talks him into signing the petition by calling him among other things "Cream Puff". What was the name of Barney's sweetheart in this episode?

Answer: Hilda May

Hilda May, portrayed by Florence MacMichael, was really Barney's first love interest (Miss Rosemary not withstanding). This episode was called "Ellie for Council" and was only one of 12 episodes with Elinor Donahue.
3. Barney cannot leave well enough alone. He discovers that an incident from Sheriff Poindexter's administration was never officially closed involving an altercation between Floyd and Mr. Foley. How does this episode end?

Answer: Barney gets punched in the nose

Aptly titled "The Case of the Punch in the Nose", it started 19 years earlier when Foley punched Floyd in the nose over the price of a haircut. In this episode half the town seems to be throwing punches. Floyd punches Foley, Foley punches Goober, Goober punches Gilly Walker and even Opie punches his best friend Johnny Paul Jason.

In the end Barney ends up getting a punch in the nose although it is not clear if it was Floyd or Mr. Foley who landed the blow and finally closed the case.
4. Sheriff Taylor sees the opportunity for romance when county nurse Mary Simpson drops by the courthouse unexpectedly. When she and Andy plan to get together that evening Barney horns right in and invites himself and Thelma Lou along. Barney, having no common sense, keeps popping up all through the episode when Mary and Andy are trying to be alone thereby nipping romance in the bud. What does Andy finally say to Mary when Barney and a whole crowd find them parked at the lake?

Answer: "Phantom Fife strikes again"

Barney incorrectly surmises that Andy is popping the question to Mary and gathers a whole bunch of friends and family to surprise the couple. When they go to Mary's house but find no one home Barney leads the whole posse (with picnic in hand) right to where Andy is trying his best to court the pretty nurse.

The part of Mary was played by Sue Ann Langdon. She is the second Mary Simpson that Andy tries to court - the first Mary was portrayed by Julie Adams. This episode is called "Three's a Crowd".
5. Barney recalled a girl from his youth that he used to like named Vicki Harmes. It seems that every time Barney would offer her a bite of his snowcone, she would bite off the end, suck out all the syrup then hand it back to Barney. What flavor snowcone did Barney say was his favorite?

Answer: Raspberry

Old Barn's head was always easily turned by a pretty girl. This episode from season three was called "The Rivals". I say if Barney was dumb enough to keep on offering her a bite even though she sucked all the syrup out then I can't feel too bad for him. According to Deputy Fife, the lovely Miss Harmes thought she was hot stuff because her daddy worked for Civil Service.
6. In one early episode Andy tells town drunk Otis Campbell that his 24 hours are up. Barney tells Andy that he wants to give Otis a sobriety test before releasing him. After watching the deputy give Otis the test, Andy suggests that Barney send that idea into the FBI and even gave it a name. What name did Andy suggest for the sobriety test?

Answer: The Peter Piper Nose Pinchin' Test for Drunks

In this episode from season one, two ladies from the Women's Historical Society come to Mayberry in hopes of finding the descendant of Revolutionary War hero Nathan Tibbs. It turns out to be Otis Campbell and Barney and Mayor Pike are afraid Otis will appear at the ceremony all lit up.

However, all ends well in this episode called "A Plaque for Mayberry." In this show, Andy reveals that Barney's middle name is Oliver. In the Mayberry Cutlass yearbook his middle name is said to be Milton. Most references state his middle initial to be P but I am not sure it was ever revealed what the P stood for.
7. Barney, in addition to believing he has a real talent for singing, also plays several different musical instruments. Which of these did he NOT play?

Answer: Slide trombone

Barney once did a bongo solo during the singing of "Bringing Nellie Home". He also helped to save the town by playing his French Harp while leading Jimmy, the loaded goat, safely out of town. Barney even managed to land a cymbal audition with the Mayberry town band but was told he could be a 'standby' cymbalist. Barney then remarked to Andy, who had conducted the impromptu audition, that the band didn't have a cymbalist. Andy said that was the best kind to standby for.

FYI: French Harp is another name for the harmonica and sometimes is even known as a mouth harp.
8. In an episode called "Prisoner of Love", a beautiful young woman suspected of being a jewel thief is brought to the Mayberry jail to be held overnight. Both the Sheriff and Deputy are enamored with her. When Andy goes home for the evening, Barney unknowingly allows her to escape. What was he occupied with that allowed her to make her get away?

Answer: Fixing the lock on her overnight bag

In his tenure as deputy, Barney probably allowed more prisoners to escape from the Mayberry jail than Colonel Klink did at Stalag 13! In this wonderful episode from season four, Susan Oliver guest stars as the jewel thief.
9. Barney's cousin Virgil comes to Mayberry to visit for a few days. It turns out that Virge is not the sharpest tack in the drawer and proves to be rather reckless and clumsy. He inadvertently ruins the keys to the cell door by cleaning them too well. Otis is locked in that cell and needs to get out soon for a job interview. What does Barney do to get Otis out of the cell?

