We find out in the pilot episode that Cathy has Stage IV Melanoma, but hasn't, and isn't planning on telling anyone anytime soon. She doesn't want to be treated differently.

Answer: She wants to be able to do the banana split and dive off her porch. Some of her happiest memories are summers in the pool with her brother.

Cathy fondly reminisces to her handsome oncologist that although her family didn't have much money growing up, they had a pool, where she and her brother would spend summers making up dives. Despite paying the contractor a double rate, Cathy's plan is thwarted by Marlene's interference when she is required to file the proper permits.

Answer: No specific reason- Paul's childishness has become a fundamental problem for Cathy.

Later on in season 1, both Cathy and Paul end up cheating on each other, (Cathy with Lenny, and Paul with the 'rugby lady') but in the beginning of the season, it is merely Cathy's discontent with Paul's immature behavior that lands him on his sister's couch. He is back in the house by the end of the season.

Thomas was able to smell the cancer in Marlene's late husband too. Marlene explains this to Cathy after Thomas follows her home again, and we learn Marlene isn't as tough as she appears.

In the season finale, and one of the more moving moments of the series, Adam discovers the storage locker. He breaks down and cries upon seeing all of the cards and gifts laid out for future celebrations that will happen without his mother.

Dr. Mauer (Todd) kisses Cathy after he cuts in on a dance between her and the "bee man". He apologizes many times over, but admits that he has struggled with his feelings for her. Cathy tells him that he should pick the "girl that lives".

This hysterical scene allows Cathy to take an unknowing Adam back home to spend the summer in her company. Unfortunately, it also reinforces the feeling in Adam that his mother has lost her mind.
