Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What noticeable difference has occurred in Luke's diner?

Answer: There are new menus

Lane, Rory, and Lorelai were all eating at Luke's when they noticed the new menus. There were new, plastic covers (so that Lorelai would be discouraged from doodling), and three new salads. The salads were for Nicole, as she didn't have much that she could order from when she ate there.

In addition, another item was taken off of the menu! That scene concluded the amount of time Luke was on screen.
2. What test did the teacher near the beginning of this episode mention had already taken place?

Answer: The SATs

The SATs (Scholastic Aptitude Tests) had already taken place, but the teacher was pleased to see that almost everyone ("almost" being the operative word here) hadn't started slacking off.
3. In this episode, viewers find out that Sookie is pregnant! Immediately before this realization, however, Sookie is outraged when some guests dislike their food. What was one of the complaints?

Answer: Too sewery

Lorelai tried the food, and agreed with the "sewery" statement. The other two complaints were that it was too salty, and too hot. Sookie's food is always amazing, so Lorelai concludes that Sookie must be sick. However, as Rory said, Sookie never gets sick.

When Lorelai ponders about that fact for a minute, she realizes that Sookie must be pregnant! Sookie realizes it at the same time, and they run to each other and hug.
4. There is a speech contest at Chilton, which happens to be a major part of this episode. When the winners were picked, they would read their speech aloud. When would the reading take place?

Answer: Friday night

When the teacher first announces the contest, she mentions that most of the students were probably thinking about the fact that they had "better things to do on a Friday night". Then, when she is at the school to hear Rory and Paris speak, Lorelai mentions that "the amount of people" who have nothing to do on a Friday night amazes her.
5. Kirk appears in this episode. What was his occupation this time?

Answer: Mail carrier

With mail all scattered over the floor of Doose's Market, Kirk is trying to get everyone to stay away from the mail. They all want their own letters, but Kirk is very unorganized. He says that they could do his job if they wanted to, but first they'd have to pass a test.
6. Doose's Market is out of allergy medication, so Lorelai decides to just pick it up on her way to her parents'. Who does she bump into at the drug store in Hartford?

Answer: Max Medina

Max Medina was Rory's Liturature teacher at Chilton, and he also was engaged to Lorelai for a period of time. However, Lorelai backed out of their engagement at the last moment.
7. Rory and Paris both had written remarkable speeches, and since Headmaster Charleston didn't want to have to choose one girl's speech over the other, he decided to let the two of them both "merge" their speeches together into one. What was the initial plan of how Rory and Paris would do this?

Answer: Over the phone

Paris had originally planned on she and Rory combining their speeches over the telephone, but Paris ended up coming over to Rory's house. When Rory asked why Paris was there, Paris initially told Rory that their initial plan was stupid, and wouldn't work at all. Soon after, Paris revealed her actual reason for coming over: to talk about how Paris had sex.
8. The first mention of Paris having sex with Jamie is in this episode.

Answer: True

Paris used a number of euphemisms when telling this fact to Rory, along with the actual blunt words. Paris asked, "Rory?" "What, Paris?" Rory responded. "I slept with Jamie. Last night. After we talked." Later on, Paris says, "I went over there to study and he lit a fire and then we did it. What are your thoughts on that?" So, when Rory has finally had a moment to digest this fact, and Lorelai walks into the house and starts to overhear them talking, Rory says, "So you're saying that you and Jamie..." Paris finishes with "...had sex."
9. Paris shows up late and unkempt when she and Rory are supposed to give their speech. The main reason for this is that Paris didn't get into Harvard. What did Paris say she got?

Answer: The tiny envelope

This, ultimately, is where the title of this episode, "The Big One", came from. Paris got a tiny envelope, but Rory got "the big one". In fact, Rory got a bunch of "big ones". She was accepted into every school she applied to, apparently. Poor Paris!
10. Near the end of this episode, Max tells Lorelai that he, apparently, is not over Lorelai. What did they do that proved this fact to him?

Answer: Kissed

Lorelai and Max kissed each other! One didn't kiss the other, but it was a rather mutual kiss. This is one of those situations of physical attraction that always, undoubtedly, causes problems.