Answer: Ties a rope to the squad car and pulls out the back wall

In this episode appropriately called "Cousin Virgil", Otis does make it to his appointment on time but no thanks to Barney. Virgil redeems himself by figuring out that the cell door can be removed by tapping out the pins on the hinge. Michael Pollard guest stars as Virgil.
10. Barney bumps into a couple of wild women from Mount Pilot while out getting dinner for him and Andy since they are having to work late. Helen and Thelma Lou accidentally see the boys with the two 'fun girls' and all kinds of trouble ensues. One of the fun girls, Skippy, keeps calling Barney by the wrong name. What name did she keep calling him?

Answer: Bernie

The two girls, Skippy and Daphne, end up with Gomer and Goober at the town dance and all ends well with Thelma Lou and Helen. This season four episode was called .... you guessed it .... "The Fun Girls" and is especially worth watching if for no other reason than to see Goober's impersonation of Edward G. Robinson.

It is also the only show that featured both Gomer and his cousin Goober.
11. Opie's pal Trey Bowden receives a letter from the Miracle Salve Company. It states he has been blacklisted because he (Trey) was unable to sell their product & returned it. Barney, as usual, overreacts to this letter of 'intimidation' and recruits Gomer to accompany him to Mount Pilot to try and outfox the owners of the salve company. Gomer pretends to be Opie Taylor Sr. and Barney plays the part of a Mayberry veterinarian named who?

Answer: Dr. Pendyke

In this funny episode entitled "A Deal is a Deal", Barney and Gomer go to the Miracle Salve Co. in Mount Pilot and tell the owners that their product miraculously cures the mange and they would like to buy all they have in stock. As Barney expected the salve company comes to Mayberry and collects all the unsold salve the boys have. What Barney didn't count on was that all the salve was delivered to the home of Opie Taylor Sr. and payable in seven days.

In the end both Gomer and Barney end up hitting the street to try and get rid of 946 jars of the worthless salve.
12. In the season five episode "Goober and the Art of Love," where does Barney take Goober to try and show him how to act on a date?

Answer: Helen Crump's front porch while Andy is there on a date

Andy and Barney figure if Goober gets himself a girl he'll be less likely to tag along when they go on their dates. The plan backfires and instead of just Goober hanging around, Goober's new girlfriend Lydia Crosswaithe also tags along. Josie Lloyd guest stars as Lydia.
13. While looking through an old Mayberry Union High yearbook, Andy and Barney come up with the idea to have a 20-year high school reunion. Barney begins to fret because he learns a girl who was really sweet on him is coming to the reunion and is now married. Barney is concerned that the romance will pick up where it left off and he'll be the reason a marriage breaks up. What was the name of the girl that Barney was fretting over?

Answer: Ramona Wiley

It must have been a serious fling because Ramona once wrote Barney a note that said, "The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain that is in my heart!". As it turns out, Ramona didn't even remember who Barney was even after he reminded her of the nickname she used to call him -- Tweekie.

This episode from season three was called "Class Reunion" and features the Mayberry Union High fight song.
14. When a record producer, Mr. Maxwell, comes to Mayberry and finds considerable music talent, he decides to record some of the local musicians in hopes of putting together an album. Everyone is excited by the prospects of a hit record and several of the boys, including Barney, talk the producer into selling shares of stock in the venture. Andy believes that Maxwell is a con artist and chides all those who bought into the hype. Maxwell does leave town suddenly and Sheriff Taylor is convinced he has taken the money and skipped town. What does Barney say when he learns that Mr. Maxwell has checked out of his hotel room?

Answer: "Another buffalo pointing the wrong way ...."

This story is called "Mayberry on Record" and is from season one. The buffalo reference comes from Andy trying to show Barn how gullible he was by offering to sell him a rare buffalo nickel. The nickel supposedly was rare because it had been cast with the buffalo facing the wrong way.

It was just a regular buffalo head nickel but Andy had Barney convinced it was worth $75. As it turned out, Mr. Maxwell was not a crook and managed to sell the tape to a large record company.
15. Opie is less than thrilled by his new teacher, Old Lady Crump, because she gives too much history homework. While discussing this at the breakfast table, Barney comments that history was his best subject in school but Andy doesn't seem to recall that about Barney. What historical event did Andy ask him to explain in order to prove that he knew his American history?

Answer: The Emancipation Proclamation

As it turned out, history wasn't exactly Barney's best subject as he never did explain about The Emancipation Proclamation. This episode was called "Andy Discovers America" and was the debut of Aneta Corsaut as Helen Crump.
